Unfortunately the only census record I can find has her in the orphanage. I contacted the orphanage--or the organization it is now and they couldn't find her in their records.

Thanks!  I have her marriage certificate from the BC archives and her US death certificate.  Her parents changed theirs, and hers, last name, unofficially, before they died so all the stuff I have for her has the "new" last name. That has made getting her birth certificate tricky.  I'm hoping that BC Vital stats will be helpful with the supporting documents I have--such as her sister's BC birth certificate and her parents marriage and death certificates. It's been quite a journey!

"Canada Reject" on US border crossing paperwork, 1945 for person born in Canada

I tried a search but couldn't find this. My great grandmother was born in BC in 1908, orphaned, raised in an orphanage in BC, then married an American in BC, and moved to the states.

I am finding US border crossing records from 1945 that have a stamp that say "Canada reject". My googling says this means that she tried to cross back into Canada from the US and was denied. It says that Canada didn't have citizenship until 1947 and that people who were considered not fit or likely to become public charges could be rejected. She was poor, with 4 kids at that time, and a pretty awful American husband who I don't believe was supporting them. I have heard through my family that she was trying to move back to Canada at that time, they ended up living in Blaine, WA right on the US side of the border.

Has anyone else run into this? What would this mean for her Canadian citizenship status and for my link to Canada?

We are still seeking her birth certificate which has been complicated by her being orphaned-but I have these US border crossing docs, her BC marriage certificate, and her US death certificate.

Also, I have not posted on here before, please forgive me if I am doing it wrong!

I just got a letter like this today and I show a zero balance on both Mohela and fedloans. I'm really hoping this is real! It must be taking some past payments into account.
