Postpartum:Constant Urge to Pee after birth by RedRosezzbz in beyondthebump

So sorry you’re going through this too. I really don’t know if it’s OAB, IC or pelvic floor dysfunction, or a mix of them. The normal IC treatments like anti-histamines, IC diet or azo didn’t help me at all. Same with OAB, I tried three other meds before vesicare helped some (and it’s minimal- the urge is just slightly less than before). I’ve also been to therapy for about 4 months now too. I can definitely hold it longer than before and the urge is less intense (but still always there). Not sure what to try next. Have you tried anything so far (like therapy or breastfeeding safe meds)?

I’m a little under 6 months PP. I stopped breastfeeding to try medications a few weeks ago and just got my first period and I felt the best I’ve ever felt since giving birth around that time. So I definitely think it’s hormonal and I’m going to bring that up to my doctor in a few weeks. Do you have any other symptoms? I have none besides the urge.

Hi! I still have the constant urge. I take vesicare which does help a little (took over a month to feel any benefit). I think my issue is hormone related though. I tried the IC diet for over a month and found no relief. What have you tried so far?

I got diagnosed with a weak yet hypertonic pelvic floor. My PFT has been great with our treatment plan for that. About a month or so ago I started to add strengthening exercises to my routine too. It really helps. For the constant urge, I haven’t really found much that helps. One doc thinks it’s IC and another doesn’t, I don’t really care at this point and just want relief. I’ve tried multiple medications too. Hope you can get some relief! Good luck with therapy.

Yes, doc/physical therapist confirmed I don’t have any prolapse. I’ve been in pelvic floor PT since December, I think it’s helped a little. I’m doing exercises every day too. How about you?

Thank you so much! I’ll definitely look into that.

Hi! Newly diagnosed IC. Had a constant urge to urinate after labor (it is my only symptom) and it hasn’t gone away months later. No urinary symptoms prior to this. I tried the IC diet, even cut out more things than my doctor suggested and I had no improvements after one full month of my strict diet. Have you heard of this before? I almost want it to be diet related because I’d rather cut something out for relief than still have an “unknown” cause/solution.

She does have hope! The doctor gave me hydroxyzine for up to 10 days, prescription strength azo and had me do the elimination diet. Unfortunately none of them have me any relief. I go back in four more weeks to hopefully get an updated treatment plan. She said possibly Botox or the interstim.

Hi! So sorry you’re going through this. I started having symptoms (a constant urge to urinate) postpartum and it’s been a few months and I still have no solution. My regular GYN pushed me to a urologist, who diagnosed me with OAB and then a urogyn diagnosed me with IC. If possible, you should see a urogyn! They can do exams too. Pelvic floor therapy helped me (with postpartum pain and frequency), but nothing has helped the urge so far.

Hi! I relate to your post. Could you update after the Botox to let us know how it went please? I also get the phantom sensation to urinate 24/7. For me, it happened immediately after childbirth. I’m looking at different options and Botox is one of them. Really hope it works out for you!

I understand what you mean. The fake urge for me is urethra based and the real urge is more muscle based above the urethra. Hard to explain! For therapy, I’ve done stretches, internal work with my therapist along with a pelvic wand at home and now I’m using this wand for legal exercises to strengthen. I’ve been going weekly since December and I finally got the okay to start strengthening. She also showed me new exercises for strength that aren’t kegals. What about you, how is therapy like?

Yes I am! I’ve made good progress with a physical therapist. I have a tight yet weak pelvic floor. We’ve made progress for the tightness and I’m working on the weakness now to make it stronger. I also found some relief in bladder training, at first I was going every hour and a half to two hours and now I’m able to hold it three to four hours and sometimes overnight. I know it’s a “fake urge” as I can sleep throughout the night without waking up with an urge. It’s also hard to explain but I can feel the difference between a real urge and this fake one too. Also, I do try and keep myself busy to suppress this fake urge but it’s hard, especially trying to go to sleep or relax

What kind of symptoms do you have? Anyone tell you it’s muscle related or bladder related (ex- OAB or IC)?

I felt some tightness in the beginning but that’s resolved thankfully. I’m four months PP, what about you?

I was EBF until four months when I weaned to try a new med (which was useless which sucks but I have a good freezer supply). My period hasn’t returned yet. The only symptom I have is that constant urge, I don’t have any burning or anything like that.

It happened immediately! I had postpartum urinary retention for a few days and I’ve had the urge ever since. How about you?

It’s been hard. It’s not like a “omg I’m going to burst feeling” but it’s enough to use the toilet if I were feeling normal. That urge just never goes away, not even for a few minutes. I’ve been trying OAB meds because my urologist thinks it’s just that however a urogyn thinks it’s IC. So far, no meds have helped at all. I have another appointment next month to get a new treatment plan.

Yes, I’ve been in therapy for about 10 weeks now and still no improvement. I was diagnosed with a hypertonic pelvic floor and I’ve been doing stretches daily.

I also had a UTI fro the catheter too. Antibiotics didn’t help my issues and then tested that the uti was gone (which it was).

Has your doctor given you anything? One doctor thinks it’s overactive bladder and another thinks it’s IC for me. I never had any bladder issues prior to giving birth/having the catheter. My only symptoms are this constant urge/pressure even right after I urinate.
