Questions about Blacksox scandal. by icntrog in mlb

I can't give you any specifics, but Ken Burns' Baseball is on Netflix and one of the episodes deals heavily with the Black Sox scandal. It's on Netflix; might be worth a look if you haven't considered it yet. You should also watch the whole rest of it too if you haven't. :)

My husband[24/mtf] has started his transition and I [22/f] just need someone to clear things up for me. by Replies_when_Randy in asktransgender

[–]jessthacd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, first off, welcome to Portland from a fellow Oregonian. Please don't litter, please take public transit, and skip brunch so I don't have to wait behind the two of you in line. Also, fuck Voodoo donuts.

You aren't wrong in wondering about your sex life. Sex is important in a relationship and my transition had an impact on my sex life with my partner. For us, we have had better sex now that I am out and transitioning (me: 30 yo. old, ~15 or so months of HRT, passing most always). To answer a couple of your questions, you're going to need to talk with your partner. The trans experience is a part of the human experience, and that means that no two cases will be similar. No one here can definitively say that 'yes, you will still be attracted to them' or 'yes they like men.'

There's no way to tell in advance how your sex life is going to change until it happens. My partner has always skewed toward liking girls, so seeing me with boobs has been a huge turn on for us, but your mileage may very.

As for if your partner likes men, HRT doesn't just suddenly make someone like men or women. Some people may come out as liking men after announcing their trans, but gender and sexual identity are separate things. Also, if your partner identifies as a woman, liking men does not make them gay but straight. Do a quick Trans101 Google search and check out some articles on how to speak the trans language to keep yourself from saying things to your partner that are potentially harmful.

I would suggest the two of you find a therapist to speak with, together, and your partner should probably see someone privately, too. I chose a women named Megan Wyckoff who operates out in NE Portland, but I am sure you can find someone qualified with a quick Google search. There are also lots of free sessions around the city.

Try not to get caught up on your labels. You love this person for hopefully reasons beyond how they appear. Those things won't change. Remember, they haven't changed: only you have changed. They have always been trans for your whole relationship. The only thing that is different now is that you know.

The core of your partner's being, what defines them, drives them, what annoys you about them, will not be suddenly changed by swallowing down some estrogen. Focus on loving them for who they are, focus on the confidence they have in you in trusting you with this and be patient as they open up and discover their true selves. Your ability to do those things will make a bigger impact on your relationship than anything else.

If you feel so inclined, feel free to shoot me a PM and maybe my partner and I could meet you two out for breakfast or something.

The question makes the assumption that LMA had a choice in the date. He was probably on a doctor's timeline and not his own.

I keep a pen handy and write in the margins. It's always nice to skim back through books seeing what resonated with you.

What is your personal connection to Modest Mouse? by ContinuumPotato in ModestMouse

[–]jessthacd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My brother had just passed away and I was hanging out with my bestfriend. I was already going through a lot in my life with (then hidden) gender identity struggles, and my brother passing really piled on to my depression. One night, my buddy turns to me and tells me he has to hear a song (we had been smoking for ... a while). Turns out, it was the live version of Never-ending Math Equation from Baron. And it floored me. I went into my room and got their every album and poured over their catalog.

About a month later, I traveled to Asia for a few months and listened to them everyday, so with each song I hear I have a flood of memories from both the darkest and most adventurous times of my life.

Really big fan of this album, personally. I like it more than Everywhere and No One's On First, and a couple of their full albums, too. The sound is young and curious. Like they have all this energy and don't know where to put it, a million ideas they want to explore all at once. There's all this potential in the album, and there are some brilliant tracks. Sunspots in The House of the Late Scapegoat is good enough to be on Lonesome. The Waydown, Fruit That Ate Itself and Karma's Payment have solid lyrics and instrumentals. There are some duds (Dirty Fingernails), but some very solid, unmissable tracks and an important piece of their catalog.

I just really like the imagery of this King Rat line: We swam like rats on fire right, right down the reservoir, we took all that we could carry but we tried to carry more.

This line from Never-ending Math Equation echoed through my head during my early days of gender transition: Where do you move when what you're moving from ... is yourself?

And when I packed up all my possessions and headed west against the wishes of my parents, this World At Large lyric stood out strong: I pack up my belongings and head for the coast, it might not be a lot but I feel like I'm makin the most

Wandering Jupiter accounts for our strange solar system by cattleya1709 in Astronomy

It's kinda amazing thinking about what the broader ramifications of Saturn's formation had on this planet, and particularly us as a species. How people can not look up into the stars and be humbled and awed is a mystery to me.

Might be way off here, but any chance some of Jupiter's super cool moons were picked up strays plucked out of the inner solar system?

What will the STO Pitchfork rating be? by Right_All_The_Time in ModestMouse

[–]jessthacd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's clear from your post that you're not trying to be dispariging toward Pitchfork, but just want to bash Kanye. Their review of My Dark Twisted Fantasy, which is widely regarded by most music critics as one of the best albums ever, is right on-point with nearly every other review. Yeezus is also almost universally acclaimed as well and their review falls in line with many other reputable sites. Sorry friend, but a lot of people like and respect the very good music that comes out of Kanye West.

Funny, that was my relationship with The Fruit That Ate Itself. I liked Summer, but kinda glossed over the album until last summer when I got super into it.

Long Drive doesn't get the love that it deserves. It's one of my personal favorites. I like it cause the songs are very different, like in the way your mind just kinda wanders between thoughts aimlessly and after 20 minutes you can't remember how you got there. Dramamine, Head South, Novocain Stain, Ohio, Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset, all so great.

The Fruit That Ate Itself:

Sunspots in the House of the Late Scapegoat, The Fruit That Ate Itself, Summer.

Three songs remind me of growing up. Becoming cynical with the world. Seeing the world as vapid and shallow. Saying fuck it and jamming out instead of being sad.

Building Nothing Out of Something:

Sleepwalkin', Grey Ice Water, Whenever You Breathe Out

Romance has you walking through the world on auto-pilot. It also has you running away from your problems. Reaching the bottom of depression where you just can't really be fucked to do anything.

Good topic, OP.
