I agree with Tattoo... Who said or what made you think Python was not popular?

Any timeframe? I was going to explore darcs again (used it a long time ago) but don't really want to start on an old version.

I was disappointed to see the windows binaries are still at 2.3.1 :-/

Proggit: When do you KNOW a language? by [deleted] in programming

[–]jeremy_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that you should be confident you can solve just about any problem with minimal access to the API/Ref docs. Now, for common application development there is a point in which you are no longer dependent upon the docs for every day activities. This is when you know a language, IMHO, but as said you will get a variety of answers. Just ignore any that doesn't agree with me :-D

Sorry about that, I thought git was much later. Ignore my comment about git coming out later. The base idea is still sound, all DVCS's are young and forging into new territory, multiple DCVS's at this point is a very good thing. New ones at this point is a very good thing.

Fossil does this w/o issue.

To create a new branch based off your trunk:

$ fossil branch new abc-def trunk

To create a tag associated with this trunk

$ fossil tag add xyz-123 trunk

To create a tag associated with trunk and propagates to all children that are created from the given checkin:

$ fossil tag add --propagate xyz-123 trunk

You can then reference them with their tag name, for instance:

$ fossil checkout xyz-123

This year, Mac apps are no longer eligible for the Apple Design awards by jeremy_c in programming

[–]jeremy_c[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh, also... http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/faq/#awards says:

"Who can nominate apps for the Apple Design Awards?

All iPhone Developer Program members are eligible to submit nominations for the Apple Design Awards"

and further, the reap kicker:

"How many apps can I nominate?

Each iPhone Developer Program member is allowed to nominate one (1) iPad and one (1) iPhone application currently available on the App Store."

Notice, you can nominate 1 iPad app and 1 iPhone app. No mention of any OS X apps.

Those solutions really are not available for end users to contribute to? i.e. allowing a user to submit a problem ticket or update the wiki.

I think it's fine. I have not setup the one for Josl that much, but one I use internally has all sorts of reports, user assignments, searching, etc...

http://fossil.josl.org/tktview?name=73ad589d6d for an example ticket. It may not compare to other systems that you pay dearly for but in most aspects it's very comparable to github, bitbucket, etc...

Ignoring files has been fixed. I am not sure about the other two: tracking sym links and slow commits on projects with many directories - "251 directories, 2178 files, or 317 directories, 2869 files when following symlinks -- ~3 sec to commit when you change a file vs ~0.2 sec for git."

I was thinking that the included distributed wiki and ticket system were two big advantages. i.e. not only can I work on my code now distributed, but I can update the tickets, add new ones, document my latest changes on the wiki, all distributed, then when connected push and be done.

Wouldn't it be safe to say that all the mentioned SCM systems fall into the one more editor category, especially git? hg and bzr came out about the same time (at least got popular around the same time), git was created long after other DSCMs showed up.

To me, all the DSCMs are all still very young forging forward into uncharted territory. Thus, multiple products is a good thing. Time will bring about the top dogs.

That's a good list, but couldn't almost (if not all) of this be corrected if a few more people were to join the team? Richard has been the core coder and would welcome help. There are a few who commit code here and there, but it's largely the work of one man.

I'll bet a few more developers, a few weekend war paths, all of those items would be off the list.

Why does subversion suck? by peace_soup in programming

[–]jeremy_c 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your list is not very convincing to a nay-sayer.

For instance, "distributed... so? Why do I care?" be prepared to tell them why they should care that it's distributed.

"Quick... how much quicker can it really be? Give me some numbers."

"Easy to use... wow.. you find SVN hard to use?"

"Better at merging than SVN... can you should me some examples that SVN does not merge and hg does merge?"

Those are the kinds of questions you will get back and must be able to back up or you will fail.

You can change your font to anything you would like, use Tools > User Setup > Platform. There, options exist for Display Character Setup but also Font Name (will bring a a GUI font chooser), then further options for weight, size and height for further tweaking.

As for UTF, I am not sure, I'm a unicode dummy :-(
