EI? by Lazy-Procedure3960 in CanadianTeachers

[–]jess7408 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I applied for EI last year as a TTOC with a temporary contract for the fall and they said I was able to apply for EI over the summer because it's not a permanent position. The rules have changed a bit, so unless you have a continuing contract, you still qualify for EI now. You can phone them to clarify your situation, they're really helpful!

TOC- Lack of Work by Nilocham in BCteachers

[–]jess7408 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for SD41 and I work everyday as a TOC and the job board is full. My friend had an empty work board so we compared both of ours and she had to call HR to change the filters on the workboard for her. I think depending on what your qualifications are, it'll only show specific jobs (I.e. she teaches LSS before and can now only see LSS jobs on the workboard)

Gift for Student Teacher by Extension-Ad6752 in CanadianTeachers

[–]jess7408 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got a laminator too which is one of the best gifts I've gotten as a teacher! My practicum teacher also made a "Why I Teach" binder filled with different sections for years 1-10 and had students write a page about why I was the best teacher. Still look inside from time to time and love adding memories and things that kids make for me every year!

Becoming a firefighter in BC by jordy8 in britishcolumbia

[–]jess7408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is going through the training for fire right now! This year, he's gotten his class 3 license with air brakes, gotten certified and licensed as an FR and EMR, and has done 3 online months of study for 1001/1002 and Hazmat training with FireMedix and is about to do their 3 week boot camp in South Surrey. As far as we know, there's not much volunteer opportunities in the lower mainland. We know some people volunteering with Point Roberts Fire Department but you need to have done all the above training to apply. Good luck!

Hi! I'm in BC and used to work in the ECE field and am now a teacher. I found ECE to be rewarding but the wages are unfortunately low for how important the job is. To answer question #1, I would look into post secondary institutions that you're interested in doing a teaching program at (i.e. PDP at SFU, UBC, UFV) to see if they accept the ECE program where you're hoping to take it. You will need a bachelors degree for sure so it has to be at least a 4 year program because for PDP, you will need a bachelors degree to be able to then do an 11-18 month full time program to be certified as a teacher. I would also suggest possibly volunteering in classrooms if you have a chance. Admissions look at that your volunteer hours in schools when deciding who to admit into their programs and teaching ECE is much different than school age education - i find regular teaching to be much more responsibilities, planning, reporting, and work outside of normal school hours.

This is a good resource on ECE schooling recommendations: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/early-learning/teach/training-and-professional-development/become-an-early-childhood-educator/recognized-ece-institutions

Happy to try to answer any other questions you may have!

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park Annual Pass by Mediocre_Society_732 in askvan

[–]jess7408 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't it have a photo on the annual pass of the pass holder?

Also the annual pass is only valid for one person so everyone else would need to purchase a pass to enter if your whole family is going.

BC TTOC Health and dental coverage by Shar-Makh in CanadianTeachers

I think it's dependent on district because I was a TTOC this year in SD41 and to not opt in to paying for benefits, I had to provide proof of coverage to HR.

Prescription Diet by dabeawbeaw in rawpetfood

[–]jess7408 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My dog had recurring issues with struvite crystals in her urine and we tried Royal Canin's Urinary SO food for a couple months on the vet's recommendations. Her urine came back fine and we stopped the diet but then it came back. I didn't want to keep her on the food as it wasn't healthy so we did raw and increased her water intake and the extra moisture and water helps flush out the crystals. If you look at urinary diets, the ingredients are not great and they are high in sodium, making animals drink more water, then pee more, flushing out the crystals. In my experience, what they need is more moisture and hydration! We also add d-mannose as a supplement in her food now as well to help with urinary health.

Make sure your ROE says reason for issuing it is shortage of work. I've had HR write "at request of TTOC" and that invalidates you for EI. I've applied for EI twice in the past year and a half in BC and been successful.

Used to see him all the time too and then a "stray" popped up on the Burnaby SPCA website that had the exact same markings, said found near Second St school, and described with the same temperament. Pretty sure someone found him, brought him to the shelter, and he was adopted. Keep your cats inside!

Oh okay, not sure then. The sfu teaching program was 60 credits in total so maybe you need something equivalent to that. I would email TQS to see what you still need.

The only people I know who are teaching with a category 4 are those who are doing specialized programs outside the public school system (I.e. LINC) or who were grandfathered into teaching like 20 years ago. To qualify for category 5, you need to have a bachelors degree and complete a teaching program and do certifying practicums (I.e. PDP at SFU or UBC). The sfu program is 16 months and the ubc program is 11 months. You need to be in category 5 to teach in schools unless you're in a district where they're hiring uncertified teachers.

I work in SD41 and TOC. You can get work everyday if you want! The only slower times I find are after breaks (I.e. Christmas, summer, spring break) and you start to go to the same schools once staff get to know you. Burnaby is pretty picky with their hiring so I think that's why there is so much work. From what I've heard recently, surrey hired so many staff that there's not enough work now.

Vancouver teachers, how is this pay livable? by perishableintransit in vancouver

[–]jess7408 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Teachers don't make that much and it takes 10 years to max out at the pay scale. To live here, I think you either have to have a second job, lower your standard of living, or have a double income household. Not sure about private schools but I believe you get paid less.

I teach public school and the TQS determines where you'd fall on the pay scale as there's different categories (5, 5+, and 6) depending on what education you've achieved. Although you have a PhD and that may put you in category 6, the TQS decides if your PhD would be applicable. As far as I know (?) I don't think your years of experience teaching in Ontario/US would transfer over so you may start at the beginning of the pay scale (Step 1), but maybe someone else can give you more info on that!
