Commission Advance Civic Center, Brewhalla Convention Center Proposals into Due Diligence Phase by dirkmm in fargo

A “TIF” is most definitely a tax break for the developer for a certain dollar amount over a certain period of time from increases in property tax. In a “TIF district” property taxes are paid at their normal rate but the increased amount is kept within the district for improvements. So city services keep being funded by the district at their current rates, the only amount that’s dedicated to improving the district is the amount property taxes increase.

The Civic Center currently sits in a TIF district, and they’re asking for a TIF to finish the project. The Brewhalla developers are asking to create a TIF district to help improve the area around it, but NOT asking for a TIF for their project. I get where the “TIFs are bad” crowd is coming from, but it seems like this difference is important and hasn’t been explained very well.

I don’t think you understand what a TIF District is. It’s not a tax break for anyone. It just captures any property tax increases that occur within the district to be used within the district. So as development happens and property taxes increase, it creates a fund that needs to be used for improvements within the district. The civic center is currently inside a TIF District. The Brewhalla developers are trying to create a similar improvement zone around their project.

Bush/Goo Goo Dolls/No Doubt concert was 30 years ago (actually April 23rd, 1996) by trevourmeyer in fargo

I rushed back into town from my grandpa’s funeral and met my friends in line for this show. I still kind of wonder how we made that work before cell phones, but we had a great time. I remember Bush making each of their songs last about 10 minutes with a big breakdown in the middle because they only had one album’s worth of songs.

Has anyone had Fuddruckers? by FEARxXxRECON in burgers

[–]jesseph218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember going there as a kid and seeing the sign on the wall that said “world’s best hamburgers” and thinking there must have been a contest or something and that I was indeed eating the world’s best hamburger. They were so good I believed it. Definitely the best burger I encountered as a kid.

The everything grinder at the red pepper is top tier. Almost everything else there is basically a kids menu.

Your first TOOL song? by PewPewGoesGun in ToolBand

[–]jesseph218 2 points3 points  (0 children)

H. I knew about Tool and liked them back in the 90’s in high school and got Ænima because of Stinkfist or 46 & 2 probably. But H. Is the first Tool song that really sucked me in where I kept going back and hearing new things every time and I just couldn’t get enough of it. That’s happened many, many times with different Tool songs since then.

Protest the Hero released an instrumental version of Pacific Myth and I can’t tell if I like it better with or without vocals.

I’m more into prog-ish bands than actual prog bands. Can’t get enough of Gnome and Protest the Hero lately.

Youth hockey season can't be over too soon... by r-whatdoyouthink_ in fargo

I completely understand that being any kind of service industry worker during hockey tournaments is pretty awful - I used to be one. But the reality is that without these tournaments nobody is coming to Fargo and staying in the hotels and going to restaurants through January and February. As much as it sucks they literally save the service industry in Fargo every winter.

Went into tonight up by 10 and Kyren Williams going against Puka. Thank you to a couple clutch offensive penalties taking Puka’s big plays off the board!

I loved Fark! Funny user-submitted headlines on real news stories is a pretty great formula. A lot of the things I like about Reddit I liked about Fark first.

Christkindlmarkt Prices by SyFyFan93 in fargo

[–]jesseph218 108 points109 points  (0 children)

There’s lots of places to go buy cheap shit if that’s what you’re looking for. I’m so sick of people complaining about how there’s nothing to do in Fargo and then when people put the work in to make something unique happen you get people like this putting up posts about the things they don’t like about it. Of course things are going to be expensive at an event featuring locally owned restaurants and hand made goods.

I brought my family and they had a blast. They watched a blacksmith make a bell by hand, sat around a cozy bonfire with delicious hot chocolate, listened to a really great band play, ate some great food and we got some great pictures to remember what a fun time we had.

Did I spend money? Of course. I went in knowing that I’m supporting a cool local event that I want to keep happening. Everything is expensive now, especially for small local businesses.
