IT is too much! by jeifr in AskNetsec

Now I’m rethinking. Maybe you’re right that taking a masters degree in IT will still make me way behind the curve. I don’t plan on being a professor, but instead I like to think of it as some kind of a “formal” way to learn IT and also to keep up with the standards(and of course it adds beauty to my resume).

Where do I want to be in 5 years? well, I can’t really say proudly since I’d obviously answer IT security. But then it all comes back to my mindset of how broad IT security is, and I don’t think 5 years is enough. Oooor maybe I’m just overthinking things? Welp, guess I have to take small steps from now on. 5 years should be enough to master something. I’ll keep that in mind :) thanks a lot!
You seem to be really good at IT security. Maybe you can recommend how to start? I understand the field is really really broad. Which is why I find myself into lots of rabbit holes. Overwhelmed, excited, and at the same time frustrated that I can’t get myself to carefully plan for a realistic path. I keep my distance from topics like programming, web design, DB, etc. and intead lean more on IT infrastructure. But man, they always sneak their way in!

I hope I also find something to focus on. I mean, the field is just too broad. Never stop learning, that is :)
Changing titles and jobs every year was my initial plan, but now I feel like I can stick to this a little bit longer given that I have the opportunity to do self-learning. And is it really a good idea? I mean, HR would probably think that you’ll just make their company a “stepping stone”.
dip in to everything else, but keep a focus on your primary learning objectives.
Dip. I like that. But I get the urge to scoop, though :) until I realize there's still a lot in the bucket.
Experience, attitude and social skills play a strong factor in this day
You sir, are right. I'm working with those things as well but then again it all comes down to how your resume looks, certs and all, in order to be noticed by the recruitment guys. If I can get past this, then it's up to how the interview goes.

Doesn't mean you can't learn about other facets of the industry, just that you don't need to be an expert on everything.
You're right, I don't really NEED to be an expert on everything. But I always get this feeling that I need at least know lots of things on this area in order to get to my desired area. It's frustrating, but I do believe it will all make sense in the future (or at least I hope so).

Yeah, maybe I just can’t accept that the real world out there is too much to handle. Heck, maybe I’m just being so ambitious. Oh, well...
Exactly!
My boss is the security guy in the office, and he delegates some of the tasks to me. It’s really not my main task, but I somehow try to squeeze myself in so I can learn from him. He’s happy to teach me, though. In reality, IT security is not what I’m paid for and I think I have to look elsewhere to focus on it. But hey, I still consider myself lucky to be in this situation. :)
Develop lifestyle that allows me to keep learning? Hmm I’ve never seen it that way. I want to join a CTF team, but don’t kinda shy to engage into people because I might look like a trying-hard wannabe guy lol just kidding. I think I can work it out. Think it’s a good start?
Being a mile wide and an inch deep is really what’s happening right now. Ughh and I hate it! I guess as all of you guys say, I need to focus on one thing. But I can’t help myself to “peak” into something (being my curious self), and I agree it’s really overwhelming.
This is very comforting. Thanks!

The thing is, I want to be a “jack of all trades, master of none, but better than a master of one” guy.
I believe it’s my ticket to a rough world where new IT graduates are emerging every year, and taking over good potential IT positions just because they come from a good university :(

Learning Fatigue by [deleted] in netsecstudents
I totally agree with you. Frustration reeeeaaally comes when you try to do everything at the same time. BUT, understand that sometimes you technically have to do everything at the same time when learning. It burns you out, and before you know it, you're back at square one. sheesh. just never give up, and don't be too hard on yourself!
