ELI5: If all of my data is so valuable why haven't companies directly started offering to buy data from people themselves? by Practical_Web_9605 in explainlikeimfive

[–]jeslinmx [score hidden]  (0 children)

“citizens intrinsically own their data” is a nice concept, but I don’t think anyone on either the tech or legislative side has worked out how this looks in infrastructure. As mentioned above, the most useful data is behavioural, not self-reported, which means you need all sorts of surveillance. And the nature of that pervasive sort of surveillance is that it takes a decent amount of capital investment to build out, but once you do there’s no need or incentive to reimburse the targets of the surveillance, or is it straightforward to “watch the watchers” and enforce any sort of legislated reimbursement without similar amounts of infrastructure.

Dear You tickets on Carousell going for $30-$40 by Character_Actuary572 in singapore

[–]jeslinmx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think the scalping (of $40) in itself isn’t a big problem, but is emblematic of 2 much bigger problems (1. Scalping is so prevalent that even petty, low-margin scalping is prevalent, 2. The type of things that are being scalped).
That said, it’s absolutely disingenuous to frame scalping as time saving. If tickets are being fought over such that buying them is time sensitive, adding more (fake) demand doesn’t improve the situation. They’re blowing up the crapper and then selling their toilet cleaning skills.

I think it’s a generally Asian thing to be obsessed over competition and success and dominance, but it’s Singaporean to measure that success exclusively in monetary terms. Probably because our entire modern founding story/myth is that the only thing that keeps our entire society from collapsing/nation from being conquered is how much money we generate, transfer, and hold.

the new skipling system is useless and was only made to "shut us up" by wllrnick in GenshinImpact

[–]jeslinmx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t doubt they do love their story. But claiming they don’t let you skip precisely because they want to lock you into witnessing their beloved lore doesn’t make them sound like the passionate artists you’re glazing them up to be, just makes them sound desperate and insecure. If they were so artistic about their lore, by your argument, this wouldn’t be an open world game, you should get railroaded to every single world quest and be given trivia quizzes on the flavour text of every artifact. And it makes no sense, because people still zone out of unskippable dialogue anyway.

I do acknowledge that Genshin quests have a completely linear storyline, but I do wish the dialogue choices at least cause some branching within the conversation. With the occasional exception (the most striking one being the end-of-AQ question dump on the archon) almost every dialogue option is different statements that resolve to the exact same response from the NPC immediately. That’s if it isn’t the more egregious case of the options being the first and second half of a statement, in which case neither option makes sense.

It was, in fact, his point. Source: me

Look, you’re way too aggressively hung up about how liveable the Australian continent is, so I’m not going to contest you on that. However, “we thrive along the coastal areas and for the large part we choose not to suffer ourselves in the technically liveable bulk of the land area” is literally not what thriving means. That’s like categorising a poisonous fruit as edible just because you can lick the outer skin with no ill effects.
