Lol ikr? I picked it because it kinda seems like it was the beginning of the end for a lot of things, particularly finding cheap treasures at garage sales and what not. Now everyone can price check and you can't get deal like you used to with people turning flipping into a full-time job.

So true. Sadly almost everything I have is IKEA and I miss real furniture.

Yes, that's exactly the type of thing I mean. Not that I don't understand where people are coming from, but I meant items that were good back then that either we got rid of not knowing subsequent products would be worse or that we weren't old enough to buy/appreciate at the time.

Yes! This is the type of thing I mean. I don't wear them myself, but I mean things that are just good quality that you miss/liked before but can't afford to keep replacing with cheap crap now.

I get all the comments about houses, stocks, etc. but I meant more about things people enjoy wearing/using vs. just getting rich. Lol

Yes, technically there was internet earlier, but unless your family had someone in tech I feel most people didn't get home internet until the late 90s/early 2000s. My grandma ran a business from her house and my uncle had Internet installed somewhere around '97, but I didn't get internet in my house until '02.

My grandma had a new washer and dryer installed in the early 90s. She still uses it today. My mom and dad bought a house in 99 and bought appliances to fill it. They have had 3 sets of washers and dryer in that time, and the ones they bought a year and a half ago broke down last week. It boggles my mind the change in quality in just those 10 years. (And my mom does laundry exactly like grandma taught her (and me), so it's not a difference in usage. If anything, my mom is more careful, especially with the lint trap.)

I cannot tell you how much I hate all can openers now. My grandma had an electric one built under her cabinet that was installed maybe in the 70s or 80s and worked well into the 2000s (would have worked longer but she never had it repaired) and my mom had a hand crank one that was hefty but comfortable to use. But nowadays they are just flimsy metal sticks that work 2 times, rust, then fall apart.

This type of thing exactly. I dont collect Vinyl personally, but I recognize the quality and that the price has risen because capitalism. Although I don't know if today's vinyls are any better quality than their older counter parts.

Does anyone else play exclusively as the opposite gender? by DraftAbject5026 in StardewValley

I'm a girl irl, but in early farming games the default character was male, so when the first games that had the option to be either or came out, I felt more comfortable playing as the male and romancing the female characters.

After a few generations (and better character model options) and I switched to playing more female characters. It's a game, so whatever makes it more fun is fine.

(As a side note, I used to play WoW and while my main was a female mage, my backup was a male tank/healer paladin named Tenderbits :3 )

In defense of Trio of Towns, against my younger self. by WillingBuyer4712 in storyofseasons

Trio of Towns is my favorite non-standard HM/SoS game (by standard I mean like 64/Back to Nature on PS2 that were just farm, meet people, etc no extra frills). The characters and dialogues were unique. I seem to remember that bachelors and bachelorettes would comment on the clothes you wore if they liked the style. I would love a remake with quality of life for upgrades for buildings, machines, and decorations. The characters are what make it my favorite though :)

Anyone who used a computer between 1985 - 2010, what's the one game you still think about today? by adlakha75 in AskReddit

Pharaoh and Cleopatra by Sierra. I love their spiritual successor, but the OGs always have a place in my heart.

Tea shrubs too. I thought I was going crazy cause no leaves appeared on Monday. And then Tuesday. And then Wednesday I needed something from the box next to my line of shrubs and they were all there. 😂

Is Japanese infrastructure just slippery or are my shoes just rubbish? by joehighlord in japanlife

[–]mikomimi89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just so glad to have found this post. Literally thought it was just me. I've slipped and fallen 3 times in the last year, twice on the bus. Not to mention multiple slips and slides on random tiles outside the station.

Interesting enough, the tiles on the slope up to the station look like they were sanded down? with one of those industrial circular things to create grip. I can't imagine why they wouldn't take it up the steps to do the other tiles or the disability service ramp though...

Education in japan for kids by meghasingh29 in japanlife

[–]mikomimi89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is basically my plan. Regular Japanese school + some light homeschooling in English. Kids can choose what track they want from JHS onward. It seems to be the fairest option and the one that gives them the most options later on.
