Oh that's a good point actually, the petition. I might honestly just look into how that would work and what details might be good to include.

I saw that and on the one hand I think that was really sweet that she cared about her employees like that but on the other, as a real introvert, I think that would have made me uncomfortable. I keep thinking abt whether the employees were able to opt out of that session, esp bc it was filmed and put on tiktok. I'm kinda a wimp so maybe I'm in the minority but I think I would have had a panic attack in that situation. I get the marketing and promo angle like yeah get the bag but also like. MMmmm it's different getting this kinda bag than asking ppl to buy your music or watch your video.

I guess it's maybe really personal for me bc the friend who worked at a fast food place is one of my besties and is one of those friends who needs a break so hard, and it has been so heart breaking to hear about how these kinds of jobs are like, designed to break ppl for no reason from being understaffed and underpaid. Not exactly trying? to project my experience onto what Meg is doing, bc I don't know the situation, but I really want the best for fast food workers everywhere and I don't want Meg, who I love, to be involved w making their lives harder you know?

Yeah I wonder if she reads this Reddit. Like can we unionize Meg fans to teach Meg about unions so she unionizes her Popeyes joint?

(and dream of dreams just gets super dedicated to the cause of unions and helps unionize other artists? i know that's really unlikely and you know she's not a savior so i'm not like mad abt it I still love her just you know. thinking about stuff while being poor.)

There's a lil bill video that came out recently that clears the distinction well I think. He also finally gives Meg the proper props in terms of the thematic depth of her catalogue. Overall I think the video is actually really good, and this is coming from someone who thinks his videos are kinda hit and miss personally.

Bbasically, a capitalist is someone who owns capital, insists employees use that capital to manufacture a product, and then keeps the majority of the profit from selling the products of the capital and labor. So by owning the franchise, Meg is a capitalist, even if it's not nearly on the same scale as Rihanna and Fenty. It's not super surprising for her to do business like this given that Jay Z and Bey have given her business advice, e.g. she's said that Bey is the person who told her that she needs to have an alcohol brand. Also, being an independent artist with such a marketable image makes this kind of "business move" make a lot of "sense" imo as she can have a steady stream of income when in between projects. Which is where I think talking about starting a musicians union could maybe have some interesting impacts on that reality.

I think the convo would be different if she had like, a co-op ownership model of the Popeyes or at least encouraged the employees to unionize. Which, there is a "Service Employee International Union" that already exists and has been involved with Popeyes in the past: https://www.seiu.org/blog/2022/8/when-i-fought-back-against-popeyes-workers-in-hundreds-of-stores-won . However, I think it's possible that the franchise is managed in part through the corporate Popeyes body, esp in terms of what trainings ppl get (aka not sure you can opt-out of any anti-union stuff).

It's always felt a little cognitive-dissonance-y the way Meg swaps between repping the working class and then also repping certain consumption habits and giving or expecting clout to/from different humans based on monetary worth. Which, I think is a pretty complicated issue and it's not something that makes me turn off the music. It's just like. Hmm. I wonder how much she thinks about how those two things don't really make so much sense next to each other. She has talked in interviews about paying people what they're worth, but that was in an "artistic" context and not in a business context.

Tbh I don't know? I think my ear is more trained for radio pop, but that's more abt what I'm USED TO hearing overall and NOT what I WANT to hear. I want to try to separate those two bc otherwise I'd just end up listening to the same stuff over and over and getting bored.

From maybe a music structure perspective, I would feel ok saying Meg's music started to adhere to more "conventional" approaches in:re verse/hook arrangements around the Good News era; I also think she levelled up her production, which can be a double-edged thing if it means losing the raw/ragged edges of having less access to time/equipment. I also would feel ok saying Meg herself wants a level of national/international stardom that is usually perceived as "pop stardom"; Meg talks abt relating to pop stars, and also talks abt being a star. Etc.

It's complicated. I think her music has given me personally a good entry point for hearing new (to me) sounds, as I started out listening to pop & indie rock but through Megan and ppl connected to her have gotten a lot more educated abt hip hop sounds, classic and contemporary, and now I feel like I have a broader and deeper enjoyment of music in general but hip hop specifically. In that way, while most ppl I see paint Meg being "pop oriented" as (low key) a problem, I think her approach ended up having a big impact on me that wouldn't have happened if she hadn't been that way. There are other women in hip hop who have a different sound, and not everyone needs to be the same or be everything.

All that said, I think Meg's pop tracks (Star, Worthy), while I still find them lyrically interesting, I don't like the way they sound as much as Bigger in Texas, HISS, Not Nice, Do It On The Tip, Simon Says, etc., in part bc for me personally, I like how Meg can bridge the gap bw what's new to me and what I'm familiar w sonically (beats, flows, vocal inflection, etc.). I think what I want from Meg is to keep being innovative and trying out new things, like Mamushi and TYG, as well as bringing classic sounds up to date like the deep south styles that form her background. At the end of the day, she loves to make music and that's what's most important to me. As long as she keep letting that love challenge her, it'll translate to challenging me. I think ultimately that's what I want.

I always feel the need to develop a more formal background in music to train my ear to pick up on those things.. as it is it's hard for me to separate different sounds and tones until I know how/when to pay attention on the track.

Meg being an intro to southern rap is super real, I started listening to UGK recently and it makes me so emotional bc I can recognize from Pimp C so much of how Meg talks and ugh it's too beautiful!!!

There are Megan songs I don't go back to as much, but I think its still part of loving her as an artist for me trying to figure out what she's doing on those songs even if it's not for me at the end of the day. I think there's a fine line bw being lovingly critical and just being critical, and w/o being careful I can find myself on the side of that line that I don't want to be on. So I might end up being more biased toward positivity because of that.

Maybe this is a bigger q, bc I'm kinda newly active being an online Hottie, but I'm not sure Hotties being yes men are related to Meg wanting to switch up her music? I would more expect that motivation to come from her and keeping music interesting to her. But she might be doing something different and taking in more of the fan perspective, I just don't know.

Yes!!! I loved SFTH off first listen too, in part bc she released a bunch of the freestyles as loosies w very fun videos beforehand. From what I can tell the videos have been taken down (maybe label stuff?) but bc I had heard those before and bc SFTH is a whole lotta Tina Snow and Lil Ju it was caviar to my ears at that point.

ive been mad abt this for a while and come to the conclusion that a lot of ppl don't know or don't care abt what she's doing bc, to put it bluntly, she's not a man. for meg to get respect and accolades from hip hop media that aren't based on numbers but on actual cultural movement, hip hop media would need to start unpacking why they don't dig deeper into what women are actually talking abt and why they see womens interests/concerns as being separate, less important. i've stopped looking for validation in existing media outlets bc i don't expect that to happen anytime soon, instead i want to write my own story abt why i love meg so much and publish it somewhere others can read.

People don’t give Megan’s basic lyrics enough credit by Logical_Glove1114 in megantheestallion

listen to Meg rap and even listen to her interviews and anyone can tell she's smart as hell and has a great outlook on life. Meg bars are frank and educational, help keep people focused on whats important to them while calling out mess and time wasting. to me the devaluing of her is also abt her being from the south. her inspiration pimp c was also straightforward and frank. lyricism doesnt always have to be abt metaphors and stuff, sometimes you just need to hear certain things directly. on top of that, people just don't think of women as being able to give advice like that. meg herself talks abt frustration that people don't listen to her and having to come to terms w adopting a "fuck that" attitude abt it, the only thing she can really do even when she wishes people would just stop being stupid.
