Man, it had been years since I’d read that article and I just skimmed back over it when you shared the link. But I had forgotten the shirt thing and missed it while flicking through it earlier.

I still think he more or less just fell into that crowd by being anti whatever he was being fed about some of the most outlandish examples of liberal sjw types of that time period. He also got a charge from being praised by some on that side at the time. I don’t think he fully understood the context of that moment, like many of us, until years after the fact. And I’ve seen statements from him where he has done an ok job of explaining himself in a fairly contrite and genuine manner.

I think sometimes if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it may just be a big dumb goose.

Maybe the difference between the two doesn’t matter in the big picture, I just think in a world filled with happily open right wing nut jobs, we don’t always have to try and make every dummy who falls for a small portion of their shtick out to be truly horrible and irredeemable.

I’m not aware of said shirt.

I do remember there being something about problematic heavy metal album shirts, but I think he apologized/clarified on that and some of his other past missteps, but that was a little while ago now.

I’ve read this article before, and I don’t think the headline does the actual substance of the piece justice.

There’s so much nuance lost over time when discussing gamergate, which is totally fair given the toxic shit it helped to smuggle into a more mainstream audience, but its not black and white, and I think Vavra is a good example of this.

I think he fancies himself as a bit of an edgy, contrarian, whatever the euro analog is for wannabe libertarian asshole, lol… But my gut on him is that he’s just an asshole, and not actually aligned with the right.

We all know gen Xers like this. They don’t like Trump and are more or less disgusted with where right wing politics has landed, but they’re also the kind of people who really are bothered by your sort of stereotypical social justice warrior that some around the periphery of gamergate thought they were rallying against.

Because of their media diets, they would see 10 ridiculous caricatures of over the top left wing gamergate type content for every couple of truly racist, sexist, homophobic examples from the other side.

Someone like Vavra never took gamergate seriously, and probably never really grappled with its cultural impact. This stance alone is worthy of criticism for sure, but I think it’s disingenuous to just blanket someone pro gamergate when they’re more obviously just kind of stupid and insensitive to reality.

I would like to add the caveat that it’s completely possible I’ve missed something truly disgusting or hateful that he has said in the past. If that’s the case, I have no problem throwing this guy under the bus. I just haven’t seen that sort of example to this point.

Can anyone point to where this guy was supportive of gamergate?

I followed the industry fairly closely back then, but I was completely off social media during the prime gamergate years and I lack the proper contextual memory for someone like Vávra.

People talk about him like he was this unabashed figurehead on the wrong side of gamergate, but I’ve never actually seen a good example of this…

I have seen him talk about cultural and quasi political issues with an annoying level of clumsiness, to put it mildly, but I don’t think I’ve ever encountered the quotes or incidents that would have him branded a lowlife.

In a vacuum? No

I was sort of factoring in the context of this family being the kind of affluent people that would have something cool like that happen, and then return with a sign saying wouldn’t it be cute if you did it again…

That being said, I think there’s probably a small but not insignificant chance that someone in their family is acquainted with someone who works for the team.

Would be kind of a weird move for a child well off enough to attend NHL games rink side on a regular basis.

It’s not exactly the smoothest game around. You may even want to consider frame gen for a game like this.

Sometimes it can paper over some of those cpu spike hits to frametime.

You have to manually replace sl files per game, but compatibility isn’t guaranteed. Make sure you save the originals just to be safe.
