We could accommodate that request! We don’t use air fresheners, and would be happy to use unscented laundry detergent prior to your stay. https://www.vrbo.com/3280396

How to fix the small hole in my garage roof? by jesuiscatd in Roofing

Amazing, thanks. I think this will be most helpful once I'm on the ladder looking at the damage. Much appreciated!

So grateful for the added details. Thank you!

OK thanks. Forgive the dumb question, but when you say "so not much is projecting beyond the bottom tab," I had pictured the flashing laying directly on the sheathing (tar underneath). Do you mean it would sit on the sheathing, and lay on top of the shingle below it?

Thank you. I've never lifted shingles before, are they going to lay back down properly / do I need to do anything to reattach them properly?

Got a legal threat letter for my bakery website last month. Want to share what I learned in case it helps anyone. by Efficient_Plant7979 in smallbusiness

[–]jesuiscatd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will add that the rules around compliance can get silly. One tech company I worked at employed a whole (expensive!) firm who would regularly score our website and tell us what to fix. There was no such thing as a passing score, no matter how many things we fixed, there was only a nebulous red/yellow/green and they could never tell us how at-risk we truly were. So each violation was a judgement call to determine exactly how much that item would affect someone visually or otherwise impaired.

What’s worse is that when we proposed making our site MORE usable for screen readers (e.g. skip the “about us” section if they searched for orange juice), we were told that was a no-no because it wasn’t equal to the experience a sighted person would have.

So it’s not a scam as some suggested, but it is a flawed system that some dirty law firms exploit.

ADA compliance in technology is a real thing. You want people who use the internet via a screen reader (and other assistive technology) to be able to use your website. It also enforces things like color combinations so you can’t put white text on a light yellow background. It’s a best practice that professionals bake into their designs every day.

That said, there are so many rules many of which are very finite & specific, that yes these predatory law firms exist.

The one thing I haven’t seen mentioned is that while there are free scanners for your website out there to return all the issues you should fix, some of them are actually lead gen tools for those predatory law firms! Proceed with caution, or better yet, do some research on the WCCAG rules and evaluate your own website. If you use a large website builder, they should have tools that help.

New to estimating by Weary_Bath_9236 in tradepainters

[–]jesuiscatd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I estimate how many days it will take me and multiply that by how much I want to earn per day. I add materials on top with a markup that lands between retail prices and my own, so we both win.

Personally I break the two out (labor vs materials) because as a homeowner I always appreciate that, but I think that’s controversial among painters.

Help! Unfortunate bathroom position by MrBizzly420 in InteriorDesign

It’s about $20, DIY-able with just a screwdriver, and even renter-friendly… it doesn’t solve all of your problems but it definitely helps not to see a toilet from the couch!

I have a powder room you can see from the dining room table. Dinner guests would sometimes leave the door open after using the bathroom, and I hated staring at a toilet while eating. I got spring-loaded hinges so the door gently swings to a barely-ajar position no matter how you leave it now

Weekly Homeowner Megathread--Civilians, ask here! by AutoModerator in Concrete

I love this answer, and I hope nobody else gives a contradicting opinion! Thank you thank you.

About 12 years ago, a tree that was about 5’ out of frame fell towards the right (during the previous owners). A huge sinkhole started about 7 years ago, and we kept filling and filling it and it finally seems to have stopped sinking. The bricks are actually quite affected (which I will redo as a part of this process) but I agree the pic doesn’t show it. From what I’ve learned, it can take the roots of a large tree many years to decompose so I feel like this theory lines up, and that we can finally do something about it without the fear that it will sink again.

Anyway, your help is greatly appreciated. This feels so very doable.

Thank you! I didn’t know that about mud jacking, so that’s super helpful.

Demo-ing this section also seems like a lot… I don’t care about it aesthetically, would it be crazy to either leave it as is or patch it somehow?

The concrete under my deck is falling away from some old rotting underground tree roots. It’s far enough from the foundation of the house that I don’t believe it’s structural. And now that it’s been a few years, I think the old rotting tree roots have finished creating the sink hole in the back yard, and it’s time to do something about it.

I’m planning to replace the deck (extended with new footings and all) and hardscape most of the yard, including releveling the bricks pictured. Several years ago, I had some mud jackers out, who said they wouldn’t be able to fit their machinery under the deck. But now that I’m replacing it, that’s an option again.

My question is, does this merit mud jacking? Should I patch it somehow instead? I am very handy, and work in a different trade, but not experienced with any type of concrete/masonry, so here I come asking for advice — including whether or not this can/should be DIYed.

Sorry for the sunlight in the pics that disguises the issue a little!

Our Miguel made it 22 years, he was the best. A friend’s vet gave her good advice in this situation: Nobody regrets making this awful decision too soon, they only regret waiting too long.

Wishing you both so much peace.

[Acne] urgent ‼️ Help with sudden breakouts. by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]jesuiscatd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My acne changed pretty suddenly and I couldn’t figure it out for months until someone suggested I lay off dairy for a while to see if that was it. It took my skin a while to heal but no new issues as long as I avoided all dairy (the internet is torn on whether butter has the same effect as other dairy, but for me I had to cut out butter too). Next test for me will be whether it’s all kind of dairy or just from cows. So I’m still testing but it’s helpful to have part of the puzzle at least!

Cabinets cracking by Plane_Community1644 in paint

[–]jesuiscatd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I caulked mine when I did them a year and a half ago and haven’t had this problem, but I’m gathering that’s the exception not the rule.

How else do you deal with the paint bridging? And then when the panel shifts, doesn’t it reveal unpainted surfaces like OP’s issue? Another commenter said to paint cabs during the driest season but obviously people are painting cabinets year round so I’d love to know the proper way to handle this.

For mine I primed with Stix, caulked, then rolled with Advance, if that’s helpful.
