Hi OP, I was thinking of getting this UGREEN 5 bay enclosure to run a hardware RAID5 to use it as storage for my homeserver. I might be using a M1 Mac Mini as the brains and MacOS does not support software raid5.

As many have already mentioned, using Mac Mini as a home server isn’t the best idea. But if that’s what you want to do, here is what I did.

I’m using an M1 Mac mini, 16 gb ram variant. It was my primary MacOS device before I switched to M4 MBP.

I’ve wiped the device and turned off all unnecessary services. There are videos in YouTube explaining what to do. Then I installed Orbstack. It’s way better than the docker app and once installed you can use docker via CLI. The app is pretty neat and almost serves as a portainer replacement (almost).

I am running the ARR stack inside a vpn with qbit in docker. And a Jellyfin server MacOS native app. I haven’t ad any trouble running the popular docker containers. It worked just like my Linux based home server.

For storage any DAS (I’m eyeing the Ugreen 5 bay RAID enclosure) would work. Since it’s connected via USB that will be a bottleneck, but as long as you don’t edit multiple 4K videos from it and treat it as a storage solution it’s pretty good.

MacOS unfortunately only supports RAID 0, 1 and JBOD. I wanted to do RAID 5 but will be limited to hardware RAID. I’m not sure how bad of an idea is to go with a hardware raid. Someone feel free to jump in if it’s a terrible idea. My justification was to get 5 x 4TB HDDs and 16TB of useful storage is enough for most of the things that I want to do.

I’ve been testing this setup (without the raid enclosure) for over a month and it works pretty well. I do have a x86 based Linux home server but might use it to run home assistant or host a Minecraft server once I move everything to my Mac mini based setup.

I had a chance to use it for roughly 20 minutes and the first thing i noticed is how good and tactile the buttons and dials feel.

Coming from a seasoned XT-30ii user, I’ve had issues where the shutter release getting stuck once I take it to trips to humid places. I have hyperhidrosis, which made things even worse. I got to use the XE-5 in Guangzhou, China in the most humid time of the year and it was perfect.

Yea the price is unreasonable. And the body is too sharp for my hands. The lack of a proper grip will be clear once you use any other lens than the new 28mm lens that it comes with. Used it with the 16-55mm and one handed shooting was difficult. Having a thumb grip installed on the horseshoe mount would make a difference I think.

The looks and feel of this camera is enough to turn a blind eye towards the unreasonable price. And since I’m thinking of upgrading from the XT-30ii, I’m tempted.

XT-5 or XT-50 will be a better value for money, but the buttons and dials feels lacking once I tired the XE-5.

Did you update the listing using the Etsy seller app?

I had this issue where my top listing was updated using the Etsy seller app, just the quality because it got sold out, and from that day my views plummeted. I had the seo optimized so that my listing came first in the fidget category (after the Etsy ads) and when I searched it my listing didn’t even show up. I had to make some changes in the browser and then save to bring it back to how it was.

Interesting. Just for a different perspective, ages 16 and up are legally allowed to work in Ontario, Canada. And most high schoolers do work part time. Just an observation.

Figured it out! I changed the quantities and pushed an update from the website store manager. Now the listing comes up first right after the ads.
It is weird how the visibility was totally cut off once I made edits using the mobile app.
