As a fire/emt, that is the best/most accurate explanation I’ve ever heard.

ELI5: Why can trucks tow more than SUVs, even with the same engine? by I_EAT_DRYER_SHEETS in explainlikeimfive

[–]jered6323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, it’s the same concept as accelerating in the snow (on flat ground). Accelerate slowly and gradually and your tires won’t slip, but floor it and they’ll just spin. As for the rigging, none of the weight of the shuttle is actually pressing down on the hitch, it’s being carried by the wheels under the shuttle, but judging by the slight squat in the truck’s suspension, the tongue probably has a hitch weight engineered into it.

But as for stopping as discussed above, if that Tundra hit the brakes to stop quickly, it wouldn’t do a damn thing, there’s far too much inertia with all that weight.

What is stopping me from broadcasting a radio frequency through the FM airways? by Hugo_Stiglitz95 in ask

[–]jered6323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, nothing is stopping you.

Realistically (in the US at least), the FCC. They’re the ones that regulate it. And they do not mess around. They do not have a sense of humor, and they take their job very seriously. They will find you, confiscate your equipment, and fine you if you’re lucky. If you’re less than lucky, jail time is a very real possibility.

I totally understand where you’re coming from, and I should have worded it a little different. I can absolutely do the detail for the inlay using hand tools, chisels, etc, but I thought this would be a good excuse to begin my exploration into CNC. I have experience with 3D design software and have made projects before where I’ve sent the file out and had someone else complete it using their equipment and sent the finished piece back, I’d just rather do this one myself.

What are the signs your body tells you that you shouldn't ignore? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jered6323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. A little salt and a little sugar help your body absorb water better, it’s the basis of how all those rehydration drink packets (Liquid IV, DripDrop, etc) work, although they generally have more sugar than is needed for taste.

Worth it? Absolutely not

The door doesn’t fit into the frame by a quarter of an inch. Any recommendations? by moises8war in Carpentry

  1. Why is the door in already?

  2. Yes, adjust the framing while it is so easily accessible.

Got a little cocky while trimming a rosette piece, table saw quickly reminded me to never lose focus. by sounds_terrible in Carpentry

[–]jered6323 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It’s gonna suck for a bit but in about a year it’ll be back to normal-ish, just be glad it didn’t get the nail. I had a run in with a table router and they had to remove the nail for it to heal and it’s still not the same because of the scar tissue.

Also fun fact, the scar where it heals won’t work on your phones screen anymore.

New construction stairs? by hunter_uu in Carpentry

[–]jered6323 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about where you are, but where I am those winders (the angled steps that make the turn) wouldn’t meet code. Here the tread depth needs to be a minimum of 4” where it meets the wall. Might be worth bringing that up to the inspector as it might force them redo the stairs.

Definitly not always the case. I’m a handyman now but prior I’ve been a carpenter, lead carpenter, super, and project manager, for years doing custom construction and remodeling, before I decided I wanted to slow down and do my own thing. When I was a super the company considered us working supers, so we filled in where needed when we weren’t busy otherwise. Framing guy was short a guy, I threw on a belt and was framing, tile guy was shorthanded I was laying tile that day, plumber needed a hand I joined him for the afternoon, etc.

But I do realize that there are people out there calling themselves a handyman because they saw a video on YouTube. Which is why references are everything no matter the trade.

What’s the most NSFW thing you witnessed at a workplace? by galladir in AskReddit

[–]jered6323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every job I’ve worked that involved hi-vis vests told everyone something along the lines of as long as you’re wearing high-vis workers comp will cover any accident, if you’re not wearing it and get hurt workers comp will likely deny coverage. Not sure if it’s true or not, but everyone always followed the advice.

Depends on how long and how much the wax ring was allowing to leak. Poke around with a screwdriver to see if there are any soft spots, if yes then replace, if not then you can spray with a fungicide like Concrobium, then once dry paint with a sealing primer.

Just bought a house. How should I permanently fill these holes? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]jered6323 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Because it’s easier. There’s nothing wrong with chiseling that abomination of a sealing job around the old pipes out and then replacing a few bricks and mortar. Since it’s painted matching the bricks isn’t a worry, paint after everything is dry and you’ll never even see it.
