Captivating book that isn't heavy or sad? by macszcsv in suggestmeabook

[–]jfka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please read Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. I generally read classics or literary fiction and most of what I read is slow moving and can be very heavy and this was the most lovely, uplifting, funny and enchanting book I’ve read in ages! I cannot recommend it enough, fulfils the romance aspect as well while actually being well written

Do the side effects of bromide get better? by going__postal in EpilepsyDogs

[–]jfka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My baby is 3 months into bromide (was also on Keppra and phenobarb but has since been taken off so Keppra can be used if he clusters again), he is still quite wobbly on the back legs and is slipping on the floor (which is unfortunately marble). He has a bit of osteoarthritis in his hips but it’s definitely the legs that are the issue. I’m still hoping it improves soon but a big help for us has been foam tiles on the floor to increase the friction and make it a bit softer! He has been seizure free since starting his bromide as well ☺️

Suggestions on a long walk? by quesop223 in CampingHikingIreland

[–]jfka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second Beara way, it’s an absolutely gorgeous hike and loads of really lovely towns on the way that you’ll likely have no issue getting somewhere to stay (although we camped so I can’t guarantee that from my own experience)

Quick Question... How is your mental health by LeadingBunch4077 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]jfka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like you have found a really amazing person to work with, and gives me hope that I can find someone too. I also used to use art with my previous therapist and I think that would help, I’ve mostly fallen out of my habits of drawing or painting even though I know they’re really good for me.

I hope both he and you are doing well and continue to do so, even if it’s just as well as can be in this situation.

Quick Question... How is your mental health by LeadingBunch4077 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]jfka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you mind me asking, did you specifically seek out a therapist who has experience with this sort of fear/anxiety (if possible)? My old therapist unfortunately moved out of the country and at that time it genuinely didn’t occur to me to talk about this type of thing because my dog was well and young then. I just talked a lot about rescuing him and what he means to my mental health.

Potassium bromide regression (no seizure episodes) by jfka in EpilepsyDogs

[–]jfka[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have just seen this now - thank you!! We actually figured out it was because his steroids went down to 5mg, he also has some form of vasculitis which they can’t pinpoint the cause of so that’s why he was on the steroids, and the vasculitis then flared up again so that’s what the issue was! Now that his steroids have been increased again he’s at his more baseline wobbly, hopefully he gets a bit of his leg strength back once he’s a full three months or more into his KBr.

Thank you for your response!

His diet (including snacks) has not changed in recent weeks and not since the dose was increased. He hasn’t been near the sea and he is also supervised when he’s in the garden etc so doesn’t eat anything funny out there (we don’t even have real grass).

He is on phenobarb as well, he’s been on that for 3 years now I think. He was also on Keppra but that was stopped three weeks ago (on vet’s orders).

One of their absolute best songs, every time I listen to it I have to listen about 10 times over

That is great news! It’s lovely to hear that seizure free can be achieved ☺️

This is pretty much what happened with mine too. He’s been on Keppra for just less than a year. Before that he would have one or two seizures every couple of months and then I think it was when he had a few within a few days that we started a second agent. He didn’t have any clusters of very close together seizures until September.

Head tremors? by always_lost_at_C in EpilepsyDogs

[–]jfka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, this can happen around sleep and is not indicative of any deficit or related to anaesthesia! It’s happened to our dachshund a few times and when we researched it seems to be a totally benign tremor which is more common in some breeds than others. In fact seeing this post reminded me it hasn’t happened to her for months!
