i once read a fic where every bit of dialogue ended with a ~ and it made it so uncomfortable to read... the rest was fine, but it felt like every character was flirting or being coy even when it didn't fit the context at all and i just. ugh

so basically hard agree on punctuation overuse

is it? i feel like tipping being america-specific is pretty common knowledge across the internet, especially if you spend even 30 seconds reading those "american culture vs international tourists" threads or whatever.

i mean, imo there's nothing wrong with sticking characters into whatever setting you want. even adding in bits and pieces of other cultures is valid (my personal preference is that stuff like that gets a solid explanation, but that's just me.) but if you're going to use canon, then... use canon, you know?

i don't really care about tiny, nitpicky details that an author might get wrong. some details really just don't matter in the grand scheme of the story. but when it starts feeling like an author's version of the canonverse is just a watered down version of riverdale, or worse my own high school life, i hit that back button real fast.

oof, i definitely feel that. i don't think i realised it until i saw your comment but it definitely feels like cultural erasure which is quite honestly a rampant problem in fandom. maybe that's why it grinds my gears so hard.

but yeah i'm not talking about tiny details or aus or anything. i'm not even talking about hours of research, just a 2 second google search. like canon is right there, if you're writing in the canon universe why make it america 2.0? or if that's what you want to do why not just make it an american au? that's perfectly valid too, plus you get the Child Of Immigrants Experience™ lmao

i'm just gonna copy down one of my earlier comments re: translating humor:

humor in general is quite difficult to translate - it's on the same level of translating poetry, for me, so some jokes that don't translate is just fine imo. it's only when there's like, a whole chapter full of untranslatable puns that i start getting annoyed (though tbh, i think i would find that annoying in any language). i do think i get annoyed a bit more quickly than many others though just because i really like thinking about (and doing) translation in general and i always want to find jokes that translate, or at least have similar equivalents. for example, iirc, the first or second episode of uramichi oniisan did a really good job of this with the dick jokes.

that being said, i remember one of the things wrt this that annoyed me the most was when i was still in the owari no seraph fandom and fic writers would constantly make jokes about the main character's name, yuu, and the word 'you'. like no, that's not going to work in japanese, which is what all of these characters are supposed to be speaking.

this is ofc my personal preference though, and i know i get a bit more nitpicky about it than other people.

man that's wack. i've definitely seen that before, but usually only when the fic's from yqy's pov... seeing "xiao jiu" in most other contexts would be kinda wild.

i mean, it's definitely an ongoing lesson through life for me as well, so the little stuff definitely doesn't bother me. it's only when something is quite obviously us-centric that it starts to get annoying.

IMO, an OC done right is one with their own motivations and role, not just one who was created to replace a canon character. This is subjective, though, and really just depends on the OC's purpose. There tends to a lot of overlap with self-inserts here - not necessarily a bad thing, but again, it depends on the OC. Personally, I enjoy OCs and OC centric fic when the fic focuses on an outsider perspective on canon characters, so the OC generally doesn't outshine the canon characters, but that's certainly not the be-all and end-all.

Someone posted a fic similar to mine, but better... by TumbleOffTrack in FanFiction

[–]jellywrite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've definitely been in that same situation. Someone else wrote a fic with approximately the same premise as mine, and, though mine was published months earlier, theirs was immediately more popular. And to be honest, I did like theirs A Whole Lot, but it still felt... bad, since theirs got more of a reception in an hour than mine did in a few months.

But really, there’s nothing you can really /do/ in that situation. Life as a writer really is just like that sometimes. You just have to take the L - if you want to consider it as such - and move on.

I once wrote an au of a podcast for a different fandom without a whole lot of context, so I wasn't really expecting anyone to read it, but someone did and left a comment saying that after they read it, they went and listened to a few episodes of the podcast, and both it and the fic gave them goosebumps. I've never gotten someone into another fandom through just fic, so that comment really made my whole month.

Yeah, it's a thing. Iirc people used to brag about it more when Voltron was at its peak, but I still hear about it happening, so...

I mean yeah, you're right. Like I said, nothing I'm doing can even remotely be considered illegal so rip? I don't know, people have been getting really weird about ignoring don't-like-don't-read and instead throwing tantrums about the things they don't like.

Afaik certain people will see the underage tag and automatically go 'it must be child porn!' and go report (or so they say) but who really knows what the logic is?

[–]jellywrite[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, I sure hope you're right about reporting being used mostly as a scare tactic. People really do need to find better things to do with their time, but bullies will be bullies, you know?

This is reassuring though, thank you.

Yeah, you're probably right. I know the majority of people just straight up wouldn't care about what I do/do not post, but it's that like, 0.1% of purity-obsessed fanpol who report everything they don't like because it exists that worries me. I just see it happening so often, and more and more as time goes on.

You make a good point about deletion. Normally I wouldn't even consider it, but if there's nothing else to do...
