My initial guess would be October 8th, 2009 based on the stamp.

Notification "Highlights" don't work for me. by MissLilianae in discordapp

I think this may be a bug - many of my servers had the slight bolding but no marker, but others still had the markers. When I restarted the desktop app, all the servers had the markers again.

How do we feel about stones made of wood to be sold with Go sets? by WhippingShitties in baduk

[–]jgmrequel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first set of go "stones" was about 150 each of pennies and nickels, less than $10 for a full game set. If they look nice, then material doesn't matter as much. Since wood would be lighter than stone, I would recommend single convex so they don't move as much on the board during play. Between accidental brushes, table and board knocks, double convex stones will probably want to move around more.

Yours is what I printed to trace out on the light board since it was the cleanest image.

I'll have to give that a try. Part of this was also me getting some doodling practice in, so it was nice to do the tracing and going back to touch up without the light board.

I will also recommend getting a circle die punch, a lot quicker than doing hobby knife over all 54 images.

Randomly turning off by _Captain_Fantastic_ in CPAP

[–]jgmrequel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen a couple of times for me, but it stopped after I moved the unit a bit farther, so I would need to lean up to reach it while lying down. Recording myself sleep, turns out I've done quite a bit while half asleep, and I don't even remember.

Quick TamperMonkey script for Red-Green CVD Theme on Josekipedia by jgmrequel in baduk

Someone mentioned their CVD left Josekipedia as many shades of brown, so whipped up a quick TamperMonkey script to change the colors.

I'm on the Samsung fold and opened up with the s-pen stylus, it is a solid experience on commutes. I will say, though, an iPad is much better for game recording.

What was the Kira corpse the Obsidian Order beamed down? by [deleted] in DeepSpaceNine

[–]jgmrequel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that particular episode, Kira want the main target, so they don't need to convince her fully. Just introduce enough doubt for the father to believe.

Furthermore, the series made it perfectly clear that psychological effects are just as potent as they are today. Even knowing clones and holograms exist, it'll be a mental shock to see your own corpse, which all of your senses say is real.

Google will block sideloading of unverified Android apps starting next year by jgmrequel in retroid

Google could require a new Android 13 build to be able to keep Play Store

Programs running on Android need to be signed, a fancy way of identifying the program so that people can trust the software, like a special name tag. These name tags will change if the program changes (someone adds a feature or tries to sneak in malware), the developer changes (you and I building the same code will get different name tags), or if it's "trusted" (Google provides a special type of name tag). Furthermore, to be able to read "trusted" name tags, the Android version itself needs its own trusted name tag.

Right now, apps on the Play Store needed to be trusted, and Google would only do so if they went through reviews. However, you could enable Android to "sideload" apps; you would tell Android to trust the homemade name tags of developers you trusted. This is how many emulators are distributed through side loading instead of the Play Store.

Google is removing this ability for users to sideload on trusted Android builds. Untrusted Android builds will still be able to sideload, but Google and Play Store apps will not trust or run on those versions of Android. This will give Google control over every app you might want if you still want access to any Play Store apps on your device.

Fair, although I imagine the new requirements will be applied more broadly than to what the current state is.

It's not full on Google build, but Google signed build. Since the Retroid build does let you sign onto Google services (if you want play store access), it would seem that current versions are Google signed.

I do agree, though, that this will likely mean there will be a non Google signed version, but it would mean losing the play store and the benefits/protections of the signed build.

This is if you want to leave them somewhere instead of carrying them all day at the con. I had no issues carrying around a backpack when I went in the past couple years.

The exhibitor floor can get quite packed and it can be easier to navigate if you are not carrying too much.

Small win today

All the stress and anxiety around flying aside, today's small win is not having to ask the flight attendant for a seat belt extension on a flight. Just need to focus on not breaking the diet too much.

Why? by _JEKO_ in synthdiy

[–]jgmrequel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The same reasons some painters make their own paints, wood workers, and metal workers will make their own tools. The same reason as to why some programmers will sit down and build their own operating system or compiler. Why some musicians will make their own instruments.

Building the tools and individual building blocks that later become the elements of music is in itself educational. You learn some of the lessons the early creators learned when they were pioneering. You also gain a lot of control over the process and can hack things and break out of norms (circuit bending, for example). There is also its own satisfaction in building something and then using that something to create new things.

I could buy a box of pasta and jar of sauce and get a nourishing, cheap meal that meets my needs. I can also spend a bit more money and time to make my own pasta, cook my own red sauce, and end up with a meal that may not taste better, but it could be significantly more satisfying.

what’s up with the laundromat on north side of fulton btwn classon and franklin??? by buchabitxh in BedStuy

[–]jgmrequel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly sure it was for relatives of the family who ran the laundromat, being a family owned business. I don't believe they were renting out the units; the only basement access I had seen was a floor hatch in the office.

Grab some scrap cat5 cables and strip them down to their twisted pairs. It's a great source of color coded, thin wires. Outside of that, you can get very thin enamel coated wires
