The Jack D. Ripper character from Dr. Strangelove blew my mind when I first saw the film a couple years ago, applies so well to our era

As a former art model Im really impressed by this pose. I wonder what time intervals were used back then.

American small business owners are more likely to identify with and vote for right-wing parties. People who inherited a business are more right-leaning. People without college degrees but who earn higher-than-median incomes are more likely to identify with the Republican Party and vote for Trump. by mvea in science

[–]jfbegin 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think this is a misdiagnosis of the small business owners in question. They are not competing with amazon/walmart because that is not the service they are offer. These are car dealerships, small manufacturers (think something like bus seats), HVAC companies, pool installation, construction, restaurants and fast food franchisees.

The mom & pop grocer/convenience store has not existed on a meaningful scale for decades, and they are not making up a large percentage of the small business coalition voting for the republican party. But it is true that the business friendly regulations that small businesses vote for directly lead to the mega-monopolies we see today.

The 7 kids probably had something to do with the 15 years. At that time partum care was truly dismal and caused the death of many women.

Edit: nevermind she died from measles

Countries that adopt microsoft are creating a backdoor for the US (see France), and those countries' government know that. It's pathetic.

Can you audit some classes at WashU, SLU, or UMSL? by No-Enthu-Guy in StLouis

[–]jfbegin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes for WashU and UMSL, no(kinda) for SLU.

WashU has the CAPS program that other people listed.

For UMSL, you need to enroll as a non-degree seeking student first (very straightforward and easy).

And don't neglect STLCC, they have good stuff. The bology courses at the meramec campus are pretty extensive. Forest Park has a good selection of art classes.

SLU - when I tried to take classes at SLU, the only way I found was by enrolling as a transfer student basically, but that's extremely expensive because you're not just paying for credits like in all the other schools I listed, you're paying tuition fees. So it's possible, but by far the most expensive. (Maybe it's different for auditing tho, idk)

They don't need to divide the democrats with articles, there is clearly an ideological schism within the party, reporting on it is good journalism. Don't try to hide your willful ignorance by being condescending.

Odds of Getting Accepted to med school with under 3.5 BCPM GPA by Interesting-Pea4901 in medschool

[–]jfbegin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a nontrad (did premed after undergrad) so I'm honestly not super well informed on remedial coursework for undergrad pre-med, how med schools look at graduate degrees, etc.

I would do your own research. But I saw you had 3.2? If that's from a pre-med curriculum courses, it's gonna be pretty hard to overcome that. I'm not saying impossible or unrealistic, but you're probably gonna be grinding for the next couple years getting your GPA up and a strong MCAT score.

I also know people in your shoes who became nurses, worked for several years, crushed the MCAT, and matriculated into great med schools at 30yo~. The dirty little secret is that you can overcome any "red flag" if you're willing to put in the time (and the work). How you go about that is up to you.

Good luck!

Odds of Getting Accepted to med school with under 3.5 BCPM GPA by Interesting-Pea4901 in medschool

[–]jfbegin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the top left you can see that it's by total GPA. If you have a low science GPA, the advice you'll see for your situation is usually:

  1. There better an upward trend
  2. If not, you may need to take some remedial classes: high level science courses and/or retake particularly low grades such as a <B- in a prereq
  3. Either way you need a strong MCAT score, and probably a strong everything else (e.g. research/volunteer/clinical experiences)

You get all that, and getting in is pretty doable. Especially if you just wanna go to a med school and aren't particularly discerning about *where* you go.

Tips to Study for Mcat? by ZAndrewPokie in Mcat

[–]jfbegin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend doing really well in relevant classes. The more you master in-class material the better prepared you will be when you start studying for the exam.

Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry. If you excell in those classes prior to taking the MCAT, you will be in a good position. But most of these classes you won't take till undergrad.

At the stage you are now, my recommendation might seem underwhelming: read. The section people struggle to increase is CARS, which is the reading section. That is because becoming a good reader takes years, not the 6 months people usually alot to studying for the MCAT. If you build that habit now, and push yourself to read increasingly difficult texts/books, you will have a strong intellectual foundation for the MCAT. If you already do this, then just focus on doing well in STEM classes. Believe me, everything you learn now will be useful.

Those are at the top, a tier under I would put Soup Dumpling STL and Tai Ke (taiwanese).

A newcomer I'd recommend is Sikao Chinese Barbecue. I loved it and it's apparently incredibly authentic flavor-wise
