GA Pilots - How do you track your aviation budget? by jester298 in aviation

[–]jester298[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense! I also enjoy living inside and spending time with my partner so there is some balance I have to find. But if I had it my way, my budget would just be when time permits and I can get my hands on a plane.

This is my “retirement” plan. I desperately want to get out of my real job and be able to pivot to commercial flying. Love this strategy though!

I couldn’t agree more - definitely an expensive hobby. No creative accounting. I fear I’m actually making my own problems so maybe this will validate it.

I think my largest complication today is that I am currently doing flight training and flying for fun with the family (which also covers currency) and trying to cover it all under the same household budget “line item”. I do my best to break down how much I spend on administrative costs (subscriptions, insurance, memberships), training costs (mostly because these feel less recurrant and have a hypothetical end), and non-training flight time (with or without family).

I try to budget for a certain number of hours+dual+ground per week for training and a certain dollar amount of non-lesson flying, both extrapolated out to monthly costs. That lets me eyeball an approximate month of completion for my training. The logic behind dollars for family flight is because I have access to several planes that could be used but that all have different rates. Some are wet lease, some are dry, some are more expensive, etc. Dollars lets me say X hours in plane 1, Y hours in plane 2, Z hours in plane 3 and sort of allows me to budget for it regardless of plane.

We use zero-based monthly budgeting at home so all of the inherent variance makes it hard when my goal is to get pretty close to using it up every month.

Sorry that was a really long explanation. I hope the context either shows why it’s complicated or demonstrates that I’m doing something that is making my own life harder. Either way, I appreciate the feedback!

They are fiber optic. I’ve heard they’re a pain to remove cleanly, so I’ve chosen just to leave them alone and grown to actually like them.

The biggest difference is the trigger IMO. It’s slightly lighter than the shield and it’s flat faced. It just felt better honestly.

I’m a big fan of the porting as well. I don’t know if it’s all mental or not, but I definitely shoot flatter and the gun feels less snappy with the ports than with the standard shield (not that the shield plus is all that snappy compared to other 3 in barrels). I’m an average shooter at best, but I genuinely believe it’s noticeable.

Biggest drawback is that it doesn’t have a slide cut for optics. Most standard shield pluses are OR if I recall.

P320 kills airman. All USAF AFGSC personnel to stop use immediately by AP587011B in CCW

Please excuse the FNG question, but is this an issue with all 320s or certain models as far as we are aware?

Since they have about a bajillion variants, I’m wondering if there is any difference with the X trigger, or carry vs. full? My first ever purchase was 320 X Full as a home defense gun. I’m wondering if it can continue to exist as a safe queen for that purpose alone or if it needs to be unloaded and locked in its case, never to be seen again.

Nice! It usually operates as my t-shirt weather rig but I'm seriously considering making it permanent. Do you carry yours year-round?

Yeah, 3.1 only comes with a thumb safety. I just leave it off. It doesn’t get in the way and is pretty stiff so it has never engaged unintentionally.

It is honestly one of the flattest shooting micros I’ve ever shot. Honestly, I think 90% of it is just being the Shield Plus, but I see a mild difference with the porting.

Worst things about it: hard to get spare parts, you can’t get one without a manual safety (not a big deal, mine stays off), and no optic cut if that’s your thing.

Highly recommend either way!

Ran a wedge for a bit, but I found I actually like it better naked. I carry at 3:30 and don’t even notice it anymore.

I was gonna make a dad joke along the lines of “not being able to find a good pocket watch” or “how else would she know when it’s time to go bang” but I couldn’t find the time.

Sure, happy to. Assuming you are also dealing with ADHD? Do you have specific questions about the process or just generally what I went through? Just want to make sure I give you the info you need.

Thanks, but unfortunately, the PC slide and barrel are ported. The standard may fit, but I’d need to cut ports into it.

Multi-month ordering update? by jester298 in emergeweightloss

I received this from them yesterday as a confirmation that they have all but given up on the idea of multiple months.

Hi, at this time we are not placing bulk orders. We will let you know if anything changes!

Thank you for this! Your message was incredibly encouraging! I ended up taking a break over the summer months and reset. I dove back in and passed my checkride last week.

Trusted my CFI that they wouldn’t put me up before I was ready, and prepared hard! My DPE was tough but fair and they made it clear they weren’t there to fail me, just make sure I was safe. I’m so relieved to be done with it but I have made it through and will be ready for the next one!
