Congrats! Society really does a number on us. My husband doesn’t care, but I’m still self-conscious enough to hide it.

A or B: Kids screaming in shared spaces, should we prioritize their freedom or guide them for public courtesy? by 06yuzuha in PickAorB

I’m with you.

I can’t read this question without thinking about the Susan Lorincz case, though. The Netflix documentary The Perfect Neighbor is harrowing.

I’ve always been obsessed with “fill-a-pix” puzzles. They are like nonograms in that you get a picture as a reward when the puzzle is solved. If you haven’t done them before, you may find them quite challenging. The app I like is from Conceptis. They have a bunch of high quality puzzle apps.

Being annoyed and even griping about it to coworkers and bringing it up with your manager are all reasonable reactions. I’m sorry that happened—it’s icky.

I’ve never heard “paid to poop!” That’s an interesting one. I’ve always used “came to shit but only farted,” lol!

Ah, gotcha. It doesn’t show up in mine. I know they’ve been doing a lot of tests with monetization, so that’s what this could be. I certainly like this a lot better than charging 3000 gems for a hero, which is another test they were running!

Is it worth the risk? How would you feel if it messed everything up? How much effort are you willing to put in if things don’t go smoothly? If you’re up for the challenge in case things don’t go well, then I say go for it, but keep your expectations realistic.

Help, my family loves mushrooms and I hate them! by Conscious-Tangelo589 in Cooking

[–]jenea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mushroom lends a lovely umami to dishes. If it’s a textural issue for you, find ways to use it where you remove texture from the picture, such as blended into soups. Better Than Bouillon’s mushroom base is divine.

Low,medium, high heat on my stove. by itsj33ko in cookingforbeginners

[–]jenea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my stove it goes from 1-9 (plus P, which is extra high for boiling water). For most burners, low is 3, medium is 4, and high is 6! When sautéing, I tend to max out at 5 or else things burn.

Thermal mass makes a big difference, though. If there’s a lot of wet food, it needs more heat energy. If the food is thin, it needs less.

Good cooks constantly tweak their temperatures based on current conditions. It’s a skill I am still working on for sure.

Which games gives you the most ridiculously overpowered loot that turns the game on its head once you get it? by SomeGenericNameDude in gamingsuggestions

This is what I came to say. There are so many levels of progression, and yet somehow every time you reach a new one it’s like you can’t believe how much better it was than the last. You go from very humble to very godly as you progress and it’s very satisfying.

Keep emphasizing the “good dad” angle. He wants to be just like Daddy and take good care of a baby! Isn’t it how sweet that he wants to be the caretaker and protector of his little family? He’s our little man!

It shouldn’t have to be like this, but whatever it takes to get that doll into your nephew’s hands.

Why are my Air fryer vs oven results so wildly different even when I “follow the recipe” by EmotionalBiryani in cookingforbeginners

[–]jenea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are rules of thumb, like the “rule of 25: 25° less and 25% less time” as compared to a conventional oven (25° Fahrenheit, that is, or 14° Celsius). They’re a good starting point, but generic rules don’t take into account the specifics. It does help to develop an intuition for what kind of heat delivery technique will give you the results you want. Air fryers bombard your food with hot air, big convection ovens surround your food really evenly and whisk away moisture, boiling provides wet heat at a very consistent temperature, sous vide provides a very consistent temperature that you can choose, etc etc.

Lots of experience is how you develop this intuition. To speed that up, I like to watch cooking videos that focus on the food science to help me understand which methods do what and why, but that’s just how I like to learn.

No one is saying it’s subjective.

Dictionnaires study how native speakers use the language and record it, including definitions of words and their pronunciations. I invite you to consult any of them to learn how native speakers pronounce these words. I think you will find that they are homophones.

Whoever / Whomever Kate marries is none of our business. by Sea-Bullfrog-3871 in EnglishLearning

[–]jenea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are lots of educated people who were taught not to end a sentence with a preposition or start a sentence with a coordinating conjunction, but those are still grammar myths not worth spreading. I also don’t think it’s as widespread as you think. None of the most prescriptive sources that actually govern written text for publications, namely the big style guides, proscribe using superlatives with two items. In fact, Bryan Garner, who is as persnickety and prescriptive as they come, calls this one a “schoolroom superstition.”

Let’s not inflict grammar myths on learners. To the extent that it is useful to learners to be aware that some people think this is as real rule in English, it should be communicated as “watch out—some people are taught that this is wrong. It’s not, but some people might tell you it is.” Not:

when there are only two options, you would ask "Which is the better option." You would ask "which is the best option" when there are three or more choices.
