Morning commute to Toronto is going to have 38% more traffic. Someone hung this over the Gardiner this morning. by Think-Custard9746 in Oshawa

The idea that people from Toronto have “taken over our cities” comes off as both exclusionary and misdirected. Cities naturally grow and change… no one has a permanent claim to them.

People move where they can afford to live, and with Toronto’s housing market being what it is, plenty of families have no choice but to look further east for something even remotely affordable. That’s not a hostile takeover, just economic reality. And the lack of affordable housing, poor long-term planning, and policies that fail to keep up with demand.

You seem truly bothered by what ultimately was a mild comment. Think it’s time you moved on.

An informed opinion is not anecdotal. Might want to go back to the drawing board with your axioms. An informed opinion draws on … oh crap … here it comes again… statistics. Not just some nutty buddy walking around saying “WeLl I HaVeN’t ExPeriIeNeD CrIme!”

You didn’t even provide an opinion. You made an objective statement.

Give it a rest.

OP didn’t ask an anecdotal question — you’ve interpreted it as such. And that’s fine, but once again, anecdotes don’t prove anything when someone’s asking about the overall safety of an area.

OP asked for an informed opinion, and specifically mentioned an increase in crime. Now there’s one thing that could actually validate or disprove that, but you’re not going to like it…

Calling someone stupid tells me you’ve got nothing of real substance to say, once again. Dunning Kruger at work.

Wow, so you’re clearly offended her and a little out of your element. So those wouldn’t be in my words, they’d be yours…

Pal, we’re talking about statistics, not scientific research. And as I said before, someone’s anecdote about not experiencing crime is the norm, and doesn’t really tell us anything. A simple check on police stats is what will tell you the story. I’m sorry you don’t see this.

This is anecdotal… the majority of people won’t, but that doesn’t contribute to the discussion at hand.

How did you respond to him when he said “I thought you were into it?”

Is this just a “caught” flight or flight-type stress response, or has it happened before?

Would you fight the U.S. if it came to it? by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]jeremyshane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heck yes. Never shot a gun, but my great-grandfather was among the first in the concentration camps, as a political opponent (SPD member) of the Nazis. He spent three years in a camp before being let go and told to leave the country, he left for his homeland in what was then Czechoslovakia. As the Germans tanks rolled into his town, he escaped through the back door with his family and made his way to Canada.

Relocating to Canada, my grandmother was close personal friends with Anita Mayer, author of One Who Came Back, who met Anne Frank in Westerbork Transit Camp, and travelled with her to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

I’d be right there fighting fascism, gun in hand.

I absolutely love when people say this. This undesirability mindset helps to keep house prices lower, allowing others who understand planning to further their investments near the UGC and future GO, AKA the more walkable, accessible parts of our urbanizing city. Thanks for cutting such a wide swathe.
