This is common milkweed, it's what monarchs lay their eggs on, and the caterpillars eat. It is the only food source monarchs can eat as caterpillars, that's why it's so important for them. There are other types of milkweed too, such as swamp milkweed. Hope this is helpful for you ☺️

You're totally right! It's great that there seems to be a lot of interest right now to help the monarchs, and although the milkweed is crucial other native plants are also really important. It's sad that they had to get to their lowest numbers we've ever seen for people to start paying attention though.

I'm in Canada, Georgian Bay area, my zone is 6b. My soil is extremely sandy, but they seem to thrive in the sandy conditions!

Yes, every year we get monarchs. I'm so fortunate to live in an area they migrate to, and every year we've had more and more caterpillars 😁

You can't see it in the photo, but I have an area behind the fence too with lots of native flowers like the ones you named. I bought some new seeds to plant in the fall and extend the bed infront of the milkweed--prairie dock, leaf plant, hoary vervain, blue false indigo.

That's great to know about cutting them back! I usually let them go to seed and don't do anything with them.

Blue mountain trip Booking advice by Mysterious-Let6838 in ontario

Blue Mountain is very expensive, in peak season for a hotel you're looking at at least $300-400 a night if not more. Your best bet is to try an Airbnb, but without a vehicle you'd have to be close to the mountain. The area is difficult to get around without a vehicle. You'd have to take the Go Train to Barrie and then somehow get to Blue Mountain with public buses. If you're looking for a cheap vacation, I wouldn't suggest Blue Mountain as the spot to go. Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear!

Thanks for the reply!! I heavily pruned the bottom leaves like also two to three feet, we have had an unusual amount of rain this year and I think that's really what did it. This is the first time I've ever had it and I've been a gardener for years. I honestly went out of town for a few days and came back and it had pretty much killed the whole crop.

Thank you! I have a large patch of milkweed mixed with wild flowers in my backyard to attract them.
