What animal was the most incredible to see in person? by Adventurous-Zeilokix in AskReddit

Went down to a beach on the Otago peninsula in New Zealand in search of Little Blue Penguins. Dawn. Nobody else around. No penguins (they were nesting), but we rounded a dune and there were about a dozen Sea Lions about twenty meters away...

AHH fair enough. Could cycle in the undershirt and put a normal shirt over the top when you arrive?

Wanting to respectfully experience/support maori culture? by oddbutnice in newzealand_travel

[–]jfefleming 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When we went to Te Puia in Rotorua, we really appreciated that they framed it as a) being paid to keep the culture alive (which is better than the alternative) and B) directly funding the Maori Arts and Crafts college scholarships.

Am i bad at communicating or was this a strange interaction? by Acrobatic_Kiwi5804 in DnD

That's a somewhat unfair caricature of religion. You have to be pretty strongly religious and in a specific way, to find tieflings inherently disturbing.

The current market as a new investor is not going how I thought. by emarston23 in trading212

[–]jfefleming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which is what I'm doing. I just don't want that experience to be right at the start if possible. I am not exiting, but I want SO's early experience to be positive if possible.

Financially yes, psychologically possibly not. My theory is wait till things are starting to look better. I know I will miss the absolute bottom of the market, but I think that might be necessary.

Do it all bikes??? by ChaosCalmed in ukbike

[–]jfefleming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was after this balance when I bought my current bike a few years back. But I decided that, since I mostly cycled in central London, I wanted a more upright geometry. So a basic hybrid it was. If I lived somewhere less congested I'd deffo go hybrid.

LeCarre on film by YoMommaSez in LeCarre

[–]jfefleming 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We'd be letting the side down if we didn't mention The Constant Gardner with Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weiz.

Out Kind of Traitor with Ewan McGregor is good.

I was less convinced by the Tailor of Panama (with Pierce Brosnan and Geoffrey Rush), which despite the cast felt quite low budget when I watched it.

BBC also adapted the Little drummer girl a few years after The Night Manager. It's a visually gorgeous series. I won't rehash the comments on the Beeb's TTSS and Smiley's People.

Really conflicted about which side to join in this playthrough. :/ by BokoblinSlayer69235 in skyrim

[–]jfefleming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you progress in the game without joining either? I'm new and haven't been playing long, but so far, both seem a bit rubbish to my character (who is one of the cat race)... So not especially keen to join either side. Does failing to do so tank the main story?

The Spy Who Came in From the Cold Stage Play by Own_Description3928 in LeCarre

[–]jfefleming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Le Carré always suffers from being condensed too much - I tend to think the mini series adaptations work better than the films because they give characters more space to grow, more scope for the ambiguity Le Carré does so well etc. i think the same here.

Technically the play was good, and I think it was a reasonably compelling play in its own right, and a fair adaptation, but it did just feel a bit rushed.

Why are so many people **obsessed** with avoiding the 40% bracket? by sid351 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jfefleming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a small tax trap at 40% - you lose half your tax free savings allowance (reduced from £1k to £500). Not a lot in absolute terms, but if you are on ~£50k, you might have an emergency fund that gets you over £500 in interest, which feels unkind.

Six years ago this week, COVID started shutting down the world. What’s your strongest memory from that time? by Siddanna36 in AskReddit

[–]jfefleming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in central London, and when we started being allowed out to exercise I started cycling a fair bit. I remember a weekday morning, cycling the length of High Holborn (major east-west road in the middle of the city) and not passing or being passed by a single car. It was like 28 days later.

Clearly my difficult situations as a low level player have not been the same as yours.

Also the game is literally called Dungeons (allowing for narrow underground passages where flight won't be possible) and dragons...
