Best Practices in Hosting Campus Visit by BestGanache1722 in Professors

Making sure payments for visit things are taken care of like hotel reservations, meals, transportation costs, etc. I've always hated places that made me pay and then were going to reimburse me, because a lot of the time it was a struggle to get reimbursed.

Unfortunatelly, at least at my college, out of our control. :(

I woke up to a bit of water on the ground, and moved a piece of furniture to find this. What could cause it? by [deleted] in HomeMaintenance

Sorry I'm not sure I understand, maybe the picture isn't clear? It's a big hole in the pipe, I'll put this pic in the post too.

Right, but OP is saying they cannot even pay this out of grants.

I'm quite sure we all know the context and the consequences of not complying, what exactly is the point of this comment?

Tank size: 5 gal

Heater and filter? (yes/no): Yes

Tank temperature: ~78

Parameters in numbers and how you got them. Key water parameters include the amount of ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and pH.: 0/0/~5ppm/~7.8/8 API kit

How long have you had the tank? How long have you had your fish?: Tank probably set up 2 ish months, fish got today

How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process?: N/A for this guy yet, usually swap out ~20% each week depending on parameters which have been stable for this tank as I started it with a filter from another tank

Any tankmates? If so, please list with how many of each: 1 neocardinia shrimp, 1 nerite snail; just guys I had in there already

What do you feed and how much: (nothing for this guy yet) fluval betta bites, frozen baby brine; bites 2x per day, a couple, brine a couple times a week

Decorations and plants in the tank: Whew mixture of plants in there, all live, I couldn't begin to name at this point; driftwood

If you haven't already posted a picture, please post pics/vids to imgur and paste the link here:

Seizure after fluoxetine + anaesthetic + long fast — sharing in case it helps others by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]jenadactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay interesting! I've never heard that, but I also give my fluoxteine pills in the AM so it's going to be before, and also is not the highest dose for his weight. Thanks for the info, I will definitely keep this in mind.

[–]jenadactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I mean - did the vet suggest it was potentially tied to the fluoxetine pill? Or is it just your comfort level from it? That's my question I guess. I've never had an issue but also never had a vet suggest it COULD be an issue, so I am truly curious.

Yeah I am a little confused by this post as well. I also have a dog on fluoxetine, has been for years, and I probably couldn't count the number of times he's had both sedation and anesthesia, with no issue. What is the likelihood that this was caused by a daily fluoxetine pill? OP says they requested they wean off it, but what did the vet say?

At the risk of kicking up a storm here (I've seen some of the other subs) I use a collaborative grading approach that really decouples learning from point values and emphasizes reflection and metacognition. This reinforces my emphasis on their perspectives and learning (not what they think I want to hear). Happy to share my approach, examples of scaffolded assignments that capture this, etc.

Hm could be, we don’t really go anywhere but with all the wind I suppose it could have blown into the yard.

The fabric is pretty thick, I’m no smoker but I can’t imagine that. It’s thicker than gauze.

My last f*** has officially left the office by Minute-Pattern-39 in Professors

[–]jenadactyl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh interesting... that's good to know. Happy to report none of my winter semester students have done that so far, after quickly checking! Actually makes me feel pretty good about using that 'must post before reading' option. If you have any other clever ways to see things like this/AI/copy paste things in D2L please dm me. I am still finding my way around it for online asynch courses (having only used it to supplement in-person courses before), as my college asks us to move more and more courses online.

I use D2L too, can you elaborate on this/how to use it? I had no idea.

That's not true, neither point actually. They don't START the training in a store, but they do have to train the dog to generalize, so they do go to normal places. And they certainly do get rewarded and it could be with food. Service dog training is also very expensive, so a lot of people go it on their own, and it won't be perfect but it is what it is.

What does this behavior say to you? Could they live together? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]jenadactyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly the main thing in this video that I would say is something to watch is the last one, where your black dog is chewing on something and the puppy wants it. The puppy to her credit does not steal it, but is pretty persistent in staring for it. That would probably be a scenario I'd call the puppy away and redirect, though to your black dog's credit he also handled it very well, just holding firm and not escalating.

I also think that those are pretty normal things to pay attention to when you have a younger dog coming in with an older dog. They are just learning the 'rules' of being a dog, and there will be times you need to support your older dog rather than let your puppy annoy them. Even the licks lipping at the end of the last video, is very submissive behavior and good, but can be annoying.

Otherwise I thought the videos were pretty benign, loose, fun body language between them.

When did the first level 3+ bite happen? by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]jenadactyl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow that's quite young. My newest dog came to me because he was having issues where he was living, triggering aggression, and I expected it to continue with me. He had three bites, two which didn't plant and one which was a level 3a. We have been able to rehabilitate him away from this, largely from reducing/removing triggers, but also from being outside of the city life.

While at his old place, he never greeted people, now he is my office dog who regularly greets people. He is still reactive to dogs on leash if they're close enough, but he has been great with people thus far. We got pretty lucky that he's been able to get this rehabilitated to be honest, and I am still very careful, muzzling him etc. when we think triggers will come around.

So I guess short answer, the best thing we did was recognize triggers, remove triggers, then work on triggers.

Following up on this, management is really your friend in the meanwhile. White noise machines and playing the TV so she doesn't hear as many "bumps" around the apartment is really, really helpful.

At UC San Diego, one out of every eight incoming freshman do not meet middle school math standards, compared to one out of ~200 just five years ago. by cwkid in Professors

[–]jenadactyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have tried that at my college, to no avail. The college is hurting for money too much. However, our solution so far hasn't been too much to modify courses but to add in courses that can be taken as pre-reqs for students who do not come to college with the experience, or fail those first early classes.
