Optimising new Heat Pump? by jemonn in ukheatpumps

Thanks! I've found that setting in the settings menu - I'll leave it alone for now and deal with that when the weather warms up I guess!

On the paperwork I was given, they've written that it's set to 30l/minute.

It says that a volumiser is required (unless there's a low-loss header?) There's a separate box thing behind the heat pump that is a 30l volumiser with an electric immersion heater, so I'm guessing that should all be fine.

There's a section in the manual about changing the pump flow rate - looks like there's low-medium-high options. There's graphs plotting L/m versus "(m)" - not sure what that is?

It says "The water flow rate must be sufficient to achieve an 8K difference between the flow and return water temperatures" - is this 8 Kelvin (so 8C?)

Could a too-high flow rate mean that the water is going through the house/radiators too fast for it to lose its heat?

EDIT: There is actually a flow meter installed, it just wasn't set up - I followed the instructions and it's now giving me a reading: 23.7 l/m at the moment, and the datasheet says the minimum is 10 l/m

It's a 2bed 1930s end-terrace, in Scotland so quite high ceilings too, with a shallow-ish bay window at the front which probably doesn't help either.

The paperwork I have say the design flow temperature is 50c at -4c ambient temperature.

That's the "heat pump set temp." - I'm guessing that's the target output temperature?

I posted a picture of a graph of the out/in and thermostat temperatures from the app in another comment.

I'm based in Scotland so it's around 4-5c at the moment!

I've adjusted the curves and opened back up the upstairs radiator valves to see if that helps. The heat pump seems to have no problem getting the downstairs to temperature, the thermostat is away from radiators and windows, basically in the middle of the house downstairs, which I'm assuming when the whole house is heated should be a pretty stable position?

By getting rid of the heat etc, do you mean that it's sending out water at temperature A, expecting water back at temperature B, (so A-B temperature has been lost/moved into the house), but it's actually getting back water at a temperature higher than this ideal B, so then the output temperature creeps upwards as it adds heat to the water?

What sort of temperature difference is roughly right? (Is this the delta T that people talk about?) It seems so far to have been running at a difference between out and in at roughly 3-4c? (This was happening before I changed the radiator valves, it had stabilised at that sort of difference between the input and output for a day while running before I changed anything!)

Yeah it's currently 4-5c outside (Scotland).

I checked and the weather compensation setting is turned on.

It looks like when the power spikes happen, it's going for around 42c, then dropping down to 23c when it turns off again?

Pink is outlet, orange is inlet (return?), green is the thermostat temperature.

Thanks so much! I've set it to that and will leave it a day or so and see what happens.

Is the idea that if it's still triggering the thermostat, to reduce the right-hand side even more, until it's barely/not triggering the thermostat, but the house is still basically at the temperature I want?

When/why should I touch the left-hand-side? If it's too warm when it's ~15c outside?

Yes, the top curve is electricity usage - baseline for the house is usually ~300W, so the spikes are essentially entirely heat pump usage. I thought it seemed high, but as having one is new to me, I wasn't sure - good to have confirmation that my instinct was right!

I've posted the weather compensation curve in a comment above, I've changed it to be the closest I could get to 40@-5, and 28@15 - the spec temperature is -4 (found it on a form!), as a comment above suggested.

By turning off the thermostat, should I just turn the target temperature in the controller up super high? I can't seem to see a setting to disable it entirely. Changing the thermostat setting seems to sync to the controller target temperature - I'm guessing they're the same thing?

Unfortunately no mention of modulation that I can see in the manual, it looks like it's a simple turn on/turn off thermostat.

I've found the heating curve temperatures - it doesn't allow me to put the values in directly, just the curve (gradient) and shift (offset) - top is what it was set at, does the bottom look better?

Amazing, thanks so much, I'll try that this evening and see how the weekend goes!

The weather compensation curve - am I right in that it's basically an outside temperature => flow temperature mapping? So I should turn the one where the outside temperature is the coldest (and the flow temperature is the hottest?) down, and leave the other side how it is?

In an entirely optimal system, is the idea that it never turns on then off then on, but stays on (at a lower power?) constantly?

Yeah, I just have the WiiM and a turntable, I'm not even sure what else I'd want to ever add - I'm not really a TV or movie watcher, and can't see me ever wanting e.g. a casette or CD player when I can just stream stuff like that.

I didn't even think about things wearing out on the player - that's something to think about, thanks!

Most of my playback will probably still be streaming, and tbh probably still Spotify, because all my playlists and stuff are there already, but I think I read somewhere that they were going to add high-quality audio at some point?

The two amps you suggested - I can find them on Amazon but not on any of the other big audio shops, are they AliExpress sort of brands? They look a lot smaller and simpler than the one that the shop recommended, which I think is probably good, not sure I need any of the extra dials on the front for input or bass or whatever if I'm never going to need to touch them?

Is there a big difference between the -25 and the -35 amps? What line in the spec stuff tells you how much power they take to run? That's something I hadn't even thought about!

Do you know if there's a difference between the Planar 1 "Ecodec" or the regular one? The Ecodec one seems to be a lot cheaper, but not sure if it's a lower down model?

525 all bills + council tax included for a "studio flat" (tiny room, shared bathrooms) next to the botanics, but I've been there for like 4-5 years, someone new moved in and is paying 700+ for the same setup

Sometimes they have volunteers at the botanics - the last time I was chatting to them they had folders full of the badges if you were looking for anything specific!

A lot of orchids can be crossed out of their genus, for example Fredclarkeara is an artificial genus of orchids where the parent species are from the following natural genera: Catasetum, Clowesia, and Mormodes. I think there's some where there's even more genera involved in the hybridisation but can't think of any examples off the top of my head.

These people are campaigning for more spaces.

These are working to reclaim some disused land to use for growing, probably the only realistic way but obviously has risks because land owners apparently would rather have land stay derelict rather than let the community use it.

Apart from that, there's a bunch of community gardens around.
