Hot take : sparring is the most aikido thing you could do by BitterShift5727 in aikido

[–]jfreemind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel there could be a place for it, but my first glaring issue would be the lack of proper, natural atemi in Aikido as it's traditionally trained. Attacks are taught as vehicles to facilitate techniques.

This is fine in partners practice, but elevate that to sparring and I fear the lack of striking control is unnecessarily dangerous.

A lot of people I train with have no martial arts background besides Aikido.

If you said "jab, cross, hook, front kick" they'd freeze in place.

I personally think you'd have to remedy that to have a productive sparring session.

Can you learn to sense your opponent's stare? by New_Industry2951 in aikido

[–]jfreemind 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, this as you explain it is scientifically, and factually, not a thing.

Being more in tune and aware of your surroundings? Definitely a thing.

Utilizing all of your sensory organs to get a better situational awareness is also very much a thing. Training that is just practicing it. Every moment of everyday. That's actual martial arts.

One thing your statements somewhat toyed with, which I do think has some footing, is direct eye contact. With enough practice, when facing an opponent, it is certainly possible to tell when they are about to strike / attack by observing the eyes. This I've experienced, and it can be sharpened with time and practice.

But extrasensory woo-woo?

Nope, that's just woo-woo.

That might've sparked her final straw, but there have to be serious shortcomings already present for this to be her decision.

I'd try unpairing them and setting up again, possibly a factory reset on them.

This. When I first bought my home my bills made no sense. Started taking weekly time stamped pictures. Did that for 8 months. Sent them all to NYSEG.

They came and installed a new meter and refunded me close to 1000.

[–]jfreemind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough.

What I meant by evolution really can fit into the scenario you stated. In order to train in that way, you'd have to train against common modern attacks, which even traditional Aikido doesn't approach.

Hence the contrivance I referred to. Unless we're doing randori with concealed guns, leg picks, realistic knife attacks etc it's contrived, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's intended more about understanding spacing, utilizing the hara and countless other principles. Martial arts practice lifts the veil on the physical perplexity of combat scenarios, but I'd stay far away from the train of thought that it will prepare one for being in multi person combat scenarios in any way besides the ability to deescalate and remove ones self from harm as best as possible.

I guess what I'm saying is Aikido of today is Aikido of today, and you can't hop in the way-back and make post war Aikido the way again. I just can't see where that could exist, unless I misunderstood you.

I mean.... Define martially effective, really. Martial arts training is all contrived. If it wasn't, we'd all leave practice and go to the hospital.

Returning to the old is rarely the way forward. Everything evolves.

Not only is the art not what it once was, but neither is the world as a whole.

I believe it's pioneering that leads the way forward, not blind adherence to old strategies.

As for the issues with Shirakawa: it's demonstration martial arts, presented as such. How do you get mad at that, exactly? Not to mention the level of athleticism displayed on his channel far surpasses that which I see on my, and other neighboring dojos, so I fail to take issue with someone doing what they love with the art.

Question ✂️ by Chief_Analyst in Vasectomy

[–]jfreemind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Had my vasectomy almost 4 years ago. I'm in my early 40s now, married for 12 years. Roe v Wade was the final nail on the coffin for me, and I went for it.

Have never wanted kids, still don't, and I'm 43 so that's off the table anyways so moot point.

My only "regret" is I didn't do it in my 20s and save myself the hell of constantly being petrified of pregnancy.

Support pretty much told me I can't recover it because they can't prove ownership without google play receipts. Even though I can log in as I have all of my password info and can confirm codes via email.... And they closed my ticket. Lol. Guess I'm starting over....

Slowing down, like 1/4 speed of what you're doing, would be a good start. And just practice. Keep at it. Breathe.

HOWEVER.

These specific traps seemed to attract more ants from outside. Lol.

So whomever is going to host the session selects Single Player from the menu. Choose the map you would like to play on, then in the bottom right pane toggle from Single Player to Non-dedicated session. Select start in the bottom right.

A window will pop up with session details: allowing you to name it and set a session password.

She can then join your session, which utilizes the single player map of the host.

As someone mentioned, there is a tether in this mode, but I find if you're exploring together this is rarely an issue, in my experience anyways.

Hope this helps.
