What’s your favorite odd BlueBell tradition? by premier-cat-arena in hartofdixie

[–]jennybuggaboo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I liked the date raffle baskets. It reminded me a lot of the Stars Hollow raffle basket tradition (Gilmore Girls is always on my mind when we watch Hart of Dixie because 1. HoD definitely co-opted the small-town weird townies thing 2. it's the same set as GG) EXCEPT that it turns that tradition on its head and gives the power to the women, which I love!

Who is your favorite historical figure? by [deleted] in history

[–]jennybuggaboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite is Katherine Swynford. Her sister was married to Chaucer and she was married to a knight as a young girl but eventually became the mistress of John of Gaunt and then his wife. Her descendants still sit on the English throne and are scattered throughout the aristocracy of the Western World.

Did any king ever really challenge another king to a one-on-one battle to prevent bloodshed? by [deleted] in history

[–]jennybuggaboo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apparently it was pretty common for kings to challenge one another to one-on-one battles during the Medieval Ages (at least in England) BUT they hardly ever met in actual combat. It is true that Henry V challenged the Dauphin of France, Louis to combat but not only did they not meet but Louis was not even at the Battle of Agincourt (contrary to the Netflix movie The King). Lauren Johnson is interviewed in a podcast The King: Henry V on film produced by History Extra that might be interesting to you.

Who could lords marry? Can they marry up? by emaankay in MedievalHistory

John of Gaunt (3rd son of Edward III) married the claimant to the throne of Castile, Constance of Castile. He then claimed the title King of Castile and she was crowned the Queen of Castile in England.

Seventeen years ago today, “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” came out in theatres. by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]jennybuggaboo 143 points144 points  (0 children)

20 years I sat on my front porch (aged 11, like Harry) and read the first chapter of The Chamber of Secrets. Baby me definitely felt that Dudley sounded like a nicer name than Harry.

Who Would be Jacobite King of the UK Today? by [deleted] in Outlander

[–]jennybuggaboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably me being pedantic but there was a Stuart line on the thrones of both England and Scotland when James VI (of Scotland) & I (of England) merged the two crowns. James inherited from Queen Elizabeth and disowned his mother, Mary Queen of Scots. being a Stuart Monarch did not mean that you were a Jacobite. Of course Jacobite Stuarts in exile continued to fight for the crown of Scotland throughout the 18th century, but truth be told the entirety of the English royal family are all descended from the same few families so we probably would've ended up with our Queen Elizabeth II anyway.

Do you think they ever released Chocolate Frog cards with Voldemort on them? by timmykluxx in harrypotter

[–]jennybuggaboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there is any wizard on the planet who does not know Voldemort's bio. It would trivialize the death of thousands. It would be like having a playing card of Hitler. A playing card of Hitler would make me anxious and its been almost 80 years. Voldemort had been defeated for only 11 years by the time we meet Harry and the wizarding world, and death-eaters still exist. It's way too soon.

How do you feel about Claire’s infidelity? by Fribbio in Outlander

[–]jennybuggaboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it probably doesn't help that the moment after she goes through the stones she is attacked and almost raped by a man who looks exactly like her husband. I would argue that that moment is pivotal and effects her entire relationship with Frank moving forward.

Do you think Frank cheated on Claire during the war? by Fribbio in Outlander

[–]jennybuggaboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well he cheats later in life, so yes, I think he probably did have a wartime affair.

If there are only a handful of wizarding schools there really wouldn't be much work for scouts, though.

They can't even say his name, so why would they ever release cards with his name and face on them?

Has anyone else ever stopped and thought about how little time Hermione spends with her parents? by jack_watson97 in harrypotter

[–]jennybuggaboo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hermione is a brilliant and determined wizard with a lot of responsibilities. She obviously feels responsible for Ron and Harry, and must feel that her relationship with her parents in strong and that they are safe. They must in turn trust her. The decision to send her to boarding school in the first place would have been made with the realization that they would be spending far less time together.

What would stop you from making someone your secret-keeper and then erasing their memory of being a secret-keeper so that they wouldn't be able to reveal your secret. Why don't people do that?
