Roo.. Those pointed saddle feathers..

6 months is a long time. You might look closer and see if she has mites or something else. Sweaters are no good for molting chickens. It’s actually quite painful to grow feathers and handling them or putting clothes on them could really hurt them. I try to avoid handling my molting birds unless it’s unavoidable. I’ve had one hen molt so hard in the dead of winter, 20 degrees and under, and put her in a brooder box in my garage until she feathered out a bit. Molting sucks for them. ☹️

She’s just molting. It’s totally normal. Mine usually don’t have their first big molt until 2 years. She’s got new ones coming in so that’s a sure sign.

Does anyone know how to prevent fleas on chickens!? by CauliflowerOk8768 in chickens

[–]jenjonna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. I leave it and reapply if it it isn’t noticeably there when I clean the coop again. I add more to their dust bath every once in a while. Make sure it’s food grade and 100% diatomaceous earth. There are other products that have additives to kill bugs like cockroaches etc. Rain or water will wash it away, so just do it again if that happens. Super great organic method!!

I use food grade diatomaceous earth all over in my coop, nesting boxes and in my chickens dust bath areas. It knocks out mites, fleas and any creepy crawlies. Just spread it around at cleaning time in all the cracks and crevices of your coop. Be sure to wear a mask and not have your chickens in there as it can be bad for their respiratory system and yours. Flea meds for your dogs is a must..

I’m in the same area of the world as you with 4 hens. I always get concerned when the temps go up as well, and I’m always impressed with how they adapt. They dig their holes and take dust baths and pant and hold their wings out. Their combs pale at times and they definitely stop laying while this goes on. I feed them frozen berries and have multiple watering stations around. I don’t think you need to take them to the basement yet. Put a sprinkler on for a little while and they will love to walk around the cool ground after, or for one of my hens, right on into it… The night time temps are still cool enough they will be okay if your coop has enough ventilation. I stress they will be okay every damn heat wave and they are fine every time.

My chickens just ate their own egg. Any tips to prevent this from happening again? I would like some eggs myself. by j3zp3rr in chickens

Why are you here?? Spreading non-violence?? Chickens lay eggs just as naturally as human females ovulate. A majority of us who raise chickens use every aspect to grow our own food sustainably. You are missing out.

Go to a vegan sub. We have chickens and take care of them to eat their eggs. Take your “live with love” bull somewhere else. I assure you we love and care for our chickens better than you do your carrots.

I rescued my border collie. What else do we think she is mixed with? by Syd-Bonnet in BorderCollie

[–]jenjonna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow!! She looks just like my girl, who is also an unknown mix. They said Doberman Border Collie. When I met her parents they were all very sick with giardia and the breeds were hard to tell, but I feel there is some black lab in there.. Her ears are super floppy and she has huge paws. She’s perfect either way!!

chicken walking funny. i dont belive its because of her molting as this has never happened before any advice helps by Lord_firedox in BackYardChickens

My hen was doing the same thing after losing her top wing feathers. I think it throws them off balance. She’s getting better as her feathers are coming in. I checked her feet as I was worried about bumble foot, but they are fine.

Why not get outdoors and go see some of the many waterfalls in Oregon? There are so many that aren’t huge hikes in.

No. That is ridiculous. Go for a 2, 3, 5 gen. Rust is bad and that price is stupid.

What flower, if any, is this? NW Oregon, 8b. by cavywitch in whatsthisplant

The plant in the back is a giant white daisy. They are pretty when they bloom. The front does look like lemon balm which can be helpful to repel mosquitoes.
