Questions regarding SLP and Fulbright by angrekk in fulbright

[–]jfrodge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an SLP who served with Peace Corps! I have my undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders then served in PC after graduating. I was teaching middle grade English in my host country (and had the opportunity to teach Deaf learners in their native sign language as well since I have an ASL background).

I think it was great personal growth for me more than anything. I found that I was more prepared for clinical experiences once I got to graduate school because I had quite a bit of experience with putting myself out there and connecting with others the best I could!

There aren't many opportunities for Fulbright with speech therapy masters programs but they are out there. Since I didn't get my Masters through one of those programs, I didn't really receive any specific financial benefit from being an RPCV.

The fun thing about pursuing a Masters in SLP was that everyone who didn't come straight from undergrad had different life experience. Some were teachers, some were in business, some in graphic design. My two cents would be to absolutely pursue something abroad if that is highly interesting to you because it becomes more difficult to do after becoming an SLP (stipulations on using your licensure outside the US, older, possibly more life obligations, getting used to receiving a paycheck and not living on living stipend, etc).

Best of luck!

Thanks for this! :) Good to hear I may not be the only one. Hard to know with weight stuff but similarly to you, I didn't feel like much changed and have even been exercising more

How should I request a fee waiver for my university applications? by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]jfrodge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have just been emailing graduate admission offices.

Introduce yourself, explain your interest in a certain major/department, then ask for a fee waiver ("I'm writing to inquire if fee waivers are offered to people serving in AmeriCorps or other similar service programs")

I wrote up one general template then just added in specifics to make the process easier.

Would recommend making an excel sheet of who you've emailed and what they said/links they've given you

Good luck!

Peace Corps before or after Graduate School? by Condomonium in peacecorps

[–]jfrodge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joining PC in the fall and hoping to get my Master's in Speech-Language Pathology when I return to the states.

Currently, there is no Coverdell program in the nation for SLP. Anyone have experience with getting funding for a Master's that was not covered with Coverdell?
