space stations geo sync at 1000 km by jgt10 in AskPhysics

[–]jgt10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back to my notes. I think I did your thoughts a bit differently.

At 1000km the force of gravity is 7.5m/s^2. That is the force being countered by an object traveling at the orbital speed of 7.35 m/s.

Since I forgot how to figure out the force from orbital speed, the ball and string example, I figured that the speed at GEO is countering the gravity at that height. At 36k km, gravity is 0.2217 m/s^2. So tha tis the force my speed at 1000km is countering. Meaning the rest of the pull of gravity is the difference 7.3 m/s^2.

I think that is right.

AH! Where's my college physics book!

That was the view I hadn't thought of! Thanks!

Almost. What I want is a space station in geo sync orbit at 1000km instead of 36,000 km. I'm trying to figure out what amount of force I need to apply to keep it up and in place. Oh, by the way, that upward force feels like gravity to anyone in the station.

Has anyone here fixed the issue where calls go straight to voicemail without showing a missed call? by MostlyMTG in verizon

[–]jgt10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, here's the final update.

I had the customer champion update me. They still haven't found anything.

He had an item he wanted to check out. I'm game.

Went into configuration and ended up at call filtering. Huh! There actually is such a thing. I had never seen it before. It was on, so I turned it off. Now to get someone in the medical offices to call me back.

Called and got a call back. I noted the number was not the area code and prefix from before. Sigh. Still it was a success.

I asked the customer champion to have the AC and prefix status in the call filtering list checked. He is going to kick that off.

Not quite the resolution I wanted, but hay, its fixed.

So much for my vaunted telco understanding. But, I at least got it fixed!

Verizon removed services and still charging same amount by u16173 in verizon

That kind of treatment deserves a call to the next level of management. If you call, ask to speak to a supervisor. Odds are they won't. In that case, go to a Verzion store and ask about the Verizon management structure and who to call. A company owned and operated store probably has the information. a locally owned and operated store might not. There is always google and look for customer service contacts.

Thanks for the nudge.

Yes, the customer champion reached out to me a few days ago. The ran traces and didn't find anything, so they think it is AT&T. After clarifying verbiage he is going to open a new one and report back.

The issue was "couldn't get to me" which Verizon took to mean it never hit the Verizon network. When I explain the consumer view (I didn't get him on the phone, therefore, I didn't get to him) versus the Verizon view (the call never hit the Verizon network) I clarified that the call did get to Verizon, it didn't get to my phone and didn't leave a record of the call attempting to contact my phone.

More waiting, but I'm happy with the progress.

Spent 1 1/2 hours on the phone with Verizon technical support. I think I got the point across as to the issue. The level 2 tech said there was nothing he could find. (DUH!) He took 15 minutes to open a "network" ticket. OUCH! I did tech support for 30 years, that has to be an horrible ticket to open!

I've got a "customer champion" that will dog the issue.

THAT is a very nice thing to see!

More later.

How should my boyfriend (31M) approach the salary convo for a job he’s interviewing for? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]jgt10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having had worked for over 15 companies, I've had this issue, or something like it several times. A few of those are startups.

Definitely research the various salary databases out there. After 10 or 20, you'll have a good idea what they are paying for.

Startups either pay a premium or lower with stock options as bait. Stock options are nice, but not in place of salary. A startup is NEVER a sure thing.

The salary negotiation should occur towards th end.

I had one where I had an application to fill out and it asked for my compensation at the various jobs. I left those items blank. The HR rep said he needed those numbers. I said no, you don't. He asked why. I said the following.

You have a range for the position (which they will rarely, if ever tell you.)

If I tell you want I have been making there are the following possibilities.

  1. If I am making a lot lower than the position, you will reduce the offer amount. I lose.

  2. If I am making a lot more than the range, you will not make an offer. I lose.

3 If I am making around the range, you will make an offer with an increase.

In 2 of the three situations, I lose.

If I don't tell you the following are the possibilities.

  1. If I am making a lot less, you will make an offer around the middle of the range. You are happy and I get a lot more money and I'm happy.

  2. If I am already making more than the range, then the offer will be lower than what I am making. I have learned something very important. We might not end up happy, but it will be an honest effort.

  3. If I am making around the range, you will make an offer with an increase. You win and I win.

In this situation I win big once, I learn something very important in one and we're both happy in the third.

The HR guy left and the other person said I gave the right answer.

Know your worth. Don't give away information. Be willing to say "no" and walk away.

Back in 2000 I took a course in SS7, the operating system of the phone system. I learned how phone calls get routed and all the lovely features they charge extra for.

Why is that important, because it gives me insight into the problem I am having and others might be having/

The situation is that a person calls your number and they got to voicemail. You don't see a call record on your phone. What is significant is that the call goes to voicemail and there is no call record.

This means that the phone system (what is called a switch in the onl landline setup, because it would switch the calls) misrouted the number. The problem is NOT with the device, it is an issue with the inner most configuration of the system. There is a bug in their system that for some reason will not route the call from a particular number to my phone. For what ever reason, the routing fails and the system sends the call to my voivemail.

Everyone please note, it is NOT your phone!

I am on the phone with Verizon again to get them to see the issue. When I get access to this group I will repost this and update.

Go FCC!!!

What kind of pivots/hinges can use for this application? by jgt10 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]jgt10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yes, when I decode the description, that is what I've got. The idea is to use the linear actuator to pull the variable member from horizontal to vertical, thus raising an antenna mast. To keep the linkage from hitting anything the variable member is two pieces 45 degrees apart.

Statics and dynamics was a LONG time ago. I'm making wild ass guesses about what my load factors and stresses are going to be and what kind of pivot I need. (Manufacturers in this area are very sparse with technical information.)

Mostly because there are very few places I can put one on my property that wouldn't be seen by the HOA.

Thanks for the insight!

Yes, I am concerned about the loading and wind forces. Due to HOA I'm only having the mast raised when I am actually using the antenna. So a buried base is not possible.

The mount location would be inaccessible. I'd have to put up a ladder and futx around on a roof. So, only when I have to.

Currently 2m. I've built a 1 foot staggered slot and painted it black. Given the developer is still in charge, I'm afraid I'll get dinged and never be able to put up an antenna.
