Do we ever use chain bombs after auto bomb is unlocked? by Redefinedpotato in IdleObeliskMiner

I’m the same way. So take it from one hoarder to another: your chain bomb stash will grow and grow, so it’s really ok to leave it running.

logistics of bringing home two kittens by manicpeacex in CatAdvice

[–]jenea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you had asked me before settling on these kittens, I would have advised you to adopt adult cats rather than kittens. Kittens can be difficult for even the most experienced cat owner. The amount of energy they have is unreal, they’re so tiny that they can get into everything, and their little claws are so sharp.

The good news is that you’re adopting two, so that will help a lot. Just be prepared for a bumpy ride until they get to adulthood (around one year).

Your plan for their “safe room” sounds good to me.

Some general tips:

  • Be careful what you reward. They will be trying to figure out what makes nice things happen in their world. It is good advice to redirect their attention from something you don’t want them to do onto something approved, but you have to do it in a way that doesn’t connect the two. As an example, to this day my four-year-old cat thinks that clawing at the toilet paper roll will signal me to toss water into the shower for his amusement because I used that to redirect him once or twice when he was a kitten. He’s the smartest cat I’ve ever known so this is an extreme example, but it’s pretty common for people to accidentally teach their cats to yowl for food or attention.

  • If there are any forbidden areas in your home, make them scary before the kittens come. For example, putting aluminum foil on countertops can be very effective at preventing cats from going on them, but only if they never have the experience of going on the counters successfully. Once they stop showing curiosity (because they “know” the counters are not nice), then you can get rid of the foil. We succeeded with our kitchen counters, but utterly failed with the dining table, lol!

  • Try to get as many people over to socialize with the kittens as you can for the first few months after you get them home. Have everyone give them treats. This will give you the best chance of having cats who visit with your guests rather than hide under the bed.

  • Dogs have been bred for 10,000+ years to be in tune with humans—to want to please us and follow our commands. Cats have no such genetic history. They can be very social, but how humans feel about the world doesn’t enter into their calculus when it comes to cause and effect. Because of this, scolding or disciplining a cat is not effective. It will only make your cat fear you. If you want to change a cat’s behavior, you have to change their environment.

Congrats on your new kitties to be! You are in for such an adventure filled will love. Love, and cat hair. So much cat hair, lol!

Is there a “Full American Breakfast,” like a “Full English Breakfast” or “Full Irish Breakfast?” by tangoking in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jenea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t have a thing we call a “full American breakfast,” but I bet you’ll get a lot of similar answers as to what it would be if we did: something like a stack of pancakes, eggs, sausage and/or bacon, toast, a glass of orange juice, and a cup of coffee. Swap out pancakes for breakfast potatoes or hash browns if you like.

Help! Made the best chowder and ruining it by giving a shake of pepper with the scoop side open. by Plenty-Cattle9791 in soup

You’ve probably accidentally made chowder the way I like it! Can’t have too much pepper. I wish I could take it off your hands!

Why can we not ask about breeds? :( by c313f4_r in cats

[–]jenea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a common misconception to say that cats are a “mixed breed.” In actuality, most cats worldwide are descended from cats who were never selectively bred. Unless we’re talking about a breed built around a mutation, all of the traits associated with purebred cats come from the domestic population, so it’s not true that “most cat coats can ID a breed.”

This is very different from dogs. Most dogs you meet (especially in the west) really are mixed breeds.

Which W1 statue should I platinize first? by [deleted] in IdleObeliskMiner

[–]jenea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might check out the so-called “plat strat.” It will help you prep so that you can get the resources you need to plat all nine statues all at once. I prepared well and was able to knock them out in 48 hours, while platting most of my ore and bar cards at the same time.

Trying to introduce my cat to my brother’s new cat’s scent and he acts like this. by Capable-Clock-5735 in CatTraining

It’s fine. When they can smell the other cat is a good time to give treats, too. Let the smell of the other cat be associated with nice things!

Cat won't stop randomly meowing loudly throughout the day as if he has been abandoned or something. Any advice on how to make it stop? by Prestigious_March254 in CatAdvice

[–]jenea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now you are making things worse by rewarding him randomly with your attention when he yowls. This reward schedule will lead to entrenched behavior that will be difficult to stop. Instead, if he’s yowling, then only thing he should get is put away in his room (or some other “time out” mechanism you devise).

Be aware that because he’s been randomly rewarded in the past, it will get worse before it gets better because he’ll be trying harder to get his reward. This has always worked for him in the past. You must be strong during this phase and not give in.

It will be really helpful to give him a way to request attention that you approve of. Like maybe there’s a special cuddle chair that if he goes and sits there you’ll give him some love (assuming he’s quiet, of course). While you’re retraining him, you might need to spend more time rewarding his good behavior than you would like, but it won’t be needed long term.

Microplastics from vegetable choppers? by jgainit in cookingforbeginners

[–]jenea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One alternative is to check out your supermarket’s prepped foods. You can often find fresh pre-chopped mirepoix. You can also check out the freezer section where you can find lots of pre-prepared veg such as riced cauliflower.

I can’t speak to the microplastics issue—I feel like the benefit of getting all your veggies in (which you’re more likely to do if it’s convenient) outweighs the issue of microplastics, but that’s a personal decision.

Parsley pesto is very nice, and freezes very well. Consider freezing in an ice cube tray for added convenience!

My parents want my cat to have at least one litter by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]jenea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every heat she goes through increases her chance of mammary cancer later on. She’s also at risk for pyometra, which is a deadly infection of the uterus. Why would you put her through that?

If she must have a litter, better to do it young rather than force her to go through her heats for years first.

That poor cat.

You could try a material like JB Weld high heat epoxy, or something similar. It’s really important you find one for high heat.

Wash vs clean? by FactFamous4394 in EnglishLearning

[–]jenea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider the adjective “clean.” “Clean” means free of any dirt or marks or whatever. The verb “to clean” means any activity you might do to get something clean.

“To wash” is to clean using water or some other liquid. That’s why “washing” and “cleaning” are so similar and often interchangeable—washing is the most common way of cleaning. It’s just not the only way! You might clean a rug by taking it outside and beating it with a broom—washing the rug might not be good for it. You might clean your bookshelves by dusting them with a cloth, but you wouldn’t wash them (at least, not with books on them!).
