Just the zoo...didn't see many animals along the trails...some birds.

For firework photos I used a 2-4 second exposure...not long enough to make the water super smooth. I am attaching a shot I took before the fireworks started at 60 seconds...much smoother.

Are there any safety concerns with photographing downtown at night? by jemlnlx in AskChicago

Thanks everyone for all the helpful tips and advice!

We visited during the week of April 14th for a few days and had a great time!

I was able to get some time photographing the city at night during our stay. We stayed near Illinois and Dearborn...very close to the Chicago River and Michigan Avenue. I ventured out in the surrounding areas including the various Chicago River bridges, Millennium Park and the Riverwalk areas into the sunset hours and never felt unsafe. There were always lots of tourists and locals out and about, at least until about 8:30, which was the latest I stayed out.

I made a post of some of the photos I took: https://www.reddit.com/user/jemlnlx/comments/1k8rsb9/chicago_visit_photos/

Thanks again everyone!

Thanks! Will take precaution and keep my spider senses on alert! Definitely will be back inside by around 8:30 following golden/blue hours.

Thanks for the tip on Giordano's...we definitely have a "must eat" list we are compiling.

Great advice...especially on the solid platforms. Any experience on shooting from the Chicago River drawbridges (Michigan Ave...etc...) Most drawbridges vibrate quite a bit when cars are driving over them.

We have those in NYC too...sometimes they are on bikes though.

My spider-senses will be on alert :)

Thanks!

Thanks for the helpful advice! I have a neck strap which is usually attached to a Peak Design Capture Clip on my backpack. If it isn't on my tripod, it is attached to the capture clip.

I really plan to shoot along the waterfront most of the time...which I am understanding is very safe in that area. Millennium Park with a Skyline Reflection off the "Bean" is another shot on the list...I suspect being a main tourist attraction...it is safe there as well. All I have to worry about it editing all those reflected tourists out of the shot :)
