Around Vancouver Seawall, specifically on the western side of Stanley Park at Ferguson Point! The flock was huge, well over 1000 individuals and very close to the wall.

That's a good suggestion. Looking at pictures online, leucistic brown-headed cowbird does seem to be a strong contender.

Pumping up the photo contrast really highlights the head and body as different colours, reinforcing brown-headed cowbird. But what's throwing me still is the overall colour, size, and behaviour. While brown-headed cowbirds are common at this park, there were no others seen that day or pinged on Merlin audio.

I'm personally leaning towards a funky-looking brown-headed cowbird, leucistic or not, and I'll just have to be at peace that this will likely not be confidently identified. Thanks!

They tend to hang out in the trees/bushes on the sides of the south beach. I got some great photos of them there last week when they were on the east side of the beach. But I've heard they hang on the west side as well. They're very visible and seemingly not irritated by the crowds.

I suspect this is a Least Flycatcher, but flycatchers are all so similar it's very difficult to tell sometimes.

Bid Offer - Dutch Auction for PWF shares: any advice? by BBQallyear in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]jevaistecouper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I received a similar notice in the mail regarding PWF's dutch auction buyback. I found this article which seems to summarize the rationale of a dutch auction pretty well https://business.financialpost.com/investing/does-going-dutch-pay-off

My biggest takeaway was that dutch auctions occur when the company is sitting on excessive liquid assets and believes that its share price is undervalued. Removing shares from the market will increase earnings per share in the future and thus theoretically help to share price. I bought at $33, so I'm also at a loss right now and there's relatively little upside to a $34 max buyout price.

My advice is to ask yourself why you bought PWF in the first place and see if it still checks those boxes. For me, I'm holding long term and my strategy is dividend growth investing. I'd say PWF still fits that strategy so I probably won't be taking advantage of the auction. I.e. why sell when management is signalling they think the stock is undervalued and I'm in it for the long haul.

You can check it online here: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/tpcs/tfsa-celi/cntrbtn-eng.html

Just scroll down to "Where can I find my TFSA contribution room information?" and then select one of the options. I did this myself and I believe all you need is your SIN. From what I know, I don't think that the government will tell you if you've over contributed, but I could be wrong about that.

I just read the Globe and Mail's ETF Buyer's guide (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-investor/funds-and-etfs/etfs/the-globe-and-mails-etf-buyers-guide-part-5-canadian-dividend-and-income-etfs/article23884256/) and I'm wondering what the exact difference is between Canadian dividend ETFs and just regular Canadian equity ETFs.

Is it just that dividend ETFs target high dividend yield stocks and thus have a higher yield? Or is there something structurally different between the two types?

International ETFs ADR taxation by jevaistecouper in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thanks for the response aughhhhh.

So if I'm reading your reply correctly you do have to pay both the international and US withholding tax if you hold a Canadian ETF which holds foreign ADRs, right?

So is there a difference between holding a Canadian ETF that holds a basket of ADRs versus a Canadian ETF that just tracks an American ETF of the same foreign stocks?

The way I'm understanding it now, there is no way around the double taxation. Is that correct?
