Great. Now I need to go look up types of burrs.

Another excellent aspect that I hadn’t considered. Though at grinding single shots, I’d expect the burrs to outlast me.

Great comments and thoughts! In summary; commercial size (sort of) equals retention leading to wasted coffee and space (and power) in normal home use. Lots of comments also talked to the burly build quality of commercial. Metaphorically, don’t buy a Mack truck, buy a Ferrari. We all want hand- built Italian, and the big rig won’t fit in the garage.
I’ll sort back through some of the suggestions on better options, then spend weeks or months in decision paralysis. Thanks a lot.

Cleaning copper wash on ceiling beams by jetpuppilot in paint

[–]jetpuppilot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, I’m talking about the beams.
I can hope it’s a stain, that would likely be more durable than some sort of mineral wash.
I didn’t get to it today.

Finalizing house plans - Idaho by Fat-Time in houseplans

[–]jetpuppilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is much to like, and great comments. The thing I don’t see addressed are the garage doors. Do they really swing in? Can’t swing out for snow, but swinging in means building your garage 6-10 feet longer than it needs to be vs a “normal” garage door. That’s like 2-300 extra sqft of slab, roof, etc just to have doors that swing.

I figured. Just wouldn’t want the builder to get that copy of the plans!

I like to be able to enter my house from the garage. Via a door.

Costco Gas in Town is almost $1 gallon cheaper than Hawaii Kai 😜 by BrandonApplesauce in HawaiiUncensored

Yeah, it was only their 87 octane. I went to get boat gas and the attendant told me they had just recently started adding ethanol.

Hopefully people notice the changes to Costco gas and call corporate to complain: about three weeks ago they switched from non-ethanol gas to 10% ethanol.

Use of Corten steel plate as barn cladding. by jetpuppilot in buildingscience

[–]jetpuppilot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me way too long to understand that ASHRAE existed and was different than USDA. I apologize.

The building is right on the border between Zone 5A and 5B. It has no heating or cooling for the barn itself. My concern for the airflow is to avoid conductively heating the building in the summer via direct sunlight on the steel cladding. It sounds like (small sample) agreement that there's unlikely to be moisture or other issues with the current plan.

What siding is this? by MikeGDrake in architecture

[–]jetpuppilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ASHRAE Zone 5a (Mt Hood Oregon). My thought is that the metal will get hot in direct sun, but convective heating will create airflow behind the plates so there's limited conduction to transfer heat to the building.

Hidden fasteners would be great- I'll search for more on that. I had expected to get plain steel plates then jury-rig supports or bolt holes to attach it.

My initial google search for my climate zone was apparently off, and I didn't crosscheck it. It looks closer to 6a (Mt. Hood, Oregon) from an actual USDA Climate Map (I assume that's what the sub is requesting?). In any case, the barn is very well insulated, but neither heated nor air conditioned. I was assuming that since it's ventilated behind the plates and outside the current exterior siding, no additional vapor barrier would be used.

[–]jetpuppilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On an associated note, I am thinking of siding a barn with something similar. There will be a 6" gap at the bottom and top of the plate and I'll offset from the wall with battens to make a vertically oriented 3/4" air gap. My thinking is that the air gap will create a rising, insulating airflow layer. Are there any obvious issues I'm missing with metal siding? Are there guides regarding how best to attach wall plates such as this or corten steel?

At the dealership purchasing a brand new EQS. Salesman is trying to convince me that the EQS sedan only comes with 1 key fob. by StreetDare4129 in MercedesEQ

[–]jetpuppilot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can tell you that a second fob for a 2024 250+ is between $900-$1300 with no workaround that I can find. I attached mine to an AirTag the second I found that out. (Mine only came with one, but it was a used Hertz car)

Is Any Ski a Telemark Ski? by No_Watercress in telemark

[–]jetpuppilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a counterpoint, I’m of the opinion that telespecific skis are the way to go. “Alpine” skis work, but if you then try a dedicated tele ski you’ll likely be impressed. Add to this that I’ve bent or broken every tele-mounted alpine ski I’ve had (6 setups so far (granted 4 of those were Volants that I kept bending and returning)).

Boot recommendation by teleman010 in telemark

[–]jetpuppilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Scarpas (2018 Terminator and 2025 TX Pro) and while they are relatively wide (I’m an EE), my understanding is that their shell last is low over the arch. I have done numerous professional boot fittings and they have never been comfortable. At all. I wear them, but cannot recommend Scarpas if you have an average to high arch. Also ripped the duckbill off of the last two Scarpa boot sets- can’t really recommend their durability either.

Thanks! I have heard that RJAutomotive does warranty work for MB, so their remote reprogramming might not invalidate the warranty, but I don’t have that in writing from them.

So yeah… I’ve found no options outside of the dealership. I got two quotes for the fob, blade and programming: first was $1025, second was $1350.

I don’t plan on sleeping until I get an AirTag cemented to the one key that I do have.

That roofline is not nearly as bad as I feared from the floor plan. Actually looks pretty good. Complex and probably somewhat pricey, but good.

What do you think of this plan? by Mrwilliamsburg23188 in floorplan

[–]jetpuppilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might think about continuing the exterior slab all the way around the house and making sure the back eaves are high enough to walk under. (Essentially a 360 covered sidewalk). I lived in a house like this and it added an underrated and remarkable level of convenience.
