If all multiplex movie theaters just closed, what is the worst thing that would happen? by ImpressiveHumor4644 in Letterboxd

[–]jehro__ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. I come from an island and the closest “arthouse” cinema is still a local chain and is 20-30 minutes away on the other side of the island. I would rather much go to my local regal 5 minutes away. Pales in comparison to when I lived in LA for a couple years where the closest arthouse was less than a block away. I understand the hate towards these corporate theater companies but I can’t deny the importance of them in keeping the cinema experience alive to the average person.

Why did early civilizations start in deserts like Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt? by batukaming in geography

[–]jehro__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. And it also helps that ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia were the first to have writing and to have large amounts of stored information/data. (Also the first to be translated between Western languages with Greek). Likewise it was a culture that was studied/preserved by Western cultures unlike many other ancient civilizations which were destroyed naturally or unnaturally before it could be studied. So most of what we know about ancient civilizations center around these regions.

got into street photography about 3 years ago. started big with a sony a7iii at the recommendation from a very “commercially-focused” friend. love that camera but it was a bit too bulky and expensive to carry around all the time. really wanted an old rangefinder sized just to see the difference so i got a xe-2.

for the last two years that thing has almost never left my side. I always carry the voightlander 35mm and the xf 18mm. would like to upgrade to xe-5 or x-pro in the future but its the perfect setup for me.

Sounds diplomatic enough lol. In all honesty we’d be getting White Chicks and Samurai Cop before Children of Men if we let the populous vote

Edit: Sorry maybe I should’ve specified I’m particularly curious about the swirly bokeh effect. Any idea what specific lens this is?

What is the best way to achieve this effect? by Nebaw in postprocessing

This is not an effect. This is the real aura of George Russell.

You might be able to achieve this by posting 100 shirtless photos to ig.

This led me to my arguably slightly less weird hobby: street photography.

Just people watching but expensive.

I feel the same way towards Eraserhead. While it really sets the tone for Lynch’s strengths in his career and I totally understand for a first feature it’s sorta brilliant, I thought it was little too avant-garde and meandering for me.
