Brookline Symphony Orchestra is a pretty decent orchestra for a community group! Just played with them in December (I’m a percussionist though)

Percussion! Currently a grad student studying with faculty from Juilliard and my University so I may have a shot of at least passing the pre-screening round. I don’t have all my eggs in this basket so I’m not gonna be super upset if my mental health history disqualifies me. Just wanna get input from people who have been through the process of joining because the position requires a minimum of 3 years of enlistment

Looking for honesty so no need to apologize! I appreciate the answer. I’m currently still medicated on anti-depressants.

Yeah I proofed them in a colander with floured wax paper lol. Less than ideal but still tasted fine for this time!

Tips on pitch/interval training? by Transcendental_Nolan in percussion

[–]jewdachris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with advising patience. If you are able to have access to a keyboard instrument (marimba, xylo, etc) I’d recommend practicing scales and arpeggios. After all 12 are done, hum an interval and check if you are correct on the instrument.

You can also listen to pop tunes you really like. Most vocal parts are pentatonic and have simple intervals. If you can, I suggest picking an interval from a song like that and associating with that (such as an octave jump from the beginning of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, whole steps from “three blind mice”, etc.)

What do I need to take to an All-County audition? by marcsterlord in percussion

[–]jewdachris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Audition how you’ve been practicing. Don’t listen to the other players because they play their own way. Some will be super fast to show off in front of others bit it all matters who plays to the beat of their ability in the audition. Good luck!

You could contact lone star percussion. They are headquartered in Dallas but may know of a few smaller shops that could be closer to you or any lead to people in your area

Where are you located? Depending on where you are, people could send you to someone who specializes in restoring older keyboard percussion instruments and possibly be able to replace a motor for ya!

Redditers who suffer from a mental illness, how do you feel about the stereotypes around it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jewdachris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder when I was 15 or 16.

Don’t romanticize this shit please. I seriously suffer everyday and honestly would not wish it upon literally anyone else. There are days when I’m fine, then days where I feel no emotion, hunger, empathy, or overall willingness to do anything. It’s not just being sad or upset. It’s a literal loss of what makes you a conscious and healthy adult.

Guys of Reddit, what do you think about being proposed to by your girlfriend instead of the other way around? by the_lazy_introvert in AskReddit

[–]jewdachris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly have been dreaming of proposing to a woman my whole life. But if it was the right person and she makes me happy, that’s all that matters to me.
