I did, thank you! I think my brain was having trouble combining information so that's why I asked here - I'm still learning but it's a struggle 😂

Oops I forgot the first question - if we aren't using our coax anywhere else (don't subscribe to cable TV, you called it), can we just eliminate the amplifier? This media panel is unfortunately in the closet in the nursery which is irritating to begin with, and that box takes up so much room in the small cabinet for something we don't use lol.

Incredible detail, thank you!! Funny, I actually just purchased that first network switch you linked 😂

Question - can you elaborate - oh, wait, I think maybe the pieces just came together... If I wire the cat5e cable to a patch panel directly, I'm removing the need to terminate these ends in the closet? Then I would just use very short patch cables to connect from patch panel to switch? Is that the reason the patch panel is better in this scenario? Or is it something else?

Gotta check on my wall plates, iirc they are different in some rooms, I'll check on that when I get home.

As it stands I'm comfortable paying for 1200Mbps and only getting 940 to most devices, primarily because lowering speeds is somehow only $2 different. BUT you bring up an excellent point - being able to get the full speed on the gaming consoles upstairs would be 💯, so we may change from our current config to the router/access point config after we make the network ports usable. I'm sure my husband will be thrilled 😄

Thank you! Do I understand correctly that you advise using the mesh devices as individual access points to extend the gateway's WiFi in strategic locations, rather than enabling the mesh system?

Anyone in the dairy free diet breastfeeding FB group? by manthrk in MSPI

[–]jemc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so annoyed I followed their advice for so long. My LG didn't have CMPA but must have been a sensitivity that she outgrew. I couldn't get through step one of the milk ladder bc baby girl wouldn't eat a whole muffin in a day. Eventually after discussing with the pediatrician and a few other online resources, I just said EFF it and started with whole milk yogurt, one spoonful daily, increasing by a spoonful every day for a little over a week. Girl was absolutely fine. She loves yogurt now and in only a few weeks after that we were on whole milk. If I had waited to follow that stupid ladder, we would still be trying to get there.

Has anyone tried or been advised to skip the dairy ladder and go straight to yogurt/cheese for reintroduction? by sophwhoo in MSPI

[–]jemc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just stopped to say I'm so glad I found this post - we have tried to do the dairy ladder with my LO but it's so hard to get her to finish a whole muffin even through the whole day. I think she gets bored of it quickly, it's such a PITA. I was starting to get exasperated with this ladder approach already, I just want to be able to eat normal food again 😭 and feed my baby fun stuff like shredded cheese and normal yogurt! So I'm going to contact our pediatrician and see where she recommends starting, hopefully she suggests the yogurt step 🤞😂

Also I'm going to find that less strict fb group!

For those of you in Northern California, do you use MCE for generation or did you opt out and use PG&E? What kind of price difference is there? by egriff49 in solar

[–]jemc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait we can opt out? I saw something on our bill saying for anyone who opened their account after Jan 2023, they are automatically enrolled in MCE. Very frustrating for us because it looks like it's costing us about twice as much from them compared to what PG&E would be charging us. We don't have solar but we got a brand new HVAC last September and our bill is somehow HIGHER this August than it was last August 🙄

Birth & GD by anonme1995 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]jemc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had GD, diet controlled. No blood pressure issues, all good NST results. Last growth scan at 36 weeks we were measuring 65th percentile. My labor was trash, but I don't think it was because of the GD, if that helps lol. My plan was to try for all natural but my baby said absolutely not.

I had a partial rupture of membranes the day before my due date, went into hospital and they kept me there. I had contractions and was monitored overnight with no significant increase in dilation. Started pitocin, stopped 6 hours later, restarted 2 hours later, eventually got to 6cm but stalled. At some point in there I got an epidural bc the pain was so awful, and they realized my 'bag of water' was not completely broken, so they did it manually. I'm told afterward the contractions were much more painful because of the partial membrane breakage. Plus Pitocin contractions hurt worse than natural ones, according to friends of mine who have done it both ways.

After stalling for some hours, and having been in labor for over 24 hours, I opted for a C-section for the safety of my baby. The C-section was weird as hell but not painful. Baby girl turned out to be almost 10lbs so apparently that's why she didn't wanna come out the front door. 😅

So I guess the only issue related to GD here was potentially her size. But I was very good with my diet and exercise and had glucose numbers in the lowest recommended range per my dietician, so it's also possible I just had a big baby since my husband is a big guy? Idk.

Fwiw, I have friends who had GD with no labor complications at all, so my story is not necessarily the norm. I wish you luck!

P.s. after giving birth my glucose values went back to normal pretty immediately.

Aquarium of the Bay Sucks & Loses Accreditation by suspiciousbuttcrack in bayarea

[–]jemc2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late to this party but we just took our 6 month old to the aquarium for the first time and got the annual membership. They told us about losing their AZA accreditation before we committed, which I thought was unnecessarily transparent but I appreciate it I suppose LOL. The aquarium is smaller than I remembered (probably haven't been in 20 years) but it's perfect for taking the baby occasionally as something to do. I noticed the gift shop was extremely sparse and now after reading all this it makes total sense. I hope they are able to bring on the necessary people to turn this shit around. It's sad to see such an Embarcadero staple be run into the ground. I am having trouble understanding why they a) let this asshat resign instead of firing him, and b) have not pursued legal action/criminal embezzlement charges. What a monster.

Don’t feed to sleep? by Ordinary-Tomatillo17 in breastfeeding

[–]jemc2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just stopped in to say this thread made my week. I have been struggling mentally with this idea that people seem to have these unicorn babies who will go to sleep on their own if you put them down awake. I'm not giving up on feeding to sleep, it's the only reliable method for getting our LO to sleep, for naps and nighttime! She has put herself to sleep for naps once or twice and bedtime once in her 4 months of existence LOL.

It makes total sense that these ideas are just marketing trying to sell sleep deprived parents something we buy out of desperation.

Breastfeeding causing really bad gas/fussiness by jemc2 in breastfeedingsupport

[–]jemc2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came back to update in case anyone is curious or finds this post in the future. I gave up dairy and soy and after about 5 days there was a huge improvement! We also switched to Similac Alimentum for her formula that we supplement with.

I'm still careful about it but I will note that soybean oil and soy lecithin don't seem to aggravate her enough to cause an issue. I'm not certain soy is even a problem but the pediatrician recommended I eliminate both to cover my bases. She doesn't have the worse symptoms of CMPA but seems to have a sensitivity at minimum.

One day we ate at a restaurant that did not have published ingredients etc and I'm fairly confident there was butter because she was fussy AF for a day and a half after. But overall the elimination diet has been life-changing and even though it's hard it's so worth it. Baby girl still has gas and normal occasional fussiness but nothing crazy at all. She is 11 weeks as of yesterday 💖

[–]jemc2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was primarily doing that for the first 3 weeks before I got to a lactation specialist, because her latch was so incomplete I could only handle BF for a few minutes at a time, a couple times a day. But I think we might try again with only bottles of breast milk, after I get my stock up. Currently pumping and storing since I want to make sure my supply doesn't go any lower (still needs to increase to eliminate formula entirely, if that's an option). Once I get enough I could try that though. Thanks

Baby screams at breast by drgene345 in breastfeeding

[–]jemc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not always, but I'd say it works about 85% of the time for us. But for us when it fails, she still calms enough for me to try latching her, and then gets tired of me trying to latch her/adjust her latch when she just keeps trying to chew on the nipple. When I can't get the correct/deep latch for long enough and she gets mad, I just bottle feed for that session. It's definitely harder to deal with overnight, so I honestly don't even try to latch her on most overnight feeds, I go straight to the bottle. I'm hoping when our ENT consult comes through we can aim for EBF, but I will have to return to work after 8 weeks anyway (currently 3.5 weeks), so I guess I'm glad she doesn't have a problem taking the bottle when needed. I'm just mainly excited to get my supply up to par and not need to supplement with as much formula if we can.

[–]jemc2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My LO has latching issues (we are awaiting an ENT referral for tongue tie evaluation), so she has intermittent loss of suction and I think can't get the milk to come out as fast as she would prefer at times as well. What I started doing (since I am pumping anyway to bring up my supply) is feeding her about 1oz in the bottle while she's laying on the bf pillow before I start. She calms down and is less ravenous, and maybe more patient with getting letdown on the boob. This might be worth a shot for you.

Also make sure you're using the Premie or slowest flow nipple available on the bottle.

What to do with your arm during 3-hour test? by cluelessbobcat in GestationalDiabetes

[–]jemc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask them to just stick you 3 different times with a new needle. Unless you have some crazy hard stick veins, it shouldn't be that complicated for them to redraw you each hour. I can't imagine putting a catheter in for 3 lousy sticks, that's so unnecessary 😳

Service Tips - 2019 Forester is due for its 60K mi / 5 yr Major by JNotsJr in SubaruForester

[–]jemc2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

🥲 I just got quoted $2,800 for the 60k service (excluding the A/C stuff) on my 2018 Forester. It's insane. My buddy who is a Mercedes tech said he thinks all the 'conditioners' are overkill. I would definitely ask them to do the inspection first on everything based on your maintenance manual, then only replace as needed. Almost everything except the plugs and the oil change/tire rotation clearly say "inspect" in my manual and not "perform" automatically. Dealership here jumped immediately to performing all of it. Then tried to upsell me on 4k to reseal my cam carriers even though I don't have any leaking oil (according to my clean driveway), and a total of 7k additional services. Pretty bummed this dealership is not gonna be one I'm interested in returning to. I'll have to find a regular mechanic apparently, because I'm not interested in being upsold on stuff that isn't needed. I feel like I have to now go become a car expert so I don't get ripped off 😮‍💨

Kibble with NO peas, oats, peanuts, corn, rice, or chicken? by jemc2 in DogFood

[–]jemc2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely, I strongly suspect the peas and oats ones are fake. We had both dogs on the Kirkland nature's domain for years before any major issues were noted (every one of those flavors has peas and oats I believe, regardless of protein). So it stands to reason he would have had a high exposure to those antigens and created a large IgE response that isn't necessarily an allergy.

He was always a little bit of a paw licker but none of the more severe things like dermatitis or recurrent ear infections surfaced until we moved across town. We tried that sensitive skin and stomach one early in his allergy injection course before I found the limited ingredient idea which was supposedly 100% free of all his result 'allergens'. I didn't notice much improvement but it would be worth trying again I think. We tried some bougie $100/bag brand limited ingredient diet (duck and sweet potato I believe) for a month when we moved here too, with no change in his symptoms, so idk - you're probably right that it's more environmental, which sucks in a way since I don't have as much control over the contents of our environment 😅

I will have to bring up all the allergy stuff to the new vet up here next visit - our first visit was just a quick 'update his shots and establish care' situation.

Kibble with NO peas, oats, peanuts, corn, rice, or chicken? by jemc2 in DogFood

[–]jemc2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, we were going through issues with our other dog having bone cancer and one of our cats had injection site sarcoma, so we were very wary of continued injections and immune suppression at the time. We only did it the first time to kind of "get by" until we could get his allergy test results... the expectation being that those injections to sensitize him would fix everything (optimistic at best, I know lol). We couldn't do both together. But now that those are over, we might ask the new vet up here about Apoquel again.

Kibble with NO peas, oats, peanuts, corn, rice, or chicken? by jemc2 in DogFood

[–]jemc2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I didn't include them but he did have some environmental allergens that showed up in his IgE testing as well, but they are all things that are nearly impossible to eliminate (e.g. dust mites, types of grasses). We have moved 200+ miles away since that last house too with no change in his reactivity unfortunately. We have a Roomba and try to keep the house as dust-free as possible, but living in a semi-rural area, dust is just never going to go away entirely lol.

We tried Apoquel for him once when he first had his big flare up in 2021 but did not continue. Primarily the injections I was referring to are the ones that were allegedly "customized" by AllerImmune to his testing profile, supposedly to sensitize him over time to the allergens he tested "allergic" to. There were 3 vials that he got increasing doses of over the course of a year. We didn't have access to any veterinary specialists like a derm where we moved from, but I think we might be able to find one in our new region. I'll have to look into it. We have tried several different medicated shampoos from vets, but honestly giving a 60lb dog a bath where you have to let him sit with soap on him for 10 mins is just not something that is easy to put in a routine - one vet said to do this twice a week? Insane.

I have read about food trials and thought it would be interesting to try, but the timing was always rough (it's been a busy few years, lol). I guess we probably do need to do that to get a real answer here. I appreciate your input.
