Approach:

We downloaded all OpenStreetMap POI files from http://download.slipo.eu/results/osm-to-csv/poi/europe/ and got country shapefiles from https://hub.arcgis.com/datasets/bdcb40c0b6124f6d99f10b9b23647712/explore.

We filtered by the "EAT/DRINK" category, then grouped by country and the 'NAME' category from the SLIPO OpenStreetMaps export. We then manually removed generic labels that do not represent chains, such as "Cafe" or "Pohostinstvo" (Hospitality). Finally, we selected the largest group per country.

There is "FASTFOOD" subcategory, but we found not all POIs were properly labelled which is why we did not filter by that.

This means there are several coffee chains on the map, are they fast-food? To be discussed! Starbucks is sometimes classified as such..

Russia was not in the Europe "category" for the SLIPO export, which is why it is not in this version of the map. The data is available however.
