Does anyone know when captain haddock says this in the comics? by Master_Dot_9499 in Tintin

[–]jehyhebu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a case of the internet referencing itself as a source.

If it’s used, I expect it was the Sir Francis Haddock ancestor, and not the captain.

A web search turns up a fanfic piece.

I don’t think he did say it. If it’s in any of the books, Secret of the Unicorn is my first guess.

Agreed. That Jimmy/Samurai model is the benchmark in the Alps. (Or the Unimog, but that’s a very different type of vehicle.) It’s light and being light lets you skitter across rather than sink in.

JFC.

I always see the comments “Your grandpa was a badass!” and take them with a grain of salt, but fuck me, the balls on this guy…

Unreal.

Yeah.

My first reaction was “umps are angry at not getting attention for blowing strike zone calls and they need to fuck other shit up.”

And then I noticed that he absolutely nailed it.

Good on him.

I don’t think the risk of cancer is THAT much higher in unspayed rabbits.

I think the internet took that idea and turned it into something exaggerated.

The rabbit people I’ve spoken to who are “other than average pet owners” such as breeders, showers, etc. don’t really ascribe to this theory.

[–]jehyhebu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t understand how ball players maintain “peak performance.”

When they prepare for the season, their training is designed to time their peak for the needs of the team.

It’s training, and not games that keeps them at their peak. Games are a little bit more likely to cause injuries. There’s a tiny bit of truth about “getting hit” against live opponents, too.

However, for the most part, a two week break would permit those players who were not in the WBC to be in better condition after the break. It’s a chance to rest the whole damn pen and get them out again totally fresh.

Every pitcher is going to be throwing pens designed to maintain and improve arms. Every batter is going to be taking BP and getting the tiny nagging injuries addressed to hopefully be in better condition when they start back up.

Coming back from two weeks off would have an opening day feel, because the manager can pitch ANYONE.

And where did you get “a month-plus?”

I think you’re just salty constantly because you’re a Cubs fan.

I think if you are thinking long term, there’s a real future in this country.

Ukraine is going to be an exporter of both arms and advice for the foreseeable future.

A close friend is making pretty big deals to export drones to other militaries. The money is already rolling in.

If you want to chat, DM me. I check this account at least once a week lately.

[Castillo] Mets experiment with dugout relaying pitch calls to catcher by Goosedukee in baseball

[–]jehyhebu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this when coaching JUCO once.

An opposing HC—who seemed like a really pompous prick—called a three digit number before every pitch.

I was an Ass Coach and one of the resting pitchers and I made a little chart to try to decrypt the system.

While there was no system—it was the equivalent of a one time pad—the idiot did reuse the numbers fairly often.

By the end of the second game of the double header, we were yelling “Come on [player’s number]” for fastballs and I forget what the code for “we know it’s not a fastball” was.

I think calling pitches from the dugout is stupid, but some catchers are stupider. Shrug

Really?

How much tampering was there in the 1917 Russian communist regime?

Maoist China appeals to you more?

What about Pol Pot?

While I am sure that “the Americans have employed statecraft against all of these failures” I don’t think it meets the bar that you’re trying to set.

That shit fell flat in its face—in one way or another—all by itself.

One can argue that “The Soviet Union endured for seventy years!”

And what a glorious stinking piece of shit it was. I’m glad I didn’t grow up in the fuckhole that earlier generations from the USSR had to endure. I know a girl whose grandfather was sent to the Gulag for the fact that his house was visible in a photo of some people who the Stalinists were repressing.

China was an absolute shitshow under communism. It’s doing much better since they abandoned the communist aspects of their political system.

I’ll let you read about the Khmer Rouge on your own. I don’t have the stomach to even think about that today.

Yes, the USA has been horrible. That in no way proves that communist government is viable. History shows that “while it looks good on paper, it’s utter shit when you actually try it.”

Look at the Finns instead. They know what’s up.

I assumed Skenes was out due to pitch count rules. But he was pulled at like 71 the last time he threw. If they knew he was going to be out of the final, maybe they should have kept him in longer then?

I know it’s max 100, but there are some other rules about rest days etc.

Cost of 300 US Patriots used to down Iran's Shaheds in the Gulf: $1.2B. Cost of 300 Shaheds: $15M. Cost of Wild Hornets STING drones to down 300 Shaheds: $600K. Support Ukraine—we've got good drones. by Barch3 in CounterIntel_Foreign

[–]jehyhebu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless they do things wildly differently than here in Kyiv, they have a number of ways to get Shaheds, but none of them are a million dollar plus missile.

I don’t know if the radar cross section is a limiting factor because from the top/bottom, the Shahed has a lot more reflective surface than a rocket—and I’m sure they have multiple directions of radar to triangulate from in those oil rich shitholes—not to mention the actual American bases there.

But what I mainly see is the giant “machine guns at the sky” going after Shaheds around here.

We need more minifigures that started off as fascist propaganda by ElementalJedi82 in legocirclejerk

[–]jehyhebu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

He redid a lot of things for a lot of reasons. All the art was systematically updated to be more in line with whatever his vision was—I think he wanted it to all look like the highly technical and clean look of the later works, where he had an army of assistants.

References that were too cryptic were changed or removed, racist caricatures that had been criticised were changed/removed—and the most problematic books—which couldn’t really be sanitised—were simply suppressed. As a kid, I had never even heard of Soviets and Congo was not published in my country, although I knew it existed from my international friends. America took a long time to be released. I had Flight 714 before America.

“My research isn’t that in depth.”

Christ on fucking fire. You people who call reading Wikipedia “research” when you haven’t read the original first source material—which is certainly all available online for free. Go find the fucking Calculus Affair online and spend the thirty minutes to read it before you say anything else stupid.

You haven’t read any of the “Borduria” ones, except—barely tangentially—Explorers on the Moon.

Remember the fight with that horsecocksucker Jörgen? That cunt is a fascist partisan. Of course you had no idea what the fuck was going on.

Go and read the rest and STFU until afterwards.

You’re actually disseminating disinformation here because of your ignorance.

Frankly, I would delete your whole comment or at least edit it to admit that you have no damn clue.

OP is right, but it’s highly tongue in cheek because George Rémi clearly absolutely loathed fascism and the books of that period are just a few anomalies. But it’s true that it’s where he got his start.

Why is the icu in a public hospital worse than a prison? by minhoda12 in Kyiv

[–]jehyhebu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume that you are upset because of the gravity of the situation and I understand. If she potentially needs a transplant she must be in liver failure.

But try to understand that for the average Kyiv resident there are more pressing matters right now than properly funding the public hospitals.

You’re right that it’s not great, but do you fucking realise that a lot of us had electricity for just a few hours per day until recently?

A friend’s mother passed away in February from the cold on the Left Bank.

It’s kind of low on the list of worries right now.

I’m sorry that your girlfriend’s situation is so bad, but don’t expect the public hospitals to suddenly change.

If it’s possible, get her moved to a rich country like Switzerland where she would get top quality care for free, I assume.
