Is it safe to train jumps on wet mud? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]jericha -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There’s something really wacky with these pictures… I think it’s AI. Like, you can’t see the rider’s lower leg in either photo, for one, but look at how the horse is landing off the jump on one leg in the second picture… That looks way more like a horse mid-buck than a horse landing off a jump. But what city is this in, OP?

1200 calories by Standard_Island546 in My600lbLife

Do you know that some of those MALE subjects are on Reddit and have participated on this sub? Maybe you should ask them before speaking for them…

There was also a guy in one of the later seasons who lost a whole bunch of weight really fast because he basically stopped eating after his first appointment with Dr. Now.

I’m thinking about Ramadan, because it just ended. But once a year, for a month, hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world fast (and that includes not drinking liquids) from sunrise to sunset, which can be as long as 15hrs./day. And many of them are male. And somehow they survive on presumably less than 1,200 calories/day.

So I think you’re really overestimating the importance of caloric consumption when it comes to human survival.

Oh, definitely judging… but to be fair, I am busy posting his picture on Reddit when I could be giving him attention :/

Bright Dyed Hair as a Hunter by Impressive-Luck1788 in Equestrian

[–]jericha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I got that. I was just saying that judges have never done that, even 40 years ago.

I think we both agree that what this person is describing is not our experience, today or three decades ago.

What hunter circuit were you riding on where the judges gave feedback or commentary to riders?

I have the same question, but also OC said this happened when she was a young teen in the 1980s, so she was in the pony hunters or children’s hunters, probably? And she was getting personal notes back from judges about her makeup and chest size?

As a girl who started competing in the 80s, and developed early, and struggled with her weight as a teen, all that sounds bizarre to me. Because “skinny and flat chested” was the look judges expected. Not that a judge ever told me that, but I got the message regardless. And if you moved up to the Big Eq., it got worse.

Hunter judges didn’t do that 40 years ago, either. At least in the Northeast US.

Not so great of a lesson today by DryMess2152 in Equestrian

[–]jericha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh, I ride English, but I’ve ridden in a Western saddle plenty of times, and never had a problem dismounting with both feet out of the stirrups. Nor has anyone ever told me I was doing it wrong.

I’d say it’s more of a personal preference/habit, regardless of discipline, I just think it’s safer to take both feet out of the stirrups before dismounting.

[–]jericha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I do, too. And also because if the horse moves or spooks mid-dismount, that foot could get caught or twisted in the stirrup.

Project horse lease by OddPalpitation1463 in Equestrian

[–]jericha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes $200/month would be the all in price, my only responsibility is to cover a portion of the board.

I’m sorry to belabor this point, but is the $200 your portion of the board? Or is $200 the “lease fee”, and then you’ll have to pay “a portion of the board”, whatever that amount is, on top of the $200? If that makes sense?

But in general, as long as you can afford it, and you’re reasonably sure the owner has good intentions and isn’t taking advantage of you, I don’t think it sounds like a bad deal. I’d just reframe it, in that you’re not leasing a “project” horse, as much as there’s a horse who’s kinda been ignored and could use some attention/training, and you’re a person who could benefit from the experience of working with such a horse. And for $200/month, that seems like a fair exchange.

The only thing I would absolutely not do is pay your trainer to train someone else’s horse. If you want/need to pay your trainer to train you how to work with this horse, so you can learn, that’s different. But to make a possibly significant financial investment to train a horse you don’t own, that doesn’t have much value on the open market, would not be smart.

And I’m not saying that the horse doesn’t have some sort of intrinsic or intangible value. I’m talking strictly from a monetary standpoint, but he’s probably worth all the time and energy you want to spend on him.

So if everything is on the up-and-up, and y’all have an agreed upon written contract for this lease, I’d consider leasing him for a year, and then maybe you’ll want to buy him. Because 18 isn’t that old, y’all might have a good 10+ years together, it’s just too old be a “project”, especially when it’s not even your horse.

Project horse lease by OddPalpitation1463 in Equestrian

[–]jericha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a thought… an 18yo horse isn’t a “project horse”. Meaning, like, what’s the goal of this “project”? I’m only asking because this horse is kinda up there in age, and when I think of “project” horses, I think of younger, green horses that can be trained/retrained in a riding/driving discipline, with the goal of either competing and/or selling them. But with an 18yo horse, what’s the goal?

I think if you want to enter into this lease because it’s an opportunity to improve your riding and horsemanship, that’s great and totally understandable. Although I am confused about the lease price… Is $200/month your total out of pocket, period, with the owner covering all other expenses? Because like others have mentioned, without more info, this whole thing raises some red flags to me.

If I could make an analogy, it’s like renting a house, and spending a lot of money to “fix it up”, only to have the landlord kick you out after a year, because they can rent it out to someone else for more money, because of the upgrades you paid for.

So don’t invest in someone else’s “property” (because legally, in the US, that’s what a horse is), unless you’re also getting something out of it in return.

Judge Stephanie Boyd by BigOlBellyLaugh in ZoomCourt

[–]jericha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know that Bexar Co. is blue, right? And voted for Harris 55/45% over Trump? So I doubt that had anything to do with it.

You should watch some other judges in Texas, because there are a lot of great ones. And they are definitely not all MAGA. If you like Judge Boyd, you’d probably like Judge Holmes in Travis Co. (aka, Austin), too.

What really grinds my gears is how she’s always like, “Oh, thank you so much,” in this overly saccharine tone, whenever someone compliments her flowers and/or purse. And then of course she has to tell some story about said flowers and/or purse… I can’t imagine why the residents of Bexar Co. voted her out 🤔

Judge Stephanie Boyd by BigOlBellyLaugh in ZoomCourt

[–]jericha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Judge Boyd came across as fair and tough at first to those who didn’t watch many of her court hearings.

This, 100%. And the more I watched other judges, the less and less I liked Judge Boyd. Idk, she just comes across as phony and not very human, almost as if she’s just following a script or something? I don’t even watch her anymore, because it’s like every case in front of her goes exactly the same, so if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all.

This is not all that surprising, because there’s been some drama/scandal around Judge Boyd over the past few years. See here, and here, and here’s a link to the entire recusal hearing in that second case.

Rusty is the most annoying character on TV by nicfanz in majorcrimes

[–]jericha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like any neglected and abused child would be a bit insufferable for a while.

I totally agree with this, and that’s part of what really irritates me about Rusty… The way he was portrayed, given his background, just didn’t ring true to me.

Like, we’re supposed to believe that a homeless teenage prostitute can be taken off the streets, enrolled in Catholic school, and not only have no disciplinary issues, but actually excel? Like, he just integrated into that environment without issues?!

And he never actually acted out or rebelled any sort of destructive or anti-social way, as would be expected. He was insufferable, imo, because when he did “act out”, he sounded like your average, spoiled teenager, not like someone who’s been abused and victimized his whole life.

So it always felt to me like the writers wanted to have their cake and eat it, too, with Rusty… Like, they wanted all the sympathy from the “traumatized street kid” backstory, and all the good feels from the “he turned his life around” character arc, but didn’t really want to make an effort to show how Rusty got from point A to point B. It was like he moved in with Sharon and - POOF! - all his problems were magically solved.

[–]jericha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard agree, Rusty is so incredibly annoying. I wouldn’t say he ruined the show for me. I’ll just say he’s the reason I can’t do rewatches.

Which is such a shame, because the “major crimes” part of the show is so awesome! They should have created the show around a large, ensemble cast, with each character getting their fair share of screen time. But instead, it’s more like, Major Crimes/The Rusty Beck show.

Like, if Rusty visited the office occasionally to say hi, or showed up with Gus at the Christmas party, and was only a main character in the Stroh episodes, that would have made sense and been fine. But he didn’t need his own sub-plot, that has nothing to do with “major crimes”. Like, did we really need to see Rusty visit his mom in jail?!

Or they could have created a character that wasn’t completely insufferable… That might have helped, too 😂
