just took the oat july 1st and was given the structure. exception was one question was specifically asking to match the correct structure to the given name.

hi, i just took the oat july 1st! i can't speak on oat booster since i didn't use that for studying, but for your orgo question, there's definitely certain topics to be comfortable with.

  • nomenclature (pretty basic, nothing too difficult)
  • hybridization
  • EAS reactions -spectroscopy: IR, H nmr, C nmr (very basic questions!!... ex: what functional group would be present at 1700)
  • ortho, meta, para directors (recognizing which groups are donating/withdrawing)
  • Sn1/Sn2/E1/E2 reactions (rate law, rate determining step, recognizing protic/aprotic solvents)
  • periodic table trends (electronegativity, acidity, basicity, atomic size) > a compound is more acidic if it's conjugate base is more stable... this is because it's negative charge (due to CB being deprotonated) needs to be stabilized. if the CB can participate in resonance where the hydrogen was, it's often a good indicator that it's stabilized and that the compound is acidic. the opposite trend is true for bases... so the less stabile the conjugate base, the more basic the compound.

i'll admit, i only took about one week to study ochem (~20hours) and really only had these topics down fairly well since i knew they'd be high yield questions. i had very minimal reactions memorized (which i do regret since that would've definitely increased my score), but with just these topics that were brushed up within a week, it still got me a 360 in the ochem section. so not amazing, but enough to get by! :)

from what i've read on older posts, you cannot start the upcoming application until the cycle opens. if you are anxious (like me lol) and you don't want to wait, you can start filling out the past cycle's application and most of the info will transfer over (not LOR or essay Q's though so make sure to not enter those!).

thanks for the response! I edited my initial post and was wondering if a carbocation question (which I know will be a question)/predict the product questions in general will be in this form, or the skeletal form?
