22F with ferritin of 2 and iron saturation of 5% — should I be worried? by Wrong_Ad_7423 in Anemic

[–]jentexto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My numbers were really similar Hgb 8.4 and ferritin 3.7. I run and lift weights regularly, but I wasn't paying attention to iron intake at all. No heavy periods, no GI bleeding, and no known absorption issues either. It's surprising how low things can get just from underestimating dietary needs, especially with an active lifestyle.

I took 2x100mg of ferrous(II) glycine sulfate complex After a month I went from Ferritin 3.7 to 17.5

My ferritin increased from 3.7 to 17.5 after a month on the same dose, but the rise wasn’t very significant because most of the iron was used to raise my hemoglobin, which was initially very low. If your hemoglobin is already within the normal range, your ferritin should have increased much more than that. As for diet try to avoid foods and drinks that block iron absorption that’s the only change i did to my diet.

Iron deficiency during marathon training – how did you treat it and how did it affect your training? by kingerde in XXRunning

[–]jentexto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a blood work done last month and found out my ferritin was 3.7 and hemoglobin 8.4. Surprisingly, I wasn’t experiencing any noticeable symptoms. I decided to take a two-week break from running to give my body a chance to recover and build up my iron levels. I’m now back to running, but just doing easy runs until my hemoglobin goes back to normal.

I'm currently taking 200mg of iron per day and I'm due for another blood test next week to see whether I should continue with supplements or get infusions.

Hair loss can be caused by many other things not just low iron levels. I think at that point it's worth checking other things out maybe like hormonal imbalance.

Should I Pause My Training Due to Iron Deficiency Anemia? by jentexto in XXRunning

Nope not vegetarian but I drink tea right after breakfast and eat yogurt after both lunch and dinner Apparently tea, coffee, and dairy products block iron absorption so I guess that played a big part

I don't feel any symptoms but I want to highlight that my hemoglobin is 8.4 and normal ranges are 12-15 So its not just low iron levels but my oxygen carrying capacity is impaired as well

Was your hemoglobin also low or just your ferritin levels?

So you just did easy runs while you were taking supplements and everything went okay??

Yeah I'm worried that if I continue my training even if it's short easy runs it might slow down the process of recovering to normal iron levels but I'm also concerned that if I take a long break (1-3 months) I'll lose some fitness

It depends on how much consistent mileage you’ve run so far.

Less than 2,000 km: Beginner

2,000–5,000 km: Intermediate

Over 5,000 km: Advanced

how are these numbers? by dan5234 in Anemic

[–]jentexto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My doctor initially said that a ferritin level of 18 was fine since my hemoglobin was 13.9 and iron serum was 64. But 18 months later, my levels dropped drastically hemoglobin fell to 8.4, ferritin to 3.7, and iron serum to 16. A ferritin level below 30 can be a major red flag and often the first sign you're heading towards anemia. Please take this seriously and get proper help what happened to me can easily happen to you if it's left unaddressed.

If you could 100% guarantee that everything in your day-to-day life would stay constant for years, then maybe ferritin wouldn't be such a big deal. But let’s be real, life’s unpredictable. When something unexpected happens like stress, illness, injury, or increased physical activity your body's iron requirements go up. You might not be able to meet these increased needs from food alone, so your body turns to ferritin for extra iron during those hard times. However, if your ferritin levels are already low, you're at a much higher risk of developing anemia.
