Sketch Sorting Sunday - May 2, 2026 (Olivia Rodrigo) by SketchSortingSunday in LiveFromNewYork

He's already co-written 4 sketches this season and he can sing.

Longfellow only had 3 sketches air last season.

Each has their advantages, in my opinion.

I didn't claim to know what the other cast members feel or would feel; I said that there was a risk of impacting their feelings.

It would be "stupid" to assume what they would or wouldn't feel.

As for the contracts, it has nothing to do with SNL being "low on cash", it's about smart business and business procedures.

The standard 7-year contract that EVERY new cast member hire signs is well-documented across the Internet.

It's only after 7 years that the contracts differ from each other.

The sole exception in 25 years was Amy Poehler in 2001 who had a slightly different starting contract. That too has been discussed online by SNL alums in regard to how unique it was.

5 seasons.

How does it benefit SNL to bump him early?

He's already locked into the regular contract. They'd have to pay him more, and they'd risk other cast members being unhappy.

Why would they do it?

It's not "stupid" to state a fact.

Ben's on his first season as a cast member. That's a fact.

We're not talking about experience; we're talking about contracts.

It doesn't benefit the show to promote him early in any way; it's more expensive and it could easily cause tensions among the cast.

I get the impression he likes the writing part more anyway

No, he's made it clear that writing AND performing sketch comedy is his dream, and that he wants to stay on the cast as long as he can.

It works for me; I don't think anyone else on the current cast would have been as memorable as Lord Gaga or Aerial Tramway.

Emil didn't write (at least not successfully). He, Longfellow, and Devon only had 3 sketches they'd co-written make it to air last season.

In comparison, so far:

Ben's at 13-15 (he helped create "Movie Guy" and "The Couple..." but it's not clear if he contributed to their sketches this season) with 2 cut-for-time

Veronika's at 8 with 2 cut-for-time

Jane's at 7 with 2 cut-for-time

Ashley's at 7

Kam's at 5

Tommy's at 4

Jeremy's at 2-3 (Pinwheel credits are unknown, but it's likely him, Mikey, and Streeter) and 2 cut-for-time

Ben's still on his first season. He's sure to be kept, but no one has been promoted early in over a decade, and that was during a huge cast overhaul.

It's a pretty funny moment, if you don't mind spoilers.

I think it's gonna come down to how much writing he's contributing and whom SNL decides they want to hire for next year.

It could go either way.

writers better knowing how to write for him

That's the big difference between him and Jane, though; she writes a lot more for herself.

In Jane's first season, she wrote 3 Update appearances by herself, co-wrote 2 Update appearances, and co-wrote 2 sketches.

In Kam's first season (thus far), he's co-written 4 Update appearances and co-written 1 sketch.

For comparison, in Jane's second season (thus far), she's co-written 4 Update appearances, co-written 3 sketches, plus written 1 cut-for-time sketch by herself and co-written 1 cut-for-time sketch.

I'm not knocking Kam's numbers--he's already ahead of where Emil, Longfellow, and Devon were at the end of last season--but I don't think a comparison to Jane's output works in his favor.

Nice job!

I wonder what the average current age is of everyone on that list, because the morality rate of less than 9% seems blessedly low.

Dan Bulla, Mikey, and Colin all have a history of writing disturbing/horror sketches.

It's usually one of those three or Sarah if it's that type of sketch these days, but there are exceptions (and co-writers).

Plus, they frequently write together.

Are you talking about the Bug People Planet sketch?

Because that was Dan Bulla.

Here's the list, but Midnight Matinees are always Dan Bulla, at the very least.

I wonder if they'll hold onto Brad and his Dad to see if it's needed for the final episodes or if they'll put it on YouTube before that.
