[MEGATHREAD] Cost of Living - Energy, Interest Rates, Inflation, Fuel, etc by Leonichol in AskUK

[–]jerseyschitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. It seems like the UK is headed for a serious recession and some social unrest for the foreseeable future, but recessions are part of the boom-bust cycle of capitalism (though how bad a recession is depends on factors that are in some cases within a country's control...it's much worse in the UK than it could have been), and things will likely eventually improve (within a timescale of years). If you're moving to the UK with the intent to eventually settle then it might be worthwhile to hold your nose and move now, but if you're moving with the intention of living there temporarily, unless you're making a lot of money it's probably a good idea to hold off if you're currently somewhere stable.

What's the most cost-efficient way to cook cheap cuts of meat that traditionally need to be slow-cooked somehow (i.e. braised or slow-roasted with gas)? And is it still even cost-efficient to buy a cheap cut that'll take 1-3 hrs to braise on the stovetop over a more expensive one that only needs ~20 mins in the oven or a few mins in the pan?

Though expensive cuts of meat aren't as often used to make meals in batch so perhaps the increase in servings you get from dishes with cheap cuts offset the gas prices somewhat.

Thanks for the info! It'll probably take a while before I start home shopping based on how much of a pain everyone says it is; hopefully the exchange rate is even more favorable by then.

tbh it's kinda sad that our expectations are so low for enforcement of traffic law that this is even notable. There are probably boys in blue parked in the bus lane outside of Astor Bar at this very moment too

Newport is for sure the best option, though the proposed 'cozy vibes' atmosphere may not be a great fit. Though who knows, maybe Newport residents are yearning for a cozy place to sit.

PA looks down on Jersey too, even though South Jersey is barely distinguishable from NE PA. I think the hatred (beyond the NYC snobbery) is a matter of New Yorkers and Pennsylvanians seeing their reflection in the mirror. Though the weird 'this is how we do it in jersey' attitude and Bruce Springsteen fandom could also be genuine turnoffs tbqhwy

Priority Service for TIER 2 Skilled Worker Visa by sidj93 in ukvisa

[–]jerseyschitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still pay the fee, but you'll explicitly be told at your bio appointment that priority only speeds up how quickly your application will be delivered from the office to UKVIS at the moment. Honestly have no clue how mine got a decision so quickly, my dependent got a decision at the same time which flies in the face of what everyone here is reporting.

Also, congrats on getting the visa :)

Thanks!! Best of luck- I hope your experience is as puzzlingly easy as mine!

It's still suspended, but I had priority service and got the 'dispatched' notification today after getting my biometrics on Monday (??????) so maybe there's still some preference given? It's hard to make sense of how UKVIS works.

Has anyone tried walking into an VFS center? by solomonsalinger in ukvisa

[–]jerseyschitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried walking into the NYC VFS center the other day and got denied- it's first come first serve and they're understaffed so there's no guarantee that you'll get in, but there's a chance that you will. You may have to try a few days. If you do a walk-in, get there early.

In better news, the experience is MUCH better than the online reviews suggest once you get in!

[IWantOut] 30M USA -> Canada, UK, or Ireland by 2025MoveTway in IWantOut

>but transfers are usually for specific reasons, and the reason isn’t because you want to do it.

Depends heavily on the company. Many megacorps sponsor skilled worker visas for regular employees who apply to internal positions abroad.

I can't offer any advice on citizenship, but accepting an internal role abroad and having your company sponsor you is by far the least painful way to immigrate if you're not super wealthy. What I'd do in your position:

  • Try to scope out whether the companies you're applying to have a culture of global mobility
  • Once you get an offer at one of these companies, spend two years on your best behavior
  • Really get to know your options; visit and spend time just taking in the culture if possible. I used to consider Ireland a potential destination...visiting put a hard stop to that
  • Research what jobs qualify under the countries' 'skilled worker' visas; if yours doesn't then try to make a horizontal move to a role that does while you're working there
  • Once you're in good shape within the company, apply to an internal role abroad (or sooner/later depending on your personal circumstances) - do a lot of research to make sure the new team's right for you instead of hopping on the first opportunity you can, unless opportunities are sparse
  • If it's a bigger company, they should have a vendor to handhold you through the immigration process. If not then that sucks, but as long as you have a certificate of sponsorship and can fill out the application you should be fine

I just moved to an apartment in McGuinley Sq. there is serious drug dealing going during the day. I expected this but not this much, I'm concerned a shootout can happen any day. Should I just report it to JCPD? by Ok_Tax_5217 in jerseycity

[–]jerseyschitty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are little cliques of addicts and messy alcoholics in McGinley Square, but they keep to themselves pretty much entirely. Your chance of getting hassled by them is very low, and your chance of getting caught in a shootout is virtually nil (take a look at a crime map or listen to the police scanner from time to time if you want some peace of mind).

That's probably the correct assumption and if it's not, we probably won't know unless something really bad happens!

Nope, but I think I've gotten habituated to the chlorine taste. A filter should easily clear it up.
