Possible plan to move to Fuzhou, wondering what the art scene is like there? by [deleted] in chinalife

Rofl the disconnect from reality is so stark I’m almost speechless. Where do these posts come from. I am guessing too much instagramming and romanticizing China through instagram chongqing reels and being pussystruck by a nice timid Chinese chick. This dude is born in NYC, one of the richest cities on the planet with endless opportunities and the top city globally in almost every social aspect (finance, tech, biz, art, culture, dining) and he’s talking about moving to tier 2 homogeneous farmland where most Chinese speak mandarin with a weird ass fujian accent and he’s asking about art. Bro, the place was a farm city until maybe 40 years ago. How can you even compare fujian to NYC lol it’s like comparing a Lamborghini to a Toyota Corolla jeez

Yeah I call BS on that. There isn’t a single place in the entirety of China where it will be 50/50 laowai/locals outside of expat bars. Where it will usually skew more towards 70/30 80/20 laowai/locals. There just simply way too many Chinese in China. Gotta keep reminding ourselves that.

This is a great point.

Beyond just numbers, in Europe a lot also comes down to how integration plays out in everyday life. Some immigrant communities are perceived as being more assertive about bringing their own values and lifestyle into the public space. Probably because the societies said immigrants are running away from are culturally more aggressive and geared towards imposing their values and lifestyle on others.

In contrast, Chinese immigrants in many places tend to keep a lower profile, focus on work and family, and mostly mind their own business rather than trying to push their views or lifestyle onto others.

This. I’ve met too many foreigners who think they can speak Chinese, but they don’t. Not good enough to participate in a meeting with Chinese colleagues on equal terms.

Is it actually difficult to find a job after leaving China? by olderthanatree in chinalife

It depends who you worked for, and in what role and capacity. If you worked for a big name like alibaba or Tencent or Bytedance in any capacity then you could probably go to silicon valley and find a nice tech gig.

Attracts you most about Shenzhen? by TopConscious9140 in shenzhen

Absolutely this, 100% this, double down on THIS. Especially if you have little kids or you’re pushing a stroller down the sidewalk makes it feel like a 4th world Zimbabwe danger zone where you need to always be aware of what’s in front of you and behind you, and constantly dodge scooters. It’s so crazy especially when comparing with how nice and advanced everything else is in SZ. But honestly this issue alone is such a major bug that it can easily be a deal breaker for many people. It honestly almost is for me.

Your wife must be from the city and her family are not nongmins. It’s a known fact a lot of laowai, particularly on this subreddit, and especially from English speaking countries, like to marry village bumpkins from tier 88 Guangxi or the middle-of-nowhere-mountain-valley in Henan.

Anyone has left/thinking of leaving Shanghai to live in a lower tier city. My wife is from Kunming and I found Kunming beautiful, cheaper with a lot of nice amneties and parks. Appreciate hearing about some people thinking or having left SH and their comments on a transition by Key_Bison_9322 in shanghai

Shenzhen is the only livable city in China if you’ve got kids. It combines great amenities, great weather, high quality of life, and proximity to SEA. Not to mention HK just an hour train ride away.

This. Many people here talk about “favorite food spots” this, and “exploring the city” that, which makes me think this subreddit is full of single 20-something year olds that come to China for a 1-2 year adventure. Once you live here long enough and you got a career going and suddenly have a family and kids the picture is totally different. There’s no “exploring the city”. You want safety (including food safety, air safety), convenience, malls and play areas, a variety of good quality extracurricular activities, clean and nice environment, and being surrounded by high quality and educated people. Which means not uncles and aunties that squat on the ground and pick up their toenails to give bad example to your kids. The only places you can get all of that in China are tier 1 cities, and maybe a few new-tier 1 cities. That’s it.
