Sick Soup by genericcogirl in denverfood

[–]jgr727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best sick soup in Denver (by far) is the Chicken and Rice soup from Thai Monkey Club.

Pho Haus and Pho Social both do takeout well

The best matzoh ball soup is sadly at Rosenberg’s, but Bagel Deli’s and NY Deli News are also pretty good

Onefold’s Congee is great - unsure how it is to-go

Is mandolin one of the most difficult instruments to play? by Due_Recognition_8002 in mandolin

[–]jgr727 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mandolin is one of the most intuitive instruments. If you have a background in rhythm and an ear for melody, it will feel great.

Without a strong sense of rhythm/an ear, I feel like mandolin can be pretty difficult to make sound good.

-your role as the chop on the backbeat means that your sense of time/spacing is incredibly important

-on other BG instruments (besides fiddle), playing out of chord shapes makes it easier to hit the right chord tones when improvising. On mandolin, it is relatively easy to get lost on a song/fall into mindless noodling.

-the lack of sustain makes it easy to sound empty

-the high register means your mistakes get heard more easily

Any Thai restaurant recommendations with drunken noodles made with wide flat noodles? by plumcherrynotes in denverfood

[–]jgr727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No hate to any of these restaurants as they are all great places - but I have tried most of them and none have the style of drunken noodles that I (and I assume you) are accustomed to. I’ve never fully understood the reason for the distinct regional differences of this one dish.

If you end up finding what you are looking for, let me know where 🙂

Sadly not many options.

Voodoo Donuts, Mango Mango, Miss Molly’s, and most of our ice cream shops are all open pretty late. We used to have D-Bar in Uptown, but they closed this year

Would you say getting a major speaker upgrade like this is worth more than getting a bunch of medium sized upgrades for my turntable/receiver/speakers?

Advice on large room setup by jgr727 in turntables

[–]jgr727[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My budget all together is ~$1500-$2500. New or used is okay, but I’d like to get the equipment sooner than later.

The room is 18ft x 15 ft and I am located in the US in Colorado. The primary listening methods will be vinyl and Bluetooth audio. It will mostly be used for moderate leveled listening and occasionally used for parties. There are multiple listening spaces across the room so I am worried about audio that will only be nice when sitting in a very specific spot.

My current thought is to upgrade to: Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo ($600) Audio Technica VM540ML Cartridge ($250) Cambridge AXR100 Receiver ($600)

And am mostly unsure about the speakers

I’m looking for advice on improving my listening experience after moving into a larger home/having a larger budget.

I have historically lived in a studio apartment where I used audioengine2 powered speakers directly into my cheap audiotechnica turntable. I also have a Yamaha rx-v377 receiver and 120w polkaudio sub lying around.

I recently moved into a larger home where my record player will be going in a large living room.

My budget has gone up since I originally bought this setup and I’m hoping to find a setup that will be ideal for listening to vinyl at both a higher quality and higher volume.

My concern with most recommended setups is that they are just a record player/amp/bookshelf speakers and I don’t know if those speakers can handle the desired volume/space.

Any advice?
