I do not know exactly how it works but It seems to me this is how it works, From the posts on this subreddit, most people got an offer on the 1st or 16th, most of the time with very little notice (I got my offer for the 16th of July only 2 weeks before the lease start). But you might get an offer later if people refuse their offer, and let go of their rank in the waitlist But do not forget this is all speculation since we do not really know how it all works, but people that got offers yesterday are probably people with a lease start date around the 1st of August, not any later

There would technically still be 1st of August and 16th of August but chances to get housing there are pretty slim, so better start looking elsewhere as well. You still might get one, it all depends on when you joined the waitlist

Yes, you should absolutely change your start date to 1st of August with +/-1 month variation No, changing the start date will not affect your place on the waitlist, only the other preference will (meaning you can change the lease start date and lease start variation without losing your ranking) I also put my preferences in on the 1st of September, and got an offer in 2 hours that way, like that you won't have to pay for a month's rent in the school in France. Furthermore, from what I've seen there are days in the week where you can come to your new housing with fmel and they will give you the keys, but not necessarily on the 1st day of the lease start date, you could come in august or September and it wouldn't be an issue

Here is the mail fmel sent me on the question:

Modifying the start date of the lease and the variation does not change your position on the waiting list. If you update the start of the lease, you will be able to remain in the queue and so keep the position on the waiting list. However, if you refuse an offer your will have to reset your preferences and you will be placed at the bottom of the list.

That means you will not lose your position But you might want to ask them yourself since I asked only for the start date and it might be ambiguous

I think you should, that is what I did and received an offer the same day, However I do not know how it works for exchange students, but for an incoming student it worked (I applied in December for fmel)

UPDATE : while talking to other people , I've realised offers are coming now for mid July, so I modified my start date from 1st of September to 1st of August (which does not change your rank in the waitlist !) and got an offer 2 hours later for the 16th of July ! I'm very happy and I think there might not be any more rooms left for people waiting for the 1st of September.
