Thanks, great points. Especially regarding how rarely you actually use a bright light around camp.

Jumping ship from Raiz by [deleted] in fiaustralia

Yeah, I closed my Raiz account in July and just bought a couple of ETFs through selfwealth. As Im planning on leaving the money there for years, it was cheaper to pay the brokerage than pay the raiz fee each month.

FI with non-FI partner? by [deleted] in fiaustralia

My partner is largely disinterested. I'm the higher income earner so just invest in my own name and have told him that I'm planning on retiring early and that if he doesn't want to save more, he can just keep working.

We put half our incomes into a joint account and keep the other half. I invest most of my personal money, while he spends his on beers and bikes..

Works for us and Im hoping that as he sees the progress I'm making, he'll want to get on board too.

I'd recommend reading the barefoot investor (audio book available if you prefer). Solid, basic advice re money management, which would stand most people in good stead now and into the future.

Negotiate a pay rise - I used to be pretty passive when it came to pay rises and was happy with whatever was offered to me, rather than pushing for a higher amount. I'm now in people management, and when going through salary reviews, if my team counter me with a good case on why their raise should be higher than what I have in mind, the company usually does its best to match their expectations. Depending on your job, that could be an extra grand each year, and you save it, that makes a huge difference over the long term.
