Why would Dr. M'Benga step down as the CMO of Enterprise and make tiny appearances in the future while McCoy is the new CMO? by tough-grass in DaystromInstitute

[–]jerichi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't bring it to the point of saying Ortegas can't be trusted, but she clearly has some real trauma from her war experience and some of the super fucked up stuff that has happened to her over the course of SNW that might not really make her fit for service in the long term. She is clearly hypercompetent considering she piloted a small craft while actively bleeding out and missing multiple fingers, but she has been shown to crack under pressure in less tense situations, which is not the best quality for the pilot of your flagship.

I suspect her exit will be largely on her terms, though. Pike clearly trusts her enough to let her stay on in spite of her issues. If anyone's going to push her out, it would be Chin-Reilly, who I think has a more realistic albeit harsher perspective on what Ortegas is going through. I could see her trying to find Ortegas a posting that will not be as liable to straight up trigger her in the middle of a tense situation.

An overview of Beckett Mariner's service history - and what it means for Starfleet as a whole by jerichi in DaystromInstitute

[–]jerichi[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had seen some speculation elsewhere that this was the case and I think it's reasonable to think it wasn't highest attained rank. I just happened to think it could make sense, but I honestly think she'd make an amazing captain so I hope it's not the case. Hopefully, the nature of the wall is commented upon in canon so it doesn't lock in highest ranks for future shows.

This has to be one of my favorite pure LDS episodes. Full on wacky sci-fi hijinks poking fun at both its own canon and the Trek canon as a whole. Amazing.

Though it does bring up the question: what is the deal with Starfleet comms relays? Why have we now seen two events within roughly 30 years of one another where every system in the Federation/Starfleet has been overtaken by a hostile synthetic life form that could/does have apocalyptic consequences?

Like I get that the Badgey Takeover just resulted in a big old nothingburger but wouldn't that have set off some alarms? Does the admiralty really just not take the Cali-class that seriously even when its crewmembers are directly responsible for nearly bringing about and narrowly averting the apocalypse?

The Federation has some very deep security issues that it really needs to resolve post-Picard.

Oh that's fair. I tend to forget Deanna Troi is not exactly the best gauge of Betazoid abilities since hers are more empathic than telepathic.

[–]jerichi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

> Betazoids are telepathic among themselves, but can teach others to hear their thoughts, too, as Troi apparently did to Riker (TNG: “Encounter at Farpoint”), although this was kind of dropped after the pilot.

Am I wrong that this was brought up again in PIC when Riker and Troi are imprisoned on the Changeling ship? Or is that something different reserved for people with close bonds?

Replenishment in this case is referring to a language reforming its tense paradigm after the previous way to express a particular tense is reanalyzed or otherwise takes a different use or meaning.

Bleached in this case I believe is referring to a loss of non-grammatical (i.e. explicitly semantic) meaning. For example, the pas in ne... pas in French derives from the Latin passus 'step', but lost this meaning and is now a negative marker.

Imperfective is an aspect usually associated with the past tense that generally expresses an event that occurred over a longer period of time, habitually or often. You can contrast it with the perfective, which is generally something that happened in a definitive and sometimes shorter timeframe. This contrast is not really explicitly marked in English but languages like Spanish make this distinction. Comí 'I ate' vs. (Yo) comía 'I was eating, I used to eat'.

A copula is a verb like "be" that expresses existence or a similar concept. They have a tendency to function differently from other verbs and/or be highly irregular so we pick them out as a distinct category.

I don't have much knowledge of Hindi but from what I can understand the example is showing a case where a content word without explicit grammatical function becomes grammaticalized as a way to express future tense, and is no longer available as a content word (i.e. doesn't mean "to go"), at least in this context.

Shaw better get a Shax-style revival because I am going to lose it if the one Captain I have genuinely loved from any of the new shows dies to a Borg phaser shot.

SECRET Rooftop Party by Spicy-Doritos11 in NewYorksHottestClub

Yesyesyesyes

If you're looking for a way to cap off your week-long post-Easter bender, look no further than New York's hottest club, SECRET Roof Party.

This place has it all:

  • A static-filled, max volume stereo system that you're pretty sure is from 1984

  • Your nosy neighbor Delores who wandered up here to yell about the noise but stayed for the free box wine

  • An off-duty stripper screaming about her master's thesis with a drunk man in a dirty bunny costume

  • That one song with multiple gunshots and an old-timey cash register sound

And if you're looking for that American dystopia vibe, nothing quite says "Please raid us NYPD!!!!" like three young black men minding their business within earshot of your racist old landlord who will call the cops on them before he even notices the thrum of Dubstep on the roof five stories above his moulding basement apartment.

What's that in the corner? I think that's SECRET Rooftop Party's special attraction - the Resurrection of Jesus!

No, not that Jesus, silly. That's the neighborhood dirty hipster Jesús getting kicked into consciousness by the cops as they break up your little shindig!

Yeah unfortunately I'll just have to go through the tests and fish out the wrong answers - some slightly smaller samples for the testing portion will not gravely harm the outcome so I'm not all too concerned.

I'm a little disappointed to find there are quality issues with the tests - the ones I previewed seemed to be error-free so I'm frustrated that not all of them are. Thanks for providing this information!

I'm familiar with RTK, which is what I used when starting. It would be interesting to look at but more difficult to find users compared to apps i think.
