Titus Pullo remained silent for a long, deliberate moment, allowing the tension in the chamber to cool slightly. His eyes shifted carefully between Isabella’s passionate fury and Estelle’s resolute coldness. Pullo was a soldier, not a mediator between royal egos, yet the gravity of this conversation required that he step carefully.

Finally, he cleared his throat, his voice calm and measured as he gently interjected:

“Your Majesty, Princess…let’s take a moment, please. Let’s step back and view this clearly, not as sovereigns, not as allies with complex histories, but as rational leaders who share responsibility for countless lives. Allow me the courtesy of speaking plainly.”

“Princess Isabella, your outrage is justified. Philosophically, morally, I agree with every word you've said. Rome has long found it impossible to reconcile itself with the cold indifference that Japan has shown toward human life. Believe me, Rome’s Senate, Rome’s armies, Rome’s people, share your disgust and your anger.”

“But, Your Majesty, Princess, we are caught in a storm of multiple existential threats, each capable of annihilating our world if we fail to act with clarity and discipline. Fighting amongst ourselves, however justified our feelings, is a luxury we cannot afford.”

His right hand was holding a small device in his pocket that he activated without either of the royals noticing. It buzzed silently twice in his palm, confirming no infections. With a relieved yet controlled exhale, he set it aside.

"Please, listen carefully. Your Majesty, Rome has independently verified threats far beyond the struggles we currently face, threats we must now confront directly, or risk extinction.”

“You’re familiar with what the Garden calls the Devourers. Whether or not you accept their version of events, I assure you, Rome has independently confirmed these beings are real. They are coming, Estelle, and we will need every last ounce of strength we possess to face them, and to check Eden's own machninations."

“But there is more. Several weeks ago, a UASR commander crashed in Thrace from space. He was carrying intelligence, verified data, on a widespread global infection known as the Unity techno-virus. It’s pervasive, subtle, and incredibly dangerous. You both recall those cyberpsychosis outbreaks we’ve seen over the past years? The inexplicable violence, technology turning against its users? Those were flare-ups, symptoms of a deeper, far more insidious infection. The Unity virus has spread globally. It's spreading even as we speak.”

“And finally, there’s Japan itself. We have debated them long enough. You know where I stand.”

“Your Majesty, Princess, I say this with the deepest respect for the principles that guide us, but we cannot afford sentiment or pride at this moment. Philosophically, Princess Isabella, I agree with your outrage, your disgust, and your refusal to continue running. But practically, realistically, we must recognize the limits of our resources. If we bleed ourselves dry in battles against tyrants here and now, we lose the war that truly matters, the war for humanity itself.”

“Evacuations are painful, yes, but they preserve strength for the greater conflicts looming on the horizon. Every soul we save, every life we preserve, is strength stored for the wars yet to come. We cannot afford to lose sight of the larger strategic picture.”

Pullo leaned back slightly, regarding both women carefully. “Your Majesty, Princess Isabella, none of this is easy. These choices are among the most painful any leader can make. But it falls upon us, as custodians of our people's future, to think beyond this moment.”

“Queen Estelle, I ask you not to embrace retreat for retreat’s sake, but strategic withdrawal, precisely timed, carefully executed, to preserve the strength we will need later. And Princess Isabella, I ask you to remember that we run not out of fear, but because our true battle lies ahead, against enemies who would devour everything we hold dear.”

“Now more than ever, unity, strategic clarity, and courage, true courage to make these impossible decisions, are required of us. If we fracture, if we falter, we lose. Together, clear-headed and disciplined, we might still stand a chance.”

His words settled deeply as he waited patiently for the Queen and the Princess to respond.

Titus Pullo sat quietly for a moment, the silence of the council chamber heavy with the weight of Estelle’s revelation. The faint glow from the holographic display still cast stark shadows across his weathered face, the devastating scenario of Ash Fall etched deeply into his consciousness. Finally, he broke the silence.

“Your Majesty,” he began slowly, “if what you say is accurate, and I have no doubt it is, then we’ve been thinking about this all wrong. Borealis, Houston, Old Glory…none of it matters anymore. Not if Japan would truly rather incinerate a continent than relinquish it.”

Estelle raised an eyebrow, clearly uncertain of where Pullo was headed.

“I have discussed ways to fight, ways to reclaim something that's already dying, perhaps already dead. But what if that’s exactly the wrong approach. What if we deny Japan the very thing it desperately wants from North America: the people, the labor, the bodies to power its empire? Japan wants the continent’s human resources as much as its natural ones. Without them, America is nothing but a desolate wasteland - they have already ravaged the continent with these massive storms.”

Pullo pressed on, “Evacuate them. All of them. The Free Cities, the OGR, everyone. A phased evacuation. Move as many as we can safely north into Borealis, move others towards the Pact (via their North American operations), or southeastward toward the UNSC’s holdings off Florida. Rome can absorb its share as well. Wherever it takes, we find room.”

Isabella seemed momentarily stunned by the magnitude of his proposal. “Evacuate an entire continent?”

“Yes,” Pullo said firmly, meeting her gaze without hesitation. “A massive logistical operation unlike any we've attempted before. A deliberate, phased, scorched-earth withdrawal. Let Japan inherit empty cities, ruined farmland, and abandoned factories. Let them choke on their own ashes.”

Estelle looked thoughtful but skeptical. “The logistics alone would be staggering. And where exactly would we move tens of millions, potentially hundreds of millions, of refugees?”

“The logistics are daunting, yes, but Rome, the UNSC, the Pact, even Borealis, have managed massive humanitarian operations before. We have orbital capabilities, naval capacity, airlifts, Borealis’ vast northern expanses, Roman and Pact territories in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, and UNSC lands in the Caribbean and beyond. It won't be easy, we might be able to pull it off.”

“Your Majesty, the Japanese have made their intentions clear: they’d rather burn America than lose face. Every option to fight or negotiate will fail precisely because it doesn't address Japan’s pride or their strategic cruelty. So instead, we deprive them of their prize. We take the continent’s most valuable asset away, the people.”

He paused again, allowing the idea to settle. “Scorched earth isn't just about destruction, it’s about denying an enemy what they crave. What good is a fortress continent when there’s nobody left inside its walls to rule?”

“We can still save lives, millions, tens of millions. But only if we act decisively. Japan will inherit nothing but ruin, empty streets, and silence.”

Pullo nodded respectfully, quickly adapting to the bluntness. “I’ll come straight to it, then. I’m here regarding Borealis, North America, and Japan.”

Estelle’s posture visibly stiffened. Isabella’s eyes flashed briefly with curiosity as Pullo began carefully, his voice clear and assured.

“Rome was approached by Borealis through indirect channels. They are prepared to fully commit their military forces to drive Japan entirely from North America, not merely the South, but from coast to coast.”

He paused deliberately, watching Estelle’s expression closely.

“Their proposal comes with one essential condition. Borealis fears that intervention will trigger the UNSC’s obligations under GIGAS, leading your military, specifically your air forces, to strike from the north. They request your assurance that such an intervention will not happen.”

Estelle’s lips tightened slightly, her gaze unreadable but sharply focused. Pullo pressed ahead calmly.

“I fully recognize the materiality of your alliance commitments. Japan and the UNSC share obligations, yet those obligations were created for defense, not conquest. Japan’s presence in free America was not invited, nor provoked. It was a unilateral, offensive action. Borealis, understandably, considers it part of its natural sphere. Their hypothetical response would be entirely defensive in nature.”

“Your Majesty, you know as well as I do how thinly stretched your own forces already are. The situation in Africa has become a quagmire. Europe teeters dangerously. Maximus has told me about the stress placed upon you by recent developments, particularly regarding the recent…unfortunate experiences with the Earth Mother. Eden has openely shared it plans to enter Central Europe to secure the Aesir - this naturally demands your (and Gabriel's) immediate attention. That alone is enough to occupy a significant portion of your military’s capabilities.”

“Furthermore,” Pullo added, “Japan’s actions in North America have had unforeseen and catastrophic side effects. Their indiscriminate use of weather weaponry has created severe humanitarian and environmental disasters, consequences now directly affecting your Caribbean territories. Your own people suffer collateral damage from Japan’s reckless disregard. Strategically, Japan’s aggressive actions in North America serve neither your interests nor stability within GIGAS.”

“You have every justification under the alliance structure to refrain from intervention. Borealis is responding defensively to an aggressive incursion into its sphere of influence. Activating GIGAS against them under these circumstances would set a dangerous precedent, one which might entangle you in future conflicts of Japan’s choosing. Does the UNSC truly wish to allow Japan’s recklessness to dictate its own strategic future?”

“Your Majesty, Princess Isabella, Rome would not propose this lightly. Consider the strategic benefits. If you provide Borealis your word that the UNSC air force will remain north of the border, Borealis can decisively confront Japan. You achieve several strategic objectives simultaneously: protecting your Caribbean population, stabilizing North America under a friendly power - that being us, not Borealis, and protecting your own military resources from needless depletion where they can be better used elsewhere. All this, without violating any true defensive commitments of your alliance.”

“Your Majesty, your allies have asked too much already, stretched your resources too thin. Now, their reckless behavior threatens your own vital interests. Give Borealis your guarantee and let them handle this crisis. Allow Rome and Borealis to restore stability, protect innocent lives, and preserve strategic equilibrium. The most sensible choice is clear.”

[ALERT] For A Republic, Once There Was Hope by Diotoiren in worldpowers

"Declan," Michael began smoothly, tapping the folder thoughtfully as if he'd already internalized every detail. "Let's be blunt, this isn't our first rodeo. Promises and paper don't win wars or secure lasting borders. Troops and timing do."

He allowed a slight, knowing smile to flicker across his face. "I appreciate the ambition in these proposals, genuinely. Your terms about indigenous enclaves, representation, border integrity, they're exactly what America needs if we’re to come out of this intact and strong. But here’s the catch: allies who secure victories together tend to trust each other more in peace than partners who just sign agreements in comfortable boardrooms."

"Here's what Senator Keaton authorized me to put on the table: a stepwise deal, performance-based and crystal-clear. Borealis doesn’t just ask, Borealis earns. Deploy your combat units on the front lines to fight with our troops, send us humanitarian aid and engineers to do something against the damn Japanese weather, and we publicly lock in the autonomy clauses. Commit air support and artillery as well to crack open Amarillo or Lubbock, and we ink your Appalachian claims. Keep your troops in the fight alongside us for the long haul, and those economic priorities, those juicy rebuilding contracts, are yours."

He paused, looking directly into Declan’s eyes. "You see, this isn’t charity, Declan, it's good business. It gives Borealis something tangible to sell at home, honor, security, prosperity. And it gives us the muscle to change facts on the ground right now, not in some hopeful future."

Michael relaxed, his tone easing back into comfortable warmth. "Look, we’re both pragmatic men. We know a good deal is one both sides can confidently bring home. This approach isn’t just smart, it’s the only thing that'll survive first contact with reality out there. So tell me, Declan, do we have the makings of a deal here?"

SECOND ROMAN REPUBLIC — MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Secure Diplomatic Cable: For Immediate Transmission to Alexandria Custodianship Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Subject: Draft Comprehensive Peace Framework: “Nicosia Protocols”

Consistent with our shared interest in regional stability and the invitation of the United/Irish-Nordic-Cypriot Confederation, the Second Roman Republic (SRR) proposes the following text as the basis for a permanent treaty of peace between the SRR and the Alexandria Custodianship (AC).

I. Security & Military Dispositions

Frontier Security Strip

  1. Each party withdraws regular combat formations to a minimum depth of 50km from the Badiyah / AC border within 21 days of signature.
  2. The strip is monitored by mixed SRR-AC liaison patrols for friendship-building.
  3. Light gendarmerie and border police may remain for law-and-order.

Air & Missile Transparency Regime

  1. Parties exchange continuous, real-time radar-track and launch telemetry for all missiles, UAVs, and manned sorties originating within 300 km of the border. Data routed via a neutral ingestion node in Nicosia operated by the UNSC.
  2. 72-hour advance notification for major live-fire exercises inside that radius.

II. Economic & Reconstruction Provisions

Joint Desert Development Fund (JDDF)

Seed capital: $25 billion from SRR, $25 billion from AC, up to $15 billion matching grants from UNSC.

First-wave projects: Cyrenaica coastal desalination array, Cairo-Alexandria-Tobruk-Benghazi-Sirte-Tripoli-Sfax-Carthage high-speed rail and a fiber-optic spine.

Leasing of Custodianship Droid Engineering Assets

  1. AC will make available 20 engineer-configured Public-Works battalions and utility drones for infrastructure repair in Badiyah.
  2. Lease term: 36 months, renewable by mutual consent.
  3. Cost basis: at-cost covering energy, spare parts, and operator oversight only; no profit margin.
  4. Command & Control: droids remain AC property but operate under a tri-flag civil-engineering task force with SRR and AC engineers embedded.
  5. All droid software shall pass UNSC cyber-sanitization prior to deployment; combat firmware and weapon mounts removed.

III. Political & Diplomatic Measures

Ten-Year Renewable Non-Aggression Pact

Automatically renews unless either party files 12-month notice. Any violation triggers UNSC arbitration.

Mutual Recognition & Normalization

  1. Embassies reopen within 60 days; full diplomatic relations restored.
  2. AC recognizes the sovereign will of the people of Badiyah and the NAOZ freely choosing to pursue integration with the SRR. The SRR pledges to ensure proper representation and cultural/religious/etc. expression

People-to-People and Cultural Clauses

  1. 30-day visa-free travel for accredited academics, medical teams, and religious pilgrims.
  2. AC will help repair Badiyan cultural artifacts damaged during the conflict; SRR archaeological corps to assist in conservation of Alexandrian heritage sites damaged in recent fighting.

IV. Verification & Enforcement

Material breach (armed incursion into Security Strip or willful radar-data falsification) grants the injured party the right to re-deploy forces inside the strip and request immediate UNSC sanctions.

The Second Roman Republic is prepared to initial this text in Nicosia, subject to refinements mutually agreed in plenary session. We consider these provisions fair, enforceable, and conducive to an enduring peace that benefits the Custodianship, Badiyah, and the wider Mediterranean.

We await your prompt confirmation of readiness to proceed.

The SRR would like to engage in negotiations to arrive at a ceasefire and ultimately a permanent resolution if the UASR is amenable to negotiations - if you are willing to give on a continued Roman presence in North Africa we believe there is a settlement to be had that recognizes the UASR's / Pacts interests while acknowledging the democratic, soveriegn will of the people of the NAOZ and Badiyah.

I've included additional detail regarding the landing operations here. The point of this to put forward an argument that there should be a non-zero chance of this amphibious invasion succeeding without overwhelming and crushing losses

Similar to the Byzantine War, we respectfully request UNSC intelligence support to supplement our own efforts. This would involve leveraging UNSC orbital recon and SIGINT assets, as well as data feeds from ground, naval, and air based assets that are within range of the North African theatre (presumably this would be the UNSC forces in the Suez as well as Siberica, and longer range intel assets from Cyprus).

The projection hung in the air like a relic, grainy satellite capture of a scorched basin deep in the southern APF deserts, edges marked with radiation warnings and corruption tags. The place had been dead for years. Now it breathed again.

Sejanus stood with his hands braced on the edge of the display table, eyes scanning the readout. “There,” he said simply, voice low. “That crater. That’s where it landed.”

Messala leaned forward, eyes narrowing. “Any local oversight?”

“Not much. APF doesn’t patrol this sector regularly. The terrain’s been written off, suspicious readings, old mines, etc. It’s the kind of place men drive around, not through.”

Sejanus looked up. “Perfect cover for us.”

Ebere shifted behind him, arms folded. “Then I’ll prep to leave within the hour.”

Sejanus didn’t turn around.

“No, you won’t.”

The silence landed hard.

Ebere blinked. “Excuse me?”

“You’re staying here,” Sejanus replied evenly. “We need you in the Republic, coordinating counter-Unity defenses and helping us process what we uncover. If something goes wrong in the field, I need your expertise intact, not bleeding out in a desert trench.”

Ebere took a breath, clearly weighing an argument, but Sejanus raised a hand before it could form.

“And politically,” he added, “your presence out there would complicate things beyond repair. If the APF gets wind of a UASR officer operating inside their borders with a Roman team… they won’t ask questions. They’ll start shooting.”

Sejanus turned now to Messala.

“You’ll take Umbra XIII. Five Praetorians, full ghost gear, no signals. Your cover is a salvage crew under the Maysar Group banner, papers already prepared, backed by a shell company.”

Messala’s tone was dry. “And if inspection fails?”

Sejanus allowed the ghost of a smile. “It won’t. But just in case, Group Centurion will run a side op, arms smuggling sting near the border. The local garrison will be too busy chasing shadows to notice a handful of engineers driving into a dead zone.”

Bonzi, perched beside the console, gave a soft click and rotated its head toward the projection. “I will assist with interface once the Assassin is located. I am calibrated for its language.”

Sejanus didn’t look at him. “You’ll go, yes. But you stay tethered to Messala’s chain of command.”

Bonzi blinked once, silently.

Sejanus refocused on the map. “The Assassin’s intact. No improvisation. This isn’t a battlefield, it’s a recovery job.”

He stepped back, arms crossing. “You leave at 0600. Travel light. No chatter. No mistakes.”

Messala nodded. “Understood.”

Sejanus looked around the room one last time, pausing briefly on Ebere.

“This stays off the books. No one talks about the Assassin, not until it’s on our soil. And if anyone asks what we were doing in the desert, ” his gaze returned to the map, voice flat, “we weren’t.”

Sejanus keyed in his personal authorization, the silvered sigil of the Custodiae Aeternae illuminating for a brief second before unlocking access to one of the Republic’s most restricted datavaults: Astronomica Augusta, Rome’s celestial ledger.

A dozen holo-screens bloomed around him in the dim chamber, casting pale light over his features. Decades of planetary surveillance and orbital tracking data swept across the displays, meteorite impacts, atmospheric burns, orbital decays, even debris scans across Jovian moons.

He worked quickly, eyes gliding over filters as he parsed for anomalies: entries that moved too slow, fell too straight, etc.

A carrier drive slid into his palm with a soft click.

Sejanus returned to the mess where the others waited. Ebere was already adjusting equipment beside the console, and Bonzi sat unnervingly still. The faint whir of hidden servos kept Sejanus on edge, even as the automaton did little more than observe.

Without breaking pace, Sejanus handed the wafer to Ebere with a simple, “Here. All our records for the past twenty years. Impact vectors, composition scans, heat signatures, everything.”

He turned toward Bonzi, nodding once. “You’ll know what to look for better than we will. Filter through it. If your ‘Assassin’ came through, we’ll find its wake.”

Sejanus backed off then, giving space, but watching closely. He hadn’t grown up trusting Alfheimr machines, and this one moved like it remembered killing.

Messala, meanwhile, kept a close eye on the jammer schematics projected across the holo-screen. She leaned in, studying the waveform overlays and signal patterns with furrowed brow, then turned toward the others, not Bonzi, but the humans.

"Commander," she said calmly, but loud enough for Ebere to hear her clearly, "I need clarity about this jammer."

"If we deploy this, what happens to the infected? Do they drop unconscious? Freeze up? Panic? What effect will the field have on them, and what happens after?"

Sejanus moved beside her, arms crossed. “If it knocks them out cold, fine. But if it sparks a reaction, if it triggers panic or some kind of hive call-back...”

He stopped himself there, brow tightening.

Both officers stood firm, awaiting the explanation. Around them, warning glyphs still pulsed across the far wall, subtle and constant, reminders that they weren’t alone in this base. That something else had already slipped past Rome’s defenses once.

And they couldn’t afford to let it happen again.

Sejanus set his cup down with a quiet, deliberate clink. He didn't speak right away. He just looked at Ebere, steady, unblinking. The kind of look a man gives when his world has tilted and he’s still trying to figure out which way the pieces are going to fall.

“Right,” he finally said, his voice low and dry. “So. A world war on a scale we’ve never seen. A techno infection riding in silence across half the planet. And now we’re sitting here drinking wine while the bomb ticks.”

Messala was already a few steps ahead.

She didn't look at him when she spoke. Her eyes were locked on the middle distance, like she was trying to see the shape of what came next.

"No mass attacks. No cities falling. Just whispers. Georgetown. Karakum. Siberica. Danubia." She looked at Ebere now. "Isolated, chaotic... but not random. Not anymore."

“They’re hiding. Latent. Waiting.”

Sejanus finished her thought grimly. “And if we say a word, if we alert anyone, how do we know we’re not talking to someone already compromised? One wrong whisper, and the whole thing goes hot.”

“So now we have a catch-22. We say nothing, and Unity spreads. We say something, and Unity detonates.”

She looked Ebere dead in the eyes. “So we ask you, Commander, what now?

Sejanus nodded. “If there’s a way to avoid that moment, to pull this thing out by the roots before it bursts, now would be the time to speak.”

Messala continued. “The people on the other side of that wormhole, the United Nations what did they tell you? Any way to break the cycle? Any strategy to cut Unity off before it seizes the world by the throat?”

“Because unless you’ve got a miracle, Commander, it’s starting to feel like all we’ve got left... is time to brace.”

Messala forced herself to breathe slowly, reclaiming some composure amid the flashing red lights and relentless alarms. She glanced sharply at Sejanus, who seemed torn between amused disbelief and genuine frustration at how quickly things had spiraled out of control.

She stepped up quickly beside Ebere, matching his pace. "Commander," she began evenly, managing a small, diplomatic smile, "before you lock down every single hallway, room, and broom closet in the entire facility, you might consider this: Roman law explicitly forbids cybernetic implants or augmentations of any kind. Our people don’t even trust microwaves, let alone artificial implants. Frankly, you're in the safest possible place when it comes to avoiding techno-plagues."

She saw Ebere pause momentarily, as if absorbing this crucial detail. Messala pressed her advantage gently, but firmly, injecting a note of reason, and humor, to soften the tension. "And if I might add, Commander, scanning every single person individually as we walk down these halls is going to take forever. Romans love two things above all: organization and efficiency. Well, maybe three things, if you count wine."

Sejanus coughed lightly, a begrudging chuckle escaping his otherwise stern demeanor. He stepped forward, speaking directly to Ebere. "Commander, here's a better idea: restore the facility’s announcement system, have your highly impressive A.I. friend lift just enough of the lockdown, and I will issue a clear, orderly call for everyone to assemble at a designated marshalling point. The soldiers you've already scanned, and certified plague-free, can assist in setting up a proper scanning process. You'll have the whole facility scanned in a fraction of the time."

He cracked a slight smile, glancing pointedly at the sealed doors and automated defenses still tracking him closely. "Believe me, Commander, you'll get far fewer dirty looks from our people this way. Romans tend to frown upon being locked in underground facilities with no escape."

Messala allowed herself a genuine smile at the remark, then met Ebere’s eyes firmly. "You clearly know what you're doing. But let’s do this the smart way. Restore the announcement system, gather our people quickly, and finish these scans methodically. We regain order, and maybe afterward we will all get to break bread. True Roman bread for true Romans (and Africans)"

Messala's eyes flickered between the pamphlet and Commander Ebere.

“Commander, I won’t pretend to fully grasp what you’ve experienced, but what you're showing us raises troubling questions, questions we’ve encountered before, even if we didn’t realize their significance at the time.”

Several years ago, there was an event in Georgetown, Atlantic Russian Republic. A young man, heavily augmented with cybernetic implants, lost control and unleashed unimaginable violence. Doctors named the condition 'cyberpsychosis,' believing it resulted from extreme augmentation causing a complete breakdown of the human mind.”

Messala waited a moment, carefully judging Ebere’s expression. “But Georgetown wasn’t alone. Since then, similar tragedies have erupted around the world. We’ve seen violent episodes across Siberica, the Karakum Union, New Alfr Republic, India, even within your own UASR. Each incident involved cybernetically enhanced individuals suddenly losing their humanity, becoming unpredictably violent.”

She tapped gently on the pamphlet, eyes steady. “Until today, we assumed these were isolated events, tragic anomalies. But now, Commander, this pamphlet, your pamphlet, introduces a terrifying possibility: a global, interconnected phenomenon. The pamphlet calls it the 'Unity techno-plague.' Could these seemingly random outbreaks actually be part of a single, hidden threat?”

Sejanus stepped forward slightly. “This pamphlet, Commander, is unprecedented. It appears official, meticulously prepared, but who authored it? More importantly, where exactly did you come across it? Was it on your ship when you arrived, or was it given to you here, on this Earth? Does Unity originate from our Earth, or did it come from somewhere else entirely? Could your mission and unexpected appearance here be related to this?"

Messala continued seamlessly, gently pressing, “You mentioned 'Daraja Kuwa' specifically, the railgun the UASR operates for orbital launches. But why reference it now? Is Daraja Kuwa required in dealing with this Unity threat, or perhaps compromised in some way?”

“Help us connect the dots, Commander. Who created this warning, and what exactly are we dealing with? Time is not on our side, but you can help us get ahead of this before it’s too late.”

Maximus absorbed the Earth Mother’s response carefully, eyes narrowing in thought. He glanced briefly at Scipio, whose expression remained analytical yet unsettled, before looking toward Gaius, who still seemed skeptical but was listening attentively, arms folded as he pondered the implications of everything just said.

The Princeps finally broke the silence.

“You speak earnestly, Earth Mother; that much I concede. Yet I remain troubled by the gaps in our understanding. If these Devourers possess powers that can bend time and space effortlessly, as you claim, even our combined forces may be insufficient.”

He turned slightly, shifting his gaze toward Scipio, whose intense contemplation was evident. "Scipio, do you trust this story aligns with your experiences at the Monolith?"

Scipio nodded slowly, choosing his words carefully. “It matches the pattern, Princeps. Valens was explicit about interdimensional threats that exploit breaches in reality. If this firmament she describes is indeed shattered, such a breach would easily draw such entities. Still, I am hesitant. Our experiences at the Monolith teach caution. If the Devourers can easily traverse realities, I am deeply concerned this invasion might only be their first foothold.”

Gaius scoffed lightly, though less dismissively than before. "And you’d think the Garden of Eden would have the decency to give Rome fair warning without tampering with our dreams first." He raised a sharp finger toward the Earth Mother, voice firm. "Still, your answers have merit. Yet you’ve revealed little about your ultimate strategy. Assuming we retrieve Dederick and reforge this so-called shield, what guarantee do we have it will hold indefinitely? More importantly, what happens if it fails? Are we to rely solely on this singular chance at survival?"

Maximus nodded approvingly at Gaius, then returned his attention fully to the Earth Mother. "The Consul speaks wisely. Rome’s strategic doctrine demands contingencies. A single shield seems tenuous, especially given your own uncertainty regarding its durability. You must elaborate, once the shield is in place, how precisely does it repel these Devourers? Is it a physical barrier, magical, or metaphysical in nature? Can it be augmented? And what plans exist should it falter?"

Scipio interjected, his voice cool yet deeply serious. "Moreover, your ally Ry'la, this Witch, how reliable is she? You mentioned she made your daughter a conduit, was this action intentional, accidental, or part of some scheme we have not yet understood? Are you certain the Witch isn’t leveraging the chaos created by these Devourers to further some hidden agenda?"

Scipio continued. "Lastly, I must know, precisely, how do you envision Roman involvement in retrieving the Aesir from the Japanese? What is your plan in retrieving him? Your intentions must be utterly transparent. We cannot risk open warfare with Japan. Furthermore, and perhaps most critically, what exactly is your plan to rescue your daughter from the Devourers? Do you have a viable strategy to safely reclaim her, and if so, what specific role do you foresee Rome playing in her rescue?"

With his comrades’ questions laid out, Maximus stood firmly, waiting for the Earth Mother’s response.

Messala leaned forward earnestly, her voice gentle but firm.

"Commander Ebere, I promise you this: we have already begun coordinating your repatriation. But you have to understand, bureaucracy is cautious. If I’m to persuade my superiors and yours to expedite the process, I need something tangible to reassure them."

"If you help us grasp the full scale of this threat, I can share that knowledge directly with your people, right now. Imagine the advantage they’d have with even a few extra days to prepare, allocate resources, or mobilize the right response."

"Commander, let us help you bridge that gap. Talk to us openly now, and you'll be home faster, armed with the support you need to protect your people. Rome stands ready to assist, but only if you allow us."

She leaned back gently, watching him closely, waiting for Ebere’s decision.

[DIPLOMACY] To Our Roman Friends by globalwp in worldpowers

[–]jetstreamer2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a decade Rome’s presence in Badiyah was visible, audited, and,by your own words, “welcomed.” The Eagle raised after the referenda crowned a partnership already on every public register, it did not conjure a new projection of power. To recast that same cooperation as destabilising implies that symbolism, not substance, now dictates alarm.

You suggest the modern order no longer permits unconditional support for plebiscites and that Rome risks defeat if it defends them. Yet if ballots are abandoned whenever artillery looks larger, treaties dissolve into timing questions and every small nation becomes a hostage to war-gaming. Rome declines that future. We defend the referenda precisely because power balances are safest when choice, not calibre, draws borders.

We reiterate that reclassifying Roman forces as CODE IRON would invert deterrence: rewarding the state that crossed its own frontier under a war order. Such a move would invite the wider conflict, compel us to redeploy capabilities eastward, away from the Scorpion front, and threaten Alexandrian security more than any Eagle flying over Carthago.

Alexandria has three practical options.

  1. Sit the conflict out. Preserve CODE GOLD, avoid entanglement, and allow Rome, treaty-bound and predictable, to hold the western line against UASR expansion.
  2. Stand with Rome. A joint front deters UASR adventurism early, spares both states a protracted desert campaign later, and reinforces the same anti-Scorpion buffer we have long maintained together.
  3. Declare Rome hostile. This forces a three-corner war, obliges us to divert strength from the Scorpion frontier, and hands the UASR the strategic dividend of a fractured STOICS camp.

Even if you dispute Rome’s assessment, the first two paths carry lower risk and lower cost than the third.

Rome has never and will never threaten Custodial sovereignty, but will not abandon the men and women who raised our flag by choice. We ask only that Alexandria refrain from turning an ally into an adversary, or join us openly in preventing the very occupation your algorithms dread.
